I found this the other day. It was a post I posted, probably back in the 2000s (?) sometime. I don't remember which golf forum I was on at the time. Anyway the subject was about the world golf rankings, and what could be done to make them more precise. My take was they should be a calender year ranking for various reasons. I post it again now for your thoughts,

" Tiger is the best golfer in the world regardless of what math formula is applied. I am quite sure if he were playing right now he would have the most points. My point is (imo) that golf rankings should be based on a calendar year. We have a POY, We have a leading money winner of the year. We have the FedEx which is supposed to give us the best player for that year. Also, per my last post most of players end their play in the fall, and start again in January. I also believe that the players place importance on their world rankings. The way it is now, players can skip tournaments on a whim and keep their ranking. The best don't play against the best a lot of  the time. Some of the best play against poor competition at times. Some of the higher ranked players are there, do to their past play, and sometimes are playing lousy even though their ranking say otherwise. This takes away a spot from other players who are playing well during a time when their rankings say they are not. Make the rankings a calendar year, and these better players would not be skipping tournaments like they do now. Plus when the different majors come around, or the world's best events are played, you get the best players attending who are all playing well at that time. Just my opinion. Patch

Pros Break Down
There is a perceived ending of the regular pro golf season
POY is a calendar year award.
Money title is a calendar year award.
FedEx playoffs are an 8 month award based on points for the previous 8 months
Most players end their play sometime during a calendar year. Then start again after January 1st.
The current “Top 64” will be the best playing players at that tournament, at that time.
The Majors would have the best playing players’ field available at the time of play
Players in the top 64, but playing poorly (slumping) do not take spots from players playing better than them.
Better players would play against better players in more tournaments.
Creates more competitive value for ‘fans” in more tournaments.
More fans equals more sponsors, which equals more tournaments.
Less skipping of tournaments, by the better players.
TW would still be ranked #1 as long as he played a calendar year schedule.
Players would place more importance on their games, and golf rankings.
Contracts, endorsements, and perks would be  money better spent by sponsors"

In My Bag:
A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

    • It's going to be very difficult for the 2026 Masters to match the 2025 edition for storyline. I honestly don't know that anyone else in the field could match the story of Rory finally winning after so many years and the blow ups over the years, not to mention the career slam being completed. No one this year that I can think of is remotely close to that kind of story. Combine that with the attempts at blow ups last year (Double on the 1st, 13, 18 on first try) and the stunningly good shots that he hit in the final round (7, 15, 17, 18 on second try).  Full gamut: https://www.masters.com/en_US/watch/2025-04-13/17445961638226475/every_single_shot_from_rory_mcilroys_final_round.html
    • Let's kick off the 2026 Masters talk with… a look back at 2025 (coming soon):
    • Wow, so Europe named Luke for a third term. Luke Donald named 2027 European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald named 2027 European Ryder Cup Captain Who will the U.S. name? I hope not Tiger Woods.
    • I am playing Arrowhead for the first time and I am pumped.  What are some things that I need to make sure and appreciate, for those that have played it before and love it? It has been a pretty dry winter so I am expecting rough to be forgiving which is nice and it will be playing much easier than it does in the late summer (I am assuming based on other colorado courses).  What should I make sure to not miss?
