"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 81 (10/13/22): Only had time for a very brief session today. It was hitting into the net. I started trying to just hit 3-9 o'clock shots, but was getting poor contact. So...I went back to preset drills, impact preset. Did about 30 of these and then slowly progressed to short swings.- 17,382 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 79 (10/11/22): More impact pre-set drills, foam balls, followed by limited length/limited speed swings with real balls. I hit 8 iron and driver in the morning. In the evening, same thing, but 7 iron and hybrid. Felt great with all clubs except driver - limited length and speed drills with a driver always seem sort of awkward and hard to me. Anyway, it felt good, like I had clawed my way back from the bad patch I had over the weekend and end of last week, so I decided to do a test. I put the sim on and collected data for a very brief test session. Hit 7 iron, and was hitting them 75% of my normal distance. Only 6 shots, but still ... I had consistent launch angle, consistent distance, and was hitting them very straight with very limited curve. One even read "0" sidespin 🙂- 17,382 replies

Day 78 (10/10/22): Back was a little sore and I practiced only about 15 minutes. Very simple - impact practice, 3-9 length swings and pre-sets, first with an 8 iron and then a teed up driver.- 17,382 replies

Fairway Woods Instead of Irons for Seniors
Big Lex replied to micha's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Not for me...I don't like the look and feel of hitting high lofted wood clubs. I've tried them and I think I make better contact with irons, even longer irons like a 4. I carry a hybrid and a Mizuno Fli Hi 4 iron, which is I gues a hybrid, but very iron-like. -

Day 77 (10/9/22): Again, back to the drawing board, with impact pre-set drills, and small swings, 3-9 length, or less, foam balls. After a couple of days of poor contact and struggling, I was hitting it much better today. Practiced driver, middle iron, and lob wedge.- 17,382 replies

I love Grip 6 belts. Very cool, minimalist design, tons of colors, work great for golf, casual, even dress.

Has Golf Instruction Gotten Too Technical?
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I don't see how it can be too technical, when what we are actually trying to learn is, well, technique. As long as what is being taught or what technology is used to teach is valid, and not pseudo-science, I don't see how a teacher can be too technical. If a teacher is ineffective because he or she is confusing the student with terminology or numbers, or if the teacher is focusing too much on numbers and not observing the student, that's bad "pedagogy," that's not being too technical. But if it's the opposite, and you have the best pure teacher in the world (observant, great communicator, etc.), but they rely on outdated and disproven theories about the golf swing or ball flight, or avoid technical tools because they don't understand them or like them, then that's not going to help a student either. -
"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 75 (10/7/22): Full swing practice, different clubs, trying to get the correct impact position. Impatient, poor session. Hit alot of balls but very few were hit well. Still not able to get the impact feel on full swings from a normal address. I did figure out that I might have been standing a bit too close to the ball, but beyond that I didn't learn much. I began ok, with 3-9 length swings, and good contact and finish position. But I couldn't get that to happen in longer swings more than maybe 1 in 15 shots.- 17,382 replies

Day 74 (10/6/22): Tonight was a very short practice, but it was productive, relatively speaking. Just short 3-9 swings, rehearsing impact position first, and then concentrating on feeling that position during the actual swing. And while not golf specific, I have resumed some core, leg, and back strength exercises I was doing regularly about 3 years ago but stopped when the pandemic hit.- 17,382 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 73 (10/5/22): Did about an hour of iron swings, starting with wedge up to 2I, and then even a few 3W shots. I was rehearsing the impact position and then going with a regular swing, ranging from about a 1/2 swing up to almost a full effort swing (meaning no impact pre-set shots). I hit it quite well, although they weren't flying all that far. Side errors were small.- 17,382 replies

Day 72 (10/4/22): Impact pre-set drills, from there to 1/2 swings. Thinking of my left hip leading, getting my weight forward, and allowing my right shoulder to "relax" so it can work down. My old swing videos show me IE-ing, straightening my right arm early, and my shoulders too level through impact with my right shoulder too high. I am concentrating on getting my right shoulder to be "below" the left shoulder at impact, and have my right elbow still bent at impact. Soon I will need to take a series of videos and send them to the teacher, and then get another online lesson.- 17,382 replies

Day 71 (10/3/22): A long session with impact pre-set swings. Still struggling to get into the position from a normal address. I was doing fairly well for a while, then went backwards. I can get in the correct positions in the lower body, but often my shoulders are still too level and I get poor contact. Tonight I worked on letting my right shoulder work down and under more, and not so level and across. This fixed contact dramatically, and it looked correct on video, but this was in very short swings at low speed.- 17,382 replies

FWIW, my answer is that I'm taking the hole-in-one. I don't have one. They are indeed largely a matter of luck, but you need an awful lot of luck to actually get one. I've been close, but never had one, so if it's a freak wish thing, I'll use it for my hole in one. I believe that best round of my life is still in me, and am happy to enjoy the journey of getting there.

I stipulated in the WYR that it would be your FIRST hole-in-one. Anyone care to change their answer?

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 67 (9/30/22): Today I went back to preset drills. I did a short session of them, then went to abbreviated backswing swings, trying to capture the same feel. Then I played a simulated round, trying to see how often I could get the impact position with real swings in a real round. I give myself a C. I think I probably executed the move correctly in maybe 1/3 of the full swings. A second third were not perfect but better than my usual swing. The other 1/3 were bad swings, the old swing. I also felt a little pain in my neck and so I was swinging sort of easy, and I skipped post-round practicing to rest it.- 17,382 replies

Would you rather #53: Would you rather.... Shoot 10 shots worse than your typical score, hit the ball terrible most of the round, make mistakes that annoy you, but have your first ever hole-in-one, ~or~ Shoot your best round ever, passing whatever milestone you are aiming for (break 70, break 80, etc.) by 3 shots, but without a hole-in-one or other "special" holes or shots.

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 66 (9/29/22): Went backwards today a little. I wanted to see if I could improve my wedge striking and hit 2 sand wedges. I began with impact pre-set drills. But I rushed my way into full swings and started paying too much attention to launch monitor numbers. I lost the feel that I had been building up, and started raking balls and didn't realize what I was doing for nearly an hour. I stopped and went back to the impact preset drills, but by this time I was feeling a bit sore in the lower back and needed to stop. It will probably take a couple of days and alot of patience to fix this and get back to where I was.- 17,382 replies

Patrick Reed - The Man, the Child Abuse (?), Redemption (??)
Big Lex replied to Phil McGleno's topic in Tour Talk
I don't know what he's doing with these lawsuits; I'm not really following it. On the surface they seem stupid and groundless, like he is just making trouble for people and enemies for himself. I think it's sad. I have always liked him, I guess because people seem to dislike him so much. On cheating...I'm always skeptical of these kinds of stories, because people do lie and make things up to slander others, and then stories get repeated and embellished. Maybe he cheated, maybe he didn't. I don't think cheating is uncommon on tour. There was the whole Gary Player Tom Watson thing. In a match play event probably 30 years ago, I remember watching Paul Azinger blatantly cheating by improving his lie in the rough with these repeated practice swings which were smoothing the grass down behind his ball. In a blog post recently, Geoff Shackelford went off on modern tour pros stepping on the ground behind their ball to improve their lie. Lexi Thompson had the issue marking her ball. Cheating occurs. It's wrong, it should be called out, and penalized. But people should not be branded for life as "cheaters" IMO. Mistakes are made. If someone is a "good guy" everyone likes, people sometimes look the other way at questionable actions. But if you're Patrick Reed with a "reputation" for cheating, everyone is watching you out of the corner of their eye, and everything you do on and off the course is viewed through that lens. The fact that he was probably abused makes one even more inclined to be a bit more sympathetic towards him. -
Callaway Apex PW, AW Vokey 54, 58 I'm thinking of dropping the 54 so I can have another choice in my long clubs. Not sure if that's a good idea or not

Most of the time I think I would be happier playing with the second group. But I think either group can be either fun or not fun to play with. I think it depends on their attitude and self-awareness., If they are nice and respectful to me, are in a good mood or at least not stomping around angry, not jabbering, etc., they can play any way they choose to play. If I'm in a group where we are all competing, then hands down of course I want the former.

Day 65 (9/28/22): More impact pre-set drills, transitioning to 1/2 swings and looking for the same impact feel. Tonight I was hitting them fat and getting poor contact. I concentrated on leading more with the lower body on the forward swing and both low point and contact improved. I played the front 9 at Winged Foot with a friend (simulator) and shot 40, with a double on the 1st hole. Striking has definitely improved in these 65 days. More of it in the last week or so, after the golf lesson.- 17,382 replies
