Before taking my 12-year hiatus from golf, I used to walk the vast majority of my rounds and enjoyed playing that way. But after coming back to the game early this past summer, I quickly realized that there's no way I could make 18 holes on my feet. I have a badly damaged left leg (long story, but my femur once became dislocated and went straight down through my knee, shredding everything in there and damaging some nerves to the point that the leg and foot will never work right again). Things have worsened over time, and I've also gained a considerable amount of weight during the past decade, although I'm now in the process of taking that back off.

I started out in June with the same pair of Foot Joy athletic-type shoes I'd had when I quit. Some of the molding on the bottom had rotted over time, though, so I bought the current pair of the same style, which were nowhere near as comfortable. I began playing in the same high-top basketball shoes I wear every day (except when I'm bird-hunting or fly-fishing, when I wear lace-up boots). I basically have no left ankle, so shoes that go above that point are a must.

I did a Google search for "high-top golf shoes," which I had no idea if there even was such a thing, and the only result was the Kikkor New Heights. I was pretty jacked to find them, but I held off ordering them for a couple of months because I'd just bought quite a bit of new stuff (including the Foot Joys).

I finally pulled the trigger last week. The shoes arrived on Wednesday, and I walked 9 holes in them this morning (that's all I had time for).

They're absolutely the most comfortable pair of golf shoes I've ever worn, and the support in the ankle area is outstanding (20 years after my injury, I'm a bona fide expert in that department). I can't believe how good they felt on the course, and how good my feet felt when I got off.

They only come in two colors: the hideous "Crowd Pleaser" version shown below, and pure white. I got the white ones, but I'm going to order a pair of the other ones, too. I want people to notice them and ask me about them.

I highly recommend them for anybody who has ankle issues.

    • Day 2 (20 Jan 26) - Similar work as yesterday - started with lead hand solo drills with the 50°, followed by series of pitches and chips utilizing full setup.
    • Hey, thanks for the feedback. I do lift weights but I’m also adding yoga or Pilates for mobility and flexibility to my routine.
    • Day 18: 2026.01.20 Continuing work on arm raise during backswing. Starting to feel less weird, especially the slower I go. Looking like a busy week so might be the weekend before I can hit some balls.
    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
