I purchased a set of used Cobra Irons (with steel shafts) for my 14 year old who is learning golf. Well at the range his 4iron shaft broke in the middle. I blamed it on his inexperience, even though he has nice swing form. "PGA Superstore" was nice enough to replace it for free if I purchase another shaft and grip. Then 2 weeks later he and his school-mates were at the range and his 8iron snapped right in the middle again. The same week while with his instructor at the range his 6iron broke. Same place in the middle. The instructor showed me that the inside of the shaft had rust, even though the set looked barely used.

Now I'm going to get the whole set re-shafted, but if I knew he was going to stick with the sport I could have just bought new. I'm going to end up spending about the same. Any suggestion on good shafts?

Could you put him on a launch monitor and check his clubhead speed? This would be a good starting point.

Were the original iron shafts R flex? Unless he's really strong for his age, you might consider some TT GS-95 in R flex: some control but light enough to get some clubhead speed. Again, use launch data as a guide.

For a 14-year-old, get shafts that won't hurt his game . He'll grow and may need new clubs/shafts before HS is over; go for full custom fitting then.

Note: Two sources of internal rusting for steel shafts

  • Sensicore inserts in a humid climate
  • Playing with clubs in freezing December and repeatedly bringing them into a warm house where they sweat (could happen in Chicagoland...).

Yes they were R Flex, but I think having him checked will wait because he is still growing. 6'0 now at 14. Right now I need something (maybe stronger) but definitely not rusted. Checking out the local Golfsmith, and the new PGA Superstore and see what shafts they carry, Golfsmith can test his swing speed.
