  1. I use Maxfli Powermax Irons.. I got them 2 years ago or so for $200 from Sports Authority. (Supposably marked down from $400, although I never saw them actually sell at that price.) Maybe that's what he was using? TaylorMade used to own the brand, but now apparantly Dick's Sporting Goods picked it up and TM is no longer affiliated. My irons do the job. They are ultra forgiving and carry far enough. They were/are my first irons I ever bought. They are also the next thing in my bad that will see an upgrade.
  2. tgw.com as well.
  3. I'm fairly new too, but my first iron set came with 4-GW, and then I went out and picked up a SW and a LW. I'm still figuring out the LW, and am much more comfortable with the SW around the green. The GW gets a lot more use than the LW. I'm slowly getting more comfortable with the lob though. I think you made the right choice with the gap wedge.
  4. Big hitter? No. Big slicer? Yes .... My best friend (the person who got me into all of this) hits about 280 consitantly with his drives, and hits his pitching wedge from about 150 or so... And most people we play with comment on how big he hits...
  5. I use Scottrade, and have no qualms at all. It's $7 a trade and the website works great. And I bought $1000 worth of F when it was at $2... my first ever individual Stock Purchase.
  6. General office work for a small consulting firm.. also finishing up my B.S. in Accounting. And then it's off to grad (maybe law) school.
  7. According to what I could find online, my PW and GW are 48 and 52... so 56 and 60 should finish it off pretty well... I'm planning on using 4 wedges and dropping the 5 wood and 3 iron in favor of a hybrid.. And on the Volkey.. yeah that's one those things where as soon as I saw what I wrote it was too late to edit. :D I'm going to read up more on bounce... thanks for all of the input!
  8. Well I 'officially' started playing golf in August of 2007. My buddy gave me a vintage mix-match set of clubs, I bought a cheap putter and driver, and off I went to the driving range. I practiced and played on the cheap courses for about 4 months, and finally got to where I could hit a fairway with my drives and my score was sub 130. (LOL no lie). I think my baseball years made the beginning of my golf years much more difficult. Then my golf buddy tore an ACL, and I got frustrated and stopped for a while. Now here I am about a year later and it has sucked me back in. It seems like I hit everything better now, and golf is a lot more fun when you aren't zig zagging down every hole all day. And I'm actually improving this time around. It's a lot of fun, and even when I was "that guy" on the course, it's was still addicting and hasn't left me yet. Still it's much more fun when your balls go straightish most of the time. I'm hooked. Anyway, just thought I'd say Hi.
  9. Thanks. Still learning the game, I find myself missing the greens more often than not, so I figure some wedges will be the most helpful thing I could add right now. But at the same time, I still tend to miss-hit every now and then. I'm not really at the skill level to utilize added control anyway, but if I'm spending that much money on wedges, I want to be able to use them for a long time. Sounds like the Clevelands fit the bill.
  10. I'm new and these will be my first good wedges.. Right now I'm using a gap wedge that came with my iron set for all of my wedge shots. Which will be more forgiving for a new golfer? Which gives more control? I'm thinking about buying a 56 and a 60 degree. Which do you use? Why? Thanks!
  11. This is what works for me: Instead of focusing on the putt, focus on the shot that got you on the green. Instead of "wow IF I make this put, I'll get a birdie," try "that was a great iron shot; it left me with such an easy putt for bird!" It's almost like you expect to make the putt; like the thought of missing never comes to mind. You stay positive by focusing on the great shot(s) that got you to the green.
  12. Right now I'm using a cheap Wilson Harmonized Blade. I bought it right before my first ever golf outing without knowing anything. Now I'm used to it, and consider my putting the best part of my game. However, the last time I went to Golfsmith the Ping Answer Redwood Blade felt great. There are a couple of clubs I want to replace before the putter though, so for now I'm sticking with the ol' Wilson.
  13. thanks for the reply. I ended up going out and buying them tonight, along with the 3h to round out the set. The heads on these things are massive, and just hitting wiffle balls around my living room, i can see a huge improvement. i figure i can learn on these, and then in a year or so if i'm still going strong, i'll have a better idea of what i want. (right now it's the ping rapture irons, but at $1000 i think i'll wait till i can actually hit the ball )
  14. Here's a link: http://www.sportsauthority.com/produ...entPage=search The reviews on the SA website all look rosey, but that's not saying much.
  15. Hello everyone, I just started playing golf about a month ago, and I already want to upgrade my old mismatched hand me down irons. Has anyone had any experiences with Maxfli Irons? They have a set on sale at Sports Authority for $200. I would just go hit them, but I'm still new and don't really know what to look for anyway. Would I be better off spending my $200 on used irons or a different new set?
  16. I'll probably play a leauge or two on yahoo...
  17. Most of the setups I've seen with four wedges drop the 5w, and substitute the 3i with a hybrid.
  18. I say go for it. You are more likely to hold on to a putter for a long time than almost any other club. Just make sure you test out tons of them before making a commitment.
