Unfortunately, the courses I usually play only seem to offer senior and junior tournaments. granted, I have not made much of an effort to search out other options. There are a few bigger ones that I have considered, but usually time is my major hurdle to clear. I have said the past few years that I want to enter the Michigan Net Amateur, but it seems to fall at bad times for me.

I love the idea of playing in a tournament, but I am worried that if i do take the plunge and sign up, my schedule will prohibit me from putting in the type of practice I need to not completely embarass myself.

I do have one more unlikely concern. I am a 17. I have the potential to play like a 24, but I also have the occasional round where I play like a 10. I would hate to think that if I did have one of those really good rounds at the right time that people would think I was a cheater. I would also be a little nervous about making a rules violation. I am pretty solid on the basics and some special instances, but when I took the Golf Digest rules quiz on line I only did fair.

We all make those mistakes. I saw our defending club champion last year hit a shank dead right into a ravine. I was 3 under in the club championship after 13 holes and forgot how to play golf. I ended up shooting 77. I chili dipped, shanked, hooked, and sliced my way to a whopping 8 over in my last 5 holes.

LOL,,,NM sounds like we have had some simular experiences! In 1989 I played in 4 18 hole stroke play events and in the first one I teed off in the back of the field and at the turn I had a 3 shot lead with 9 to play,,I lost! The second tournament, about the same thing, I had the lead at the turn and failed to win again,,,dang scoreboards! After that I was so steamed at myself that I went on a practice frenzy and in my 3rd tournament I didn't look at any scores until I was done, and won the tournament! That gave me so much confidence I went out and easily won the next tournament as well! I think there's a lot of truth in "You have to learn how to win". I think even more basic is you have to learn how to compete. So NM's right, get out there and play,,I promise after you get a few tournaments under your belt, you WILL get better!!!! As far as rules infractions go, study the rules and if you make a honest mistake and someone calls you on it, chalk it up as a learning experience. I bet you won't make the same mistake again! Knowing the rules are all just part of the game, the more you follow them the more comfortable you will be. If your in a tournament and you have to make a drop or something like that, ask a competitor if that looks right to him. Usually someone in the group will know the right thing to do. Worst thing to do is to do something your not sure of and not ask anyone. Also keep a rules book in your bag, you'll do just fine!

Get a rule book, study it, carry it in your bag, use it every round, play strictly by the rules every round and it will become second nature to you. The correct procedures are easy to learn and follow. The only time the rules become complicated is when you fail to follow correct procedures. Learn the correct way to take relief in non-penalty situations, to drop from a hazard, how to proceed if you find your ball OB, how to CORRECTLY deal with an unplayable lie, how to proceed when in doubt about the correct play (by finishing the hole with 2 balls). Learn how to do these things and you will rarely have to worry about being in breach of a rule, and that is where the big problems begin.

I play in a few charity events every year and I do a few alternate shot tournaments with my son every year, too. I've played in a couple of individual and team tournaments with handicaps and they're a lot of fun. With my handicap, a birdie or a par can turn into an eagle - which looks pretty nice on the scorecard. I used to think I wasn't good enough to play in those kind of tournaments either, but the "good" golfers on my team liked having a guy who got a few extra strokes.

I play all I can... about 12 this year including club events.
I wish we had a team format thing like the Rider Cup.
I love the stroke play tourneys, but I also like playing team stuff like low ball low total.

I played in as many individual tournaments as I could this year. Obviously some courses I just flat out DON’T LIKE so I skiped those.

This year I have played in 7 individual tournaments and have picked up a grand total of $878 in credits. I placed in 4 out of the 7. Next year I hope to bring up the number of tournaments to 10.

I use to play in a lot of tournaments, as it was a way to stay sharp and also pay for my golf equipment. Over the last several years, I really cut back on even playing golf. I started coaching my kids in different sports, and investing in their lives. I thought I would really miss it, but found that I didn't. Just recently I've started getting back into it a little more. Mainly hitting balls with my kids and helping them on their game.
I'll probably start playing in a few tournaments, but nothing like I use to.

Other than charity scrambles, my first taste was a couple years ago when my buddy joined a CC. They host bi-monthly 2-man and 4-man events. We have been pretty successful either winning script or cashola in several. We also played in two big Member-Guests, winning our mini flight this past May.

I joined my local men's club this year and have competed in 4 tourneys so far. I absolutely love it. Three of the four have been 2-man team events so I'm really looking forward to more individual tourneys.

I've had success in each one so far.
Tourney #1 - 2nd place Net - 2-man Better Ball (blind draw)
Tourney #2 - won some skins - 2-man Better Ball (also a blind draw since I didn't know anyone)
Tourney #3 - won some skins - Blue/White/Red (alternating tee positions)
Tourney #4 - 1st place Net - (tied for 3rd place gross too) 2-man team (6 holes better ball/6 alternate shot/6 scramble)

This month is a Stableford individual tourney followed by our Club Championship on Oct 27th-28th. I can hardly wait!!!

I want to participate in SCGA Team Play this January. That's another level for sure.
