definitely hit as many as possible. i was in the store probably 2 hours just making my decision. probably hit 500 balls, and seriously tried 10-12 different irons. The salesman was awesome, he just kept the clubs coming, and was very informative.

Driver- 580XD
3wood and 5 wood- Wal-Mart special
Irons- MX-25 4-pw
Wedges- MX-25 gw 51* 588 56*
Putter- DFX5500

If I were you, I'd check out the Cleveland CG1's. They are blades, but they are some of the more forgiving blades out there. They will definitely provide room to grow into.

Like you, I took up golf again this year. I bought Callaway Big Bertha irons and really like them.
