So I dropped my 'frankestein' swing recently. It was working well enough, pretty accurate, but I didnt like the distance.

I changed my swing and its working out fantastic so far, so its more just the typical golf swing and I can get a LOT more distance....had my first 270 yard drive just a couple days ago.

So anyway, with the old swing it was pretty much that I could only swing 'through the ball'.  Any deviation from that ended up with a horrible shot...so I just did how I had to and it worked to a great degree....minus the distance, obviously.

But with this new swing, that is just a typical swing that most golfers probably use, Im noticing that I can do something now that I couldnt do before. It almost feels like 'cracking a whip' AT the ball instead of only being able to do the round house swing 'through' the ball.

When I do this now it seems like no matter what the lie it picks the ball up and gets it into the air really easy.

I cant describe it other than saying that I look at the ball then purposefully try to 'snap' the clubhead AT the ball and it seems to work pretty much every time.

The question is 'Is this normal' and does everyone already do it and if so what is the correct terminology for it?

Sorry, I am still really new to the game. Lots of details yet to learn :)

Gotta go to the instructional section and post a swing video. Its really hard for the folks here to say anything otherwise...

Actually I think its a normal thing.

I saw a youtube video where a guy was trying to show how to get the ball out of a situation where the ground behind the ball is too high to get the club through, so he did this 'late release' thing that more snapped down on the ball so it didnt hit the higher bit of dirt behind the ball. I think thats pretty much what Im doing is a late release. It was just new to me because I was doing a full 'roundhouse' swing (more like a driver swing) in every situation before and was causing me to get a number of fat shots when my ball was in a lie like that.

I do like this swing a lot better. Its not hugely different from before but Im getting my legs and hips into the swing now and have a hell of a lot more control as far as hitting the ball in a bad lie.
