First post here, happy to find this board.

Briefly, I'm an old guy (63), kind of heavy (168), really a novice golfer but I practice on the range an awful lot. I've been taking some lessons and I go out on Executive Courses to practice hitting off grass. I can get around but I'm really still learning to hit my irons a decent distance (hitting fat means my 7 iron goes only about 120-130 yds, although I can hit it straight).

My question (this one, anyway) is simple. I know I could ask my instructor, which I will, but also thought feedback here would help. When I first started golf a few years ago I bought (through the lesson plan) a set of Wilson Ultras, I guess real cheap clubs with steel shafts. After taking a few additional private lessons my instructor at the time suggested I try senior/lighter clubs. He wasn't selling them but did let me try a Cobra (I think it was an S3). Very light and I hit the ball better, it really felt good. So I went out and bought a set of MacGregor MT OS irons/hybrids with graphite shafts in Amateur, or Senior, flex (A). While they weren't the Cobras I thought the answer was the graphite shafts and they were considerably cheaper. This purchase was from Golfsmith but I believe the set was made before they took over the entire MG line. Nice clubs, etc. I know it's been a long time since I started, but my question is this: I'm short, 5' 3" on a good day, and I wonder if I would benefit from taking the clubs to a fitter and letting them check them out, perhaps replacing or resizing the shafts. I know it seems I'm looking for an excuse for my relatively poor performance, maybe I am, but it's possible it might be a good idea.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm an old guy too, 62.  When I read your were heavy 168, I thought jeeze I must really be heavy at 235.  Then I see I am 9 inches taller.  At any rate, you can always benefit from getting fitted, I suspect at 5'3" you could certainly do with having shorter shafts.

Well, actually, when I was 17 I was about 270 (and I wasn't any taller). Anyway, I prefer to think of myself as "under-tall". :) I'm going to take my clubs into the local fitter and see what they say. Thanks for the post and info.

    • Its good to hear you're back to swinging, and more important that you're feeling healthy enough to do it.  As Bill says, take it gently, push just a little, I'm sure you'll be back to speed soon.
    • Yeah, all of the basic PA relief options are available for just one stroke.  However, 17.2a(2) offers an additional choice, the Player might choose to take Stroke and Distance by dropping within the PA, where he made his first attempt to play from the PA.  If he decides after dropping not to play it, he can then take any of the other options, for one additional PS, two in total.   Model Local Rule E-11 is probably being used.  The Committee can define whether the rule applies only to specific power lines or structures, could limit it to only those lines or structures in bounds.  However, then you have to determine where the ball hit the power line, which is pretty difficult, so most often they apply no matter where the ball hits the power line.  You can check the specific wording of the local rule to be sure. And the MLR as written applies no mater where the ball ends up.  So I think you did right, the player should replay the stroke with no penalty. You're right, the DQ only applies if a Stroke is made with the non-conforming club.  We'd have acted very quickly if we could have avoided that.  However, he had stickers on the driver, and we were made aware he had hit driver several times before we got the report.
    • Always summed up my feelings about the man.  I'm a life-long Reds fan (took me till 12 to discover hockey). Even though I was pretty young, I remember the excitement when Rose came back to Cincinnati from Montreal and broke Cobb's record.  My parents weren't big TV people, so the night he got that hit off Eric Show, I was messing with an ancient black and white we had in the basement. Got it to work just well enough with the rabbit ears to get a half decent picture. It was an exciting moment for sure.  Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. I suppose it is always tough on kids when their team's major stars show their warts. All those years of denial plus the occasional indication that he may have been an out-right pedophile, makes it hard for me to feel much one way or another. After all, the man is dead.
    • Probably more how I'm explaining it than interpreting it 🤣 I think I've interpreted what you have described, and explained that I'm not doing that, but incorrectly 🤷🏻‍♂️
