Hi Guys,

I am new to this group and I would really appreciate feedback to my problem. Ok, here I go.

I have been looking for a new set of irons for several months and, since X-mas is fat approaching I figure it is a great time to have my Fiancee get them for me. She has already agreed to do so and she is awaiting my final decesion and specs. I have tried a multitude of clubs from Adams to Yonex and, everything in between. I started golfing a year ago and, i have progressed rapidly from being a gross player hacking up the course to blasting the pants off of people I am playing with who have been playing for years. I currently own a set of Callaway 2006 Big Bertha's and, they are so big and ugly that I find it hard to even look at them anymore. I also own a set of Mizzy MP-30's that I got from a neighbor and had them bent 2* up. After playing with them, I cant seem to play correctly with the Big berthas anymore is that normal? Anyway, I have been fit fo MP-57's and seversl other brands including the Ping I10's "Green". The one thing I can not figure out is should I really be 2* upright or should I be flat considering i am only 5'7" with 32" arm distance. I do have a very upright steep swing. Also, I have a problem getting the ball to the height I like it to be. I have been hitting them too low and then the ball will roll forever. I want more height on the ball. I had an injury in the military and it does have an effect on my swing speed. I swing about 80- 82 MPH. So, R flex. I have recently tried the Ping G 10, Srixon I-701, TM R7, and honestly I think that the TM R7 R flex steel T step 90 shaft has been the easiest club to hit with a good flight and, solid everything. I would like a second opinion though. Even though you guys can't see my swing Etc... I am sure that some good advice will come. i did like the Srixon but, it had a 6.0 Project X shaft "quite stiff" As, i said I want a good club that does not look like a garden tool "Big Bertha,TM Burner XD, Etc.." I like a thinner top line and something that looks good at address. Thanks in advance.

-A desperate golfr

**update***

Please give me some feedback on the I-701's because, I was hitting them really well today. I was also demoing a mixed set of Ping G10, I10 and Raptures. I liked them all. I liked the look of the i 10 the best but I hit the g10 much better, further, than I did the I10. I liked the rapture however it is just too big looking and is just overall not for me. I just want to see what the general thought is between Srixon I-701 or Ping G10's ??

You have the same physical dimensions as me (height and arm wrist-to-floor length), and I am hitting MP-57s 2* flat. You are also similar in handicap to me, so I would highly recommend the 57s, as well as the Titleist 755. I have no idea how your swing is like, but considering you want a higher launch, you might try flighted rifles or PX high launch, but you should get fitted first. Let us know what your decision is, and good luck!

Fl Golfer, I think the question that you really need to be asking yourself is this. "Am I improving to the point that I want to start and work the ball with my irons and feel is a prority...OR...do I need sweetspot and game improvement to help launch the ball high and hit more greens consistantly?"

Also, I get the impression that you are a younger dude...so I would think swing speed and flexibility standpoint...you should really NOT go to a "game improvement iron" because you have the ability to get the ball airborn easily. I know exactly what you mean about the i10's and the g10s. The G10 is great for a guy 50 years old and up or someone with a declining handicap that needs forgiveness. I think the i10's have a smaller sweetspot then their older brother the i5's...please swing the Ping i5 fitted to your body. They will give you the ease of the Rap/G5/G10 irons without the heavy offset look. I swung the g5's when I was shopping...they are VERY easy to hit...I understand what you are saying.

Also, please swing the new Cleveland cG4 Tour Reds or more game improvement Golds? I can not remember the number/letter combination, but the new cleveland irons with the dampining pad in the cavity is really nice, great feel and sweetspot....not as heavy offset, you will probably like how they look when you sit them down next to the ball.

Finally, recommendation...keep hitting irons over and over...don't buy too quickly.

Well, my Fiancee surprised me with a Mixed set of TM R7's & R7 TP's for Xmas 3,4,5, R7 R Flex TT GS75 Shafts "Hard Stepped" and, 6,7,8,9,P are the TP model with The same hard stepped TT GS75 shafts "Hard Stepped" I was fitted by a local pro who owns a shop near my house. He is not just an owne though he also was on tour in the 80's and still is sponsored by Mizuno. So, when he told me that I was hitting the R7's better than the Mizuno's I believed him. he has helped me with my swing for free several times in is shop on the monitor.

I was having a hel of a time trying to decide between the MP57's TM R& & R7 TP and, The Srixon I-701's. Update, I am glad that I did get the TM's the ball flight is great and, they are easy to hit! Also, I have a used set of Titleist 755's with S flex Tri Spec Shaft. I want to trade with someone or sell them any ideas where the best place or site to do this is?

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
