I have my old callaway x tour forged cavity back irons and i still use them. The shaft is ns pro 950 R Flex and whats funny is that i hit the 7 iron. The max is 150 yards. I tried other one srixon blade with a stiff+ kbs tour c taper shaft 7 iron at my lesson studio and i hit it 170 yards. Same swing and same speed. I dont get it. Is theres something wrong with the set i currently use?

I tried the other shaft with fujikara multi composite the one thats mixed with steel and graphite R flex and it hit 170 yards too.

I also tested the muira blade with kbs tour R flex and it also hit 170 yards.

When i tried my callaway 7 iron over and over again, it still goes 150 yards.

Thanks

First of all, please clarify...

Are you hitting the Callaway X.Forged irons (circa 2007)? Callaway made X Tour irons, and the X.Forged, but no X.Tour Forged.

For Srixon, I'm assuming the "blade" is the Z745 iron.

So, let's compare the 7 irons:

X.Forged...Loft = 35° , shaft 37" // NS Pro 950 R = 95 grams, w/ mid launch

Z745........ Loft = 32° , shaft 37" // KBS C-Taper X = 130 grams, w/low launch

...............................................// KBS Tour R = 110 grams, w/mid launch

Part of the difference in distance - 150 vs. 170 yards - will be the stronger loft of the Srixon 7i.

Also, the NS Pro is 15 to 35 grams lighter in weight than either KBS shaft. Are you also ballooning the 7i shots from the X.Forged?  If so, the heavier KBS shaft(s) may match your swing tempo better than the NS Pro.

The shaft weight remarks are speculation. Gather some launch monitor data on your shots, and you can better tell what's going on.

Also, I find it interesting that you hit the same distance with C-Taper X and the KBS Tour R.

Hello,

Yes it is Callaway x tour 2007 cavity back. and its forged too cos it says forged on the back of the hosel. The x forged is different one with the blade design. Here is my current iron set picture.

A kind of a balloon but i cant really tell when its in straight line to target but it goes like really high. No matter what i tried to swing really fast and it still goes high.

Thankks

Height in iron shots is good, unless you have too much of it. Sounds like you get better performance and more distance with the heavier - and sometimes stiffer - iron shafts you tested with the Srixon irons. Also, The Srixon 7i is +3º stronger in loft than the X Tours, which also would increase distance.

IF you check on a Mizuno shaft optimizer, I suspect you would also find that you have a rather forceful transition movement from the top. A quick transition swing often benefits from stiffer shafts.

There's likely nothing wrong with the X Tour iron set structurally - it's probably a case that they no longer fit your swing.

thank you for your reply

so that means either get the x tour reshafted or get the blades ones from any top manufacture like callaway etc

If its gonna be re shafted, which one do you think its best for me either the kbs, project x or dg x100? Though i have heard kbs has its own problems of bending or snapping off the hosel. I have not hit the latest project x and the x100.

I heard the nippon modus shaft was really good too.

Thanks

You are at 14 HDCP. I would suggest you simply get a new set of irons. By the time you reshaft with a premium shaft, you won't save much $$ by getting it reshafted. Here's your probable cost per iron.

Reshaft labor $20 + new grip $8 + regrip labor $3 = $31 per club, not counting shaft.

So $31 x  8 clubs = $248 for labor and regrip.

Cost of shafts: Nippon Modus $37 x 8 = $296  // Project.X  6.0 set of 8 = $296 //  KBS Tour C-Taper $37 x 8 = $296 (the shafts you like are all the same price!)

Total cost to reshaft set = $248 + $296 = $544. That's a lot of $$ to put into 10-year-old irons.

You could get the Callaway XR.Pro upgraded with Project X 6.0 shafts for about $1,000 or you could look at recent trade-in clubs and find one with the shafts you want. Do a test hit, get any tweaks needed, and you can get a slightly used set for about $600.

Also, a Game Improvement head on a heavier, lower launching shaft might be preferable to a true blade iron. True blades are hard to hit - that's why many pros no longer use them.

oh geez,

arent the x tour game improvement irons? and you mean the true blade are muscle back ones?

I can hit a blade like titliest ap2 because i like the feel and it goes further than cb which kind of a different feeling.

I am trying to get the iron set working for me haha

thanks

That's right. The 2005 X.Tour are GI (had nearly a 3 year production run), and the 2007 X.Forged are the Player's - an early muscle-cavity rather than a true blade. The 2009 X.Forged has a cleaner muscle-cavity look.

The X.Tour broke the numbering between the X16 and the X18, X20 and X22 models, which had both standard and Pro/Tour variants. You almost need Maltby's MPF iron family playability charts to see where the X.Tour fits in.

    • Day 206 3-11 Focused on wider backswing and reconnecting arm in downswing. Wasn't really happy with how swing was looking today. Wider backswing is very different for me. Went back to do a some longer pauses at the top. Hit a few foam balls.
    • This is an awesome breakdown. most of the bigger tournaments usually have one wave with the advantage, Thank you for the breakdown. If it is soft then it will be a lower final score
    • Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. • We have a very difficult but mostly showy course this week. Lets see what they got. This course offers so many chances to get into trouble it is really a mental minefield. I am excited to see who can handle it and who cant. Last year we got a foreshadowing of JJ and Rory, I am excited for this year Who do people have winning? what will the winning score be? I am thinking 12 or 13 under
