Has anyone ever traveled overseas to attend a British Open?  I am looking to plan a trip to Royal Birkdale in 2017 and am looking for any tips/suggestions that anyone may have.

I haven't done that, but I think you'll need to plan WAY in advance for your lodging.  Check out sites like www.tripadvisor.com, you may find posts in their forums about lodging for the Opens in the past.  My guess, its not too early to book something right now.  I think you can sort out the rest of it later on.

I have not been there myself, but I work directly with a company over there and have some incredible packages to offer, including play at the Old Course and attending the first two rounds of the Open.
