Where does this expression come from?  What does it reference? It's something I hear a lot lately, so - just wondering.

Look at some of the golf courses on TV when the PGA is playing, they cut the fairways in strips, striped it means you hit it in one of the strips.

I'm trying to remember exactly but I think the term actually originated by hitting the middle stripe down a fairway.  I've seen the explanation before but can't find it again.
