  1. why didn't you ask him to move?
  2. well, i can count the number of times i have hit that shot on a golf course on all my fingers, toes and then some. to a previous poster's point, if a golf course didn't want people doing shot like this, then they should have considered it in the course design. and not created hourglass green with large humps in the middle. Erik, would you answer to the question be different if this was a USGA tourney or even a club tournament? would your answer be different if it was a pro versus versus a single digit handicapper versus a 30 handicap? it is the course's right to ask me not to hit this shot? absolutely. It is also within my rights to ask for a portion of my green fees back. when you get into the golf course business, you assume that people will play the course within the commonly agreed upon rules and practices of golf, unless you explicitly create a rule to the contrary. Erik, what if the next time you played a short 290-yard par 4, the ranger said to you. "Son, we would appreciate if you didn't try to drive the green here. We don't do that around here. It slows play and can leave big marks on the greens. Don't worry, it will probably only cost you a stroke." Would you still be more than happy to follow his advice?
  3. actually on the short grass, however, i didnt take any divot at all.
  4. i was on the green. hitting a flop shot from the green is legal. and necessary in this case.
  5. any advice for what to do when the person with no etiquette is the ranger.
  6. since I just moved I am looking for new courses in my area. the 8th hole on the course i played this morning has an hour glass green with the pin tucked in the front right. I caught my approach thin and ended up on the back right part of the green. not even thinking about it, i took my 60 degree wedge out and hit a flop shot. apparently an 80 year old ranger was watching and gave me a good talking to. "he said-- i don't know who you think you are, but we don't do that around here." (I wanted to say, "chip well", but thought better of it). He then said, "I should throw you off this course now. We don't like you show off types here. And you guys (pointing to the others in my group) should have done something" One of the guys I got paired with (who knew the guy) said something to him and then he walked away.
  7. not even close to true. yes, the clubs are less than 1 year old, but a pro is never going to be playing with a club he has never hit before in a meaningful round of club unless another club recently broke. At most, pros will change their wedges 3-4 times per year.
  8. my top 5 1. Erin Hills 2. Hazeltine National 3. Princeville 4. Bandon Dunes 5. Shinnecock
  9. i read somewhere that Torrey pines doesn't take tee times before 7:30 AM and early tee times are just reserved for walk-ups. Anyone know how early you need to get there to have a realistic shot at getting on the course?
  10. i'd add chaska town course in minnesota to the list as well.
  11. I use an impact bag to ensure that I stay in the right position at impact and to develop more power.
  12. four options here and something I have been thinking about
  13. for that matter, neither is a 4. personally, i liked the old rule because it opens the tourney up to people who can't play in any other USGA event.
  14. not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but they change the max handicap for PubLinx from 8.4 to 4.4. It will definitely improve the quality of the qualify fields, but will eliminate lots of people who just want to play in a USGA event (even if it is just qualifying). http://www.usga.org/championships/ap...y_to_play.html
  15. Kevin is a friend of mine from college, too. I think he has the perfect personality for something like this. He never gets too up or too down.
  16. let me add another BIG recommendation for Kierland, my favorite couse in the area.
  17. great post. the only thing i would add is that as you get to know the starters at courses, if they know you like to play alone, they will help you out. (or at least make sure not to pair you with jerks). Also, if you tip them, they will be much more helpful to you.
  18. will be staying in Dana Point, CA in a week and wanted to see if anyone has any course recommendations for the area. I see that monarch beach golf links is at the hotel, but haven't been able to find much about it online.
  19. i actually liked Crooked Cat better, but both are great courses. very good value for FL, too.
  20. kevin streelman, friend from Duke
  21. thanks for the reponse, that was really helpful. i assume the spin rates on flighted shafts tend to be a bit lower thought, right?
  22. I probably do that fairly often when windy. When you have to deal with midwest crosswinds, you never really know how the wind is blowing higher in the air. what shot would you have played?
  23. exactly what are flighted shafts? i hit some clubs with flighted rifle shafts today; really liked the feel off the club face; didn't like the higher trajectory. exactly what is the difference between this and my Project X shafts?
  24. thanks... i'll probably swing by White Pines tonight.
  25. anyone have any that they like. Usually i take the winter off, but i have a golf trip to Austin in early January that I want to make sure my ballstriking is good for.
