hitting the ball sky high off the tee
playfromthetips11 replied to mdiogo's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I bet you are flipping the club head. Does your tee move? I fight this problem most days. I have an 8.5 degree drive and still hit it a mile in the air. I took a lesson to try and fix it, and have gotten better, but it still sky the ball quite a few times a round. -
I have one. It is a piece of crap. I hate it. Bought it for 120 yard shots. Goes 100 same as my 56*. It cant possibly be my swing could it. No, in truth, i love it around the greens. Just frustrating on the full shots thus far.

The guy writing the article is just a tool. Have you been to a college baseball game lately. The straight brim is everywhere. I dont particularly like it, but I bend mine sharp and have a fish hook on it. What does that mean? People are going to have to find something to hate, this dude just picked Ricky Fowler. I follow his twitter, seems like a good dude. There are much worse role models on the course, that is for sure.

Titleist 710 CB. Sweet. -
If Morgan Pressel or Christie Kerr or Paula Creamer or Natalie Gulbis are on I am watching. I love watching good golf, but I am still a man. I hate tennis, but I watch Sharapova.

3 straight rounds in the high 70s. A first for me, of course i shot 85 yesterday to break the string.
-
Had 5 birdies my last time out. went bogey bogey double to finish. 2 par 5s. Had 72 in my sights and blew it. Still my second best round ever - 76. Best ball striking day I can ever remember.

I am self taught as well. I have contemplated many times getting lessons, but after a talk with a family friend who was a teaching pro for years have decided against it. I mentioned it to him a couple of years ago when I played a round with him at his course in Myrtle Beach and he asked what I wanted from my game. I told him I wanted to shoot par. He asked me if i had a job. I replied yes. He asked me if I had kids. I said yes. He told me to forget about getting lessons. He went on to tell me that when he was playing tour events, his 40 hour a week job was hitting golf balls. He told me unless i had time to put in hours of work weekly, the lessons would be a waste of money. After the round, in which i shot 83, he asked me did i have fun. I said yes. He said that is all that matters.

I am celbrating, I broke 80 for the first time today!!!
playfromthetips11 replied to Jcp907's topic in Golf Talk
not to bring you down, but i broke 80 for the first time in 15 years a month or so ago and have only broken 90 once since then. i thought i had it figured out and started trying to birdie every hole and BLAM! 95. just treat your 74 as another round and play the next one like you are trying to break 80 for the first time. -
I dont get the whole sandbagging thing. I am a competitive guy. But I want to be the best of the best when i do things. I dont want to beat a 20 handicapper(no offense guys), i want to beat a scratch golfer. Not with my pencil, but with my game. the "sandbaggers" out there are just washed up losers who need that 5th flight trophy to make them feel like they still have it.

The Players is a major - the Masters isn't
playfromthetips11 replied to The Recreational Golfer's topic in Tour Talk
Evidently this guy couldnt get tickets or got thrown out of Augusta for something. I have been to both the Master and a US Open(Pinehurst) and the Masters was far and away more impressive. Granted the US Open is a much harder test of golf, and I love watching Par win. -
i dont really know if the swing speed give an amatuer, who is inconsistant, an accurate distance estimator. of course most of the launch monitors and simulators are in the stores to sell drivers so they are probably off too. i do know that at a ball fitting and a club fitting on separate occasions at different locations my swing speed was around 105. i am a big guy with a lot of power, but the SkyCaddie GPS tells me i hit my drives about 240-250. that doesnt seem to jive with the swing speed number but what do i know? i am sure i have tons of backspin and my trajectory is wack as well. for all of the high handicap 300 averages out there, get a gps and mark your ball, hit it, walk to where it ends up and read it and weep.

KEYS to breaking 90
playfromthetips11 replied to wildcorndog's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
lean to take your medicine. there may be a 4 foot gap between those trees, but trust me, punch it out into the fairway. will save you a ton of strokes. -
Uncalled for. I would have hit the ball back at them. It is one thing to drag around and hold people up, but you offered to let them through and the didnt. Their fault.

Does Anyone Play Tour Edge????
playfromthetips11 replied to motsco's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I recently picked up and Exotics XLD and I love it. I have never been more consistent with my driver before. So far anyway, I am satisfied immensely with the purchase. I would recommend to anyone. -
At what handicap should you change your irons?
playfromthetips11 replied to Woters's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Dont do it. I thought my irons (Cobra Gravity Back) were holding me back last year and got a set of Nike CCI Forged thinking a more players iron would get me out of the mid 80's rut. I went backwards. Sure when i hit the new irons flush they felt better and performed flawlessly, but how often did i hit them perfectly flush. About 1 out of 8. Until you try it, you wont see the benefit the extra forgiveness actually gives you. I would work on chipping and putting. Especially if you are hitting your current irons well. -
Anyone using this driver out there? I used a friend of mines a couple rounds last week and really liked it. Much more forgiving than my Titleist 905. His was 10.5* which is more than i like. Has anyone used this driver for an extended period? Thoughts?

SkyCaddie SG5. Love it. Although it really burst my "how far i hit my driver" bubble. -
It has a lot to do with where you hit the ball on the clubface. If you watch any swingvision sequences on youtube of the pros you will see that they hit the ball high on the clubface creating less spin. Now how you start hitting the ball higher on the clubface is a whole different animal.

What leads you to believe you are getting a lot of backspin?

Apparantly, I am somehow coming over the top pretty hard. I have a terrible pull hook that is killing my game. It is more prevalent with the driver and fairway woods, but it jumps in on other clubs as well. I have seen tips and strategies for correcting slices, but have really run across help for the over the top pull hook. Does anyone know of any drills to help remedy this issue? I changed my grip (made it weaker) towards the end of my round and it seems to have resolved the hook part but the pull is still there. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Shot 77. Best round ever. No doubles or 3 putts. Missed a birdie on 18 that would have given me par on the back.

83. 2 birdies. 2 lost OB. 2 doubles. 1 triple.
