I just started golf with a knight tour 525 golf club set that I got at a garage sale. Im really into golf and plan on getting new clubs. The clubs im looking at our the Callaway Strata Set. Are these any good. Should I buy this set or just individual clubs. Thanks

Clubs are not a magic bullet that will fix a bad swing (not even the best clubs money can buy).

That said, it is easier to hit the ball with less effort and unwanted corrections during the swing with clubs that fit than with clubs that don't fit.

Clubs that fit have little to do with what they cost. Things like the lie angles, shaft lengths, and MOI can be altered to fit better by a fitter that knows what they are doing in most cases.

Club manufacturers are in the business of selling clubs and convincing people that they will play better with their latest designs. They keep lowering the lofts so people will think they are hitting the ball further than with their old clubs. They don't usually mention that the new 7 iron you are hitting is the same loft as your old 5 iron.

If you're a beginning player, your swing probably isn't consistent enough for loft and lie angles to have much significance in game improvement. Also, keep in mind the general rule of golf equipment prices: the more expensive a given item is, the more that item has been designed for the serious (low-handicap) player. $1,000 iron sets are not made for golfers just starting out. Practice and experience will make you a better player right now, not expensive clubs.

An out-of-the-box starter set is all you need right now. If you feel you need to buy new clubs, start with two wedges: most "complete" beginner's sets end at pitching wedge, so you do need sand and lob wedges to complete your bag. In time, you can replace the set with better clubs as you go along: start with the putter, then the driver, then the fairway woods and hybrids, and finally the irons.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Driver: '07 Burner 9.5° (stiff graphite shaft)
Woods: SasQuatch 17° 4-Wood (stiff graphite shaft)
Hybrid: 4DX Ironwood 20° (stiff graphite shaft)Irons/Wedges: Apex Edge 3-PW, GW, SW (stiff shaft); Carnoustie 60° LWPutter: Rossa AGSI+ Corzina...

I haven't played with a $100 set of clubs and there is a point where the quality becomes crap. It's not hard to find some high quality used clubs in the $400 to $600 range. If they fit they work every bit as well as new ones.

There are also brands that don't spend the sponsor dollars on the Tour players that cost much less but are just as good.

Why dont you shop a second hand site or hit up craigslist.

You can get a decent second hand driver and wood for 50 bucks each at some sites. I paid roughly 30 bucks a piece for a cobra driver s9-1f which isnt bad and a matching 3 wood.

if you dont mind mixing and matching brands, itll be easy to put something together

get these irons from ebay. i dont know what others think about them but i think they are playable for the price 3-sw macgregor battlesticks (89 bucks new) you could probably find them cheaper used.

say you pay:

driver: 50

3 wood: 50

battlesticks 3-sw: 89

youre looking at 189.00 minus shipping and a putter and a bag for a near complete beginner set - cheaper if you get those irons used - its roughly around the same price as those stratas 13 set and not the 18 which is closer to 300 i think..

However your driver and wood will be better.  having personally played with those battlesticks myself, i like em - pretty dependable.  you could also modify and get 3/4 hybrids etc... i guess it really depends on how you want to build your set and how you play.

oh and i havent played stratas so i dont know. i know id be replacing that putter asap for sure

If you want something nice, and have just a little bit more money, you can Google the name of the company you like followed by "pre-owned golf clubs" and you will find sites that have very good clubs at good prices.

My son bought some high end clubs from one of those sites this year and I couldn't tell they were even used.

    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
