I play Callaway Razr tour irons. I started out learning with Ben Hogan Apex Edge Pro...

I have been checking out used sets of the AP2's because I'd like to try a good set of forged again. My question is, has anyone Else noticed how the chrome is worn off the club face on these clubs? Some sets I've seen pics of on ebay look terrible, Nothing like that ever happened with my Ben Hogans and my son is still playing them...

what are some impressions/thoughts...

I recently just picked up a set of AP2s and love them so far. I haven't had them long enough to be able to comment on the wear but I would expect them to wear just like any other set of forged irons.

Uh oh.  This could get ugly.

AP2s tend to get some rust and wear on the face, much more so than other irons I've owned.  I just traded up from a set of original AP2s to the 712s, and the 7-PW on my old set had some pretty worn out faces.  They were basically rust colored bare metal.  I'm not sure why this happens, but I've also been looking at some preowned sets of the Titleist CBs and faces on those seem to wear the same.  It may be something about the way Titleist finishes the face.  I've owned 3 sets of Mizunos and a set of BH Grinds in the prior 20 years and never did that.

I play AP2 710 that i bought brand new 3 years back. I use them at the practice range as well. They have been heavily used and still look great. No rust, no discoloration just normal wear that you'd see with any iron. There is no way you could go wrong going with these.

    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
    • Day 150 1-10 focus on arching the wrist and getting the ball to go left. Recorded, hit foam balls.
    • Day 467 - 2026-01-10 Practiced at Pinehurst every day I was there, and before Junior Elite this morning I got fifteen minutes of backswing checks in the mirror in.
