When our golf league leaves for our late winter Florida golf outing, most of the guys fly; but two of us drive the van with the sixteen golf bags.  I just helped load the van, and in the process, did a little survey of the gear.

Now honestly, I know most of our guys aren’t the type of club ho s  that we meet on the internet golf forums and message boards.  Nevertheless, while loading the van, I literally saw stuff from the 1970s.   Hogan Directors.  Lynx Predators.  Spalding Executives.  I was somewhat disappointed that I couldn’t find any Browning 440s!   A set of Titleist DCI 962s seemed like state of the art.  I’m absolutely sure that my three-year-old set of Miura MC-102s were the newest irons in the van.

We did have some Callaway and TaylorMades in there, but I’m still talking X-12s and Burner LCGs.  But it reminded me of the days when Callaway and TaylorMade were unheard of.  MacGregor, Spalding, and Wilson--- then giants in the general sporting goods arena-- were the big three, while H&B; Citation, Hogan, Ram, First Flight, PGA, Dunlop, and similar brands all had a significant piece of the pie.   Who knew it was such a jungle out there?

Taylormade RocketBallz.....13° tour spoon;  Ping G15.....17° fairway wood;  Callaway RAZR X Blk.....24° fairway wood;

Epon AF-901....19° driving iron;  Wishon 870Ti....5-8 irons (1° weak), 9-iron (2° weak); Nakashima SuperSpin.....52, 58, 64° wedges;

Lovett Tour Standard.....sand iron; Louisville HB.....putter.

You're talking a road-trip golf vacation with a bunch of your buddies, and the best you have to talk about is their old, rusty sticks?

I'm pretty sure the OP was just making an observation. I have noticed that the more time I spend on here the more I notice older equipment and how "out of place" it looks. Only goes to show how skewed ones perspective can get if one only hangs with club ho's!

Thanks Aging Boomer for posting this. It confirms what I'm seeing on the courses I play.

    • Fantastic selection! And very little driving between them. Fingers crossed the weather is good to you.
    • Day 20: 2026.01.22 Hit about twenty balls at the range. Quietly pleased with how the changes are bedding in, surprsingly consistent ball flight. Hoping to film over the weekend to capture new movement.
    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
