  2. So I'm starting to use the iPing a bit (practiced for about 45 minutes on my lunch break today) and I just want to make sure I have this right. The only thing this is going to help me with is consistency, right? Meaning, my slight arc (5.1) and closed face (.4-1.7) and tempo (1.7-2.0) are pretty much the way I putt and iPing will help me keep up with that number? I took a measurement, ended up at something crazy like 15.1 consistency, then hit 10 foot practice putts for a long while, then took another measurement (11.4). I think I should probably take a putting lesson to make sure that I'm not doing anything just horribly before I work with this thing too much, right?

  4. Perfect. Thank you.
  5. I had this problem for a while and the pro that I talked to told me to set a second ball behind the one you're going to hit, about 8 inches to a foot behind. Take a slow back swing and hinge when the club hits the second ball. I'm not saying it's the perfect way to do it or anything, but it worked for me and I still go back to it when my irons are getting funky. At the same time, look at someone like Steve Stricker who doesn't really hinge his wrists at all. He still manages to do okay :)
  6. I recently went and played a week down in St. Simon's Island in southern Georgia and tried something a little different. I usually wear a "breathable" golf shirt (Champion or Nike) but this time I got a couple of breathable workout shirts a size smaller. They fit me more snugly and went under my golf shirt and I stayed a whole lot cooler. My biggest issue with the synthetic shirts is that all my white ones end up with brown/yellow rings on the sleeves and the neck.
  7. The only time I play with a partner is when my father-in-law is in town. There's nothing wrong with being a solo. You have more time to think about what you're doing :)
  8. Just curious, what does everyone use to post scores from their iPhone? I've only just gotten an official GHIN number, I've been using oobgolf.com to keep track before now. I have Diablo Golf installed, but I'm not sure if it updates to the USGA or not. Any advice will be appreciated.
  9. Last year I pulled up behind a guy on the second hole and watched him swing and miss on the tee box twice, then make contact with the very end of the toe, shooting the ball straight to his right where it hit the tee marker, popped back up and hit him in the forehead. He shrugged and told me that he gave up and drove away.
  10. I've been lurking here for a while and am starting to come out a bit more and join the discussions. Great community from what I've seen. I"m 33 now and my golf playing has been a series of starts and stops all my life. I first learned when I was around 10 and played a lot for the summers during that time as my mom could drop me at the country club and I could play while she and my sister sat around the pool. I quit in my teens and started again briefly when I first got to college, then quit again for the last 10 or so years until last year when I jumped back out with my father-in-law on the annual trip to St. Simon's. I don't know what was different this time, but I've been crazy addicted ever since. In a good week I'll go play 5 times, in a bad week only 3. My handicap took a big dip at the end of last season, from close to 30 down into the mid teens (15 or so) but at the start of this season I took a set of lessons and ever since it's been rising steadily while I try to put the pieces back together. I'm playing to a 17 right now according to oobgolf.com. Anyway, I enjoy the forum here and the variety of opinions and I look forward to getting to know more people. I have tons of bonehead questions, but I'm a firm believer that people don't say "I don't know" enough. We're all conditioned to feel like we have to know everything and "I don't know" has become a bad thing it seems. There's a ton of stuff I don't know and the only way I'll learn it is if I ask, so I do.
  11. How was the ball fitting for you? I went to one last week and sadly I felt like the Bridgestone guys that were there were annoyed to be there. That and they suggested the e6 to everyone that I saw them fit. I played the e6's last weekend, though, and really liked them more than the AD333s I had been playing. Z stars are a better ball though and I'll buy those when I see them on sale.
  12. Here's my question. Does this rule only come into effect when you are on the course? In other words, can I be standing in the clubhouse and check the weather before I head out? I don't play in any competitions and I only play on a little muni course most of the time where everything is extremely lax, but I was just curious for the future. I'd like to fully understand the rule.
  13. I have a weird hang up about balls when I play and I know it can't make that big a difference, but I pop a new sleeve almost every time I walk onto the first tee. I'll play those 3 balls until they're all lost or until the round ends. If I'm playing badly enough to lose 3, I'll pull from my old/found balls to finish up. If the three balls survive, I'll drop them into the top pocket and pull them first should I need a new ball. The only time I changed things up was when I was playing some Srixon Z's, I played through each sleeve until they were all lost. They're more expensive than my usual balls, and I really wanted to see if they were a lot better. (They were) but I went to a Bridgestone ball fitting last week and figured I try their recommendation for a while, so I'l be playing E6's for the rest of this year more than likely.
  14. I just recently made the change from playing Nike Mojos and Juice balls, realizing that it really does make a big difference to pay a little more for my balls. (Srixon AD333's right now, though I was just given a dozen Z's) Sadly last year I found some great buy on Mojos and Juices, so right now my bag has a TON of those floating around in it. I typically pop a new sleeve and keep those three balls in my pocket as I go. When I blow through those, be it one round or 3, I pull from the Nikes until I'm done with that round then on my next one I open a new sleeve. I should point out, though, that I pretty much ride all the time, so the weight isn't a big issue for me.

  16. I'm pretty new here, but I thought I'd share in this thread anyway. I started playing golf last year after about a 7 year layoff. I discovered that I was sore and tired and had lost yards on all clubs when I came back, but I was also pretty overweight. In the past I've tried low carb, weight watchers, and I've lost weight with most of them, but it always comes back. So this time I decided to avoid a "diet" in the strictest sense and instead changed what I did every day. At the very worst, I wanted to make a better decision at every single meal (Do you really need 2 sandwiches? Wouldn't a grilled chicken sandwich be better than that hamburger?). Optimally, I wanted to change how I was eating entirely and focus on putting a much more balanced diet into my body. I also cut out all alcohol, though I've had a few afternoons or evenings where I have partaken since then. I started in December at 272 pounds and stand today (mar 30) at 228. I've stuck right around 228 for about 2 weeks now, but I also haven't killed myself to make sure every meal is the best weight loss meal ever. I'm ready to drop these last 28 pounds, though, so I'm starting in yoga and I'm going to start walking the golf course with a push cart (at first) when I'm alone. I don't want everyone else to have to wait on me to wheeze my way up the hills. I feel a lot better now. I'm not as tired and best of all I can feel my swing changing. I can get back further in my back swing and can finish around more on the follow through. I'm starting yoga to add even more flexibility and strength and I'm going to start riding a stationary bike while I play Tiger Woods 2012 (I'm a big gamer) so I'm not just crashed out on the couch, but still moving around a bit even while I'm relaxing. I'm also changing out my office chair at home for a balance ball. I'm not sure if it will make any difference, but here's hoping. My biggest suggestion (and this is just from my experience, no expertise at all) is to try to avoid making sweeping life changes all at once. If you eat terrible stuff and never get off the couch, don't switch to chicken breasts and steamed broccoli and go to the gym 5 days a week all of a sudden. I've done it and it's impossible to stick to all of that. Take a step towards making yourself better, then add another. Instead of a vast shock to your system you'll instead ingrain a change then you can make another. Also, don't beat yourself up if you aren't perfect all the time. I freakin' love fried chicken. I just know that I can't eat it all day every day. But a breast and wing with a big plate of vegetables isn't going to kill you, and I've read that very occasional binges can be a good thing in giving your metabolism a wake up call, though I'm not sure if that's really true. Like I said, that's just my experience. I'm a graphic designer, so I only know what I've picked up here and there about health and fitness. I do know that weighing in once a week at the same time is fun when you're getting consistent good results.
