Right now I am right around a bogey golfer, mainly because of my chipping. I have tried so many different things, and its just messing with my head. I need to find one set of techniques and stick to them. Lately I have been doing all of my bump and run chips with a 52 and the ball back in my stance, keeping the ball a little lower and checking up. Sometimes it works, but its not very consistent as sometimes it runs more than others. Right now I carry PW, 52, 56, 60 (Vokey Weges) So here are my questions....

1. What club should I be using for simple bump and runs with lots of green to work with?

2. What club should I use for tougher chips with not much green to work with?

3. On 20-30 yard chips from in the fairway should I keep it low or lob it up there with the 60?

4. My irons are the Burner 2.0s and the PW is lofted at 45 degrees so i have a big gap. I was considering 50, 55, 60 or maybe even something like a 51-52, 56-57, 62-64 set up. I honestly have no idea and I need your guys help!!

Thanks, Ty

I use a 56 degree for EVERYTHING inside 80 yards... I also carry a 60 for different conditions. I suggest the Hinge and Hold with the same club inside 80 yards... Best of Luck Man.

  1. Assuming you mean a few feet off the green, I use my PW. You'll likely get multiple answers here.
  2. Generally, the less green you have to work with, the more loft you should put under the ball (i.e., 60*).
  3. Without specifying how much fairway and green, I would use my 54* here by default. This really depends on what you're comfortable with. Also consider the lie in this situation. If I have a real tight lie, I'll go with my 60*, which has the least amount of bounce.
  4. Considering that the Burners are lofted strongly to begin with, 50-55-60 looks like the simplest and most logical option since you'd only have to bend your 52 and 56.

What club you use for a bump and run depends upon how long the shot is.  A longer chip requires a longer club.  I like to use anything ranging from a 7-iron though a gap wedge.  I stay away from the SW and LW for chipping.  The loft on those clubs is so extreme that its not hard to have the clubhead slide right under the ball and have the ball only go about 10 feet.

Unless you need to fly the ball over something such as a bunker, a low, running shot is always much safer than a higher shot.  With the higer shots, you have to be very precise in how far you fly the ball and how much spin you get, which can be very difficult.

Id suggest you go with something like a 50, 54 and 58.  That way you will have pretty even spacing between your wedges.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
