And it only took you 19 posts to catch on?

I I was rating #1. It represents Tiger. Lighten up Valleygolfer. I don't read Chinese and really can't tell if it represents you or not.
-
Zero. Because your avatar should represent you.

So, what's any of that have to do with "Jack or Tiger: Who's the greatest"? Jack used the equipment available to him, Tiger uses the equipment available to him, and so too did all of their peers. When you want to make comparisons on who was the greatest, you have to include equipment by default. Do you think anyone could set a pole vault record now using a bamboo pole? Here was the comment: I'm not taking a position on who was best but as to length there is no comparison. In their primes with the same equipment, it would take a driver and wedge for Tiger to reach Jack's best drive. 354 yards in the old days was a solid par four. No longer. Championship courses from the old days are now obsolete.

Lets put it this way. If I used the modern ball and you used the old ball and all other things being equal the modern ball would go farther. Why do you think the yardages have to be increased so the course is at least playable instead of a pitch and putt course. Today I am watching the Wells Fargo tournament and I believe it was Rory Mc Ilroy and his drive on one hole was 354 yards. And then there were a few others that were close to that.

According to Jack it's the ball that has changed the game not the clubs. http://www.nicklaus.com/design/pgachampion/interview-jack-nicklaus.php

This was long before Tiger switched to the new technology. You mean Tiger wasn't using the new Nike ball or whatever he used at the Masters? According to Jack the biggest influence on distance is the modern ball not the clubs. I have to agree with him.

I envy you. That tired feeling is a good one. I hope you don't cramp up at night.

How do you become a 'slope rater'?
camper6 replied to Dialit's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
If you can find someone in your area through the U.S.G.A. they would have a manual outlining exactly how a course is measured and how each hole is rated and the basis of how it's done. These manuals are passed out to all individuals who rate courses for handicap purposes. -
Off topic. Your avatar is intriguing. So I looked for a solution and this is what I got. Everyone here will probably leap to answer this as it is such a beautiful chapter of mathematics, but i got here first, so i will try my turn. Basically one needs to understand the connection between exponential functions and trig functions. One way is via differential equations. e.g. the equation f'' + f = 0, has 2 independent solutions. that measn that given any two numbers a and b, you can find a unique solution f such that f(0) = a and f'(0) = b. This is also true for imaginary numbers. So let a = 1 and let b = i. Then f(x) = e^(ix) is the desired solution, since then f'(x) = ie^(ix), and e^(i0) = 1, and ie^(io) = i. But also f(x) = cos(x) + isin(x) has f'(x) = -sin(x)+ icos(x), hence again f(0) = 1, and f'(0) = i. But there is only one solution with these initial conditions so we are forced to conclude that e^(ix) = cos(x) + isin(x). Now set x = pi and what do you get?

I have been golfing for over 50 years and have never seen a phone number on a golf ball. But it might be a great way to pick up chicks on ladies night. I hope they promote that idea. I mean man if you want to be silly I can join in.

Yep you are being taken to task for keeping that putter and making an assumption that someone (rejected) it. It doesn't take much moral fiber to figure that one out. You have no idea how it got there. The guy that lost it could have had it drop out of his bag and couldn't remember where he lost it and hoped that someone would turn it in at the end of the round if they found it. Where is the line drawn with balls? Well I am an old guy and in the old days we engraved our names on a ball and if someone found it they turned it in. Balls that were not engraved had no chance of being turned in to the rightful owner but were placed on the counter in a glass bowl and were available for purchase. Caddies looked for balls after the course was closed and they got tips for turning in golf balls that were engraved. Now when it comes to balls, a ball is abandoned as lost after being searched for or not even looked for so I don't think many people are going to be standing in line at the pro shop waiting for a lost ball to be turned in. They don't abandon clubs in the normal course of events. But if it soothes your conscience, yes I am a thief. I keep balls I find in the woods but if there is a name on it I give it back. Anyone who engraves their name on a ball does it for a reason. It's identification and they expect it back. That in your estimation is being careful and responsible is it not? The look on someone's face when you give them something back that they thought was gone forever is worth the price of admission.

Does anyone have any experience with Pentax DSLR cameras?
camper6 replied to DarkPrince's topic in The Grill Room
When it comes to cameras it all depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are going to need big enlargements then lots of pixels is what you need. If you are going to need telephoto lens, then get the best you can find. But if all you need is 4 x 6 prints just about anything will do. I did a lot of film work, even had my own darkroom. I had one of the first 35mm SLR Pentax Cameras made and I still have it. That was when the Japanese overtook the German market for cameras. Now all I have is a small Canon someone gave to me and it suits my purposes nicely. What I miss is through the lens viewing instead of trying to line up a shot through the back of the camera on a bright day. -
Don't forget to send us a picture when the installation is complete.

But unlike you and camper6 I retain the ability to keep an open mind and to think critically. (camper6: Good post. ME: no, dumb post) Just by saying something like that you don't have the ability to keep an open mind and to think critically. You are horribly biased and a legend in your own mind. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
-
Well, I found a putter in the woods, and a left-handed Ping B-60 at that! (I'm left-handed) Did I turn that club in? No. Why? Because obviously someone chucked it into the woods in frustration & didn't bother to go looking for it. That's not even a 'lost' club. That's a rejected club. Mine. Well if it was me I wouldn't make that assumption. I would turn it in and if it wasn't claimed after a reasonable time I would claim it as. Mine.
-
Not at my club. If I left it on the course I would expect to see it again and it wouldn't be because I lucked out. It would be because of integrity.
-
I'm glad I don't golf at your club either. Thanks. To be clear, I would never take anything that doesn't belong to me. That doesn't mean I expect everything I lose to be returned. Some people here seem to have a hard time understanding that. Thinking a lost club is gone does not mean I steal....good lord. That's not the way you put it the first time around. If you are not careful and responsible and you lose things or leave them places unattended, you increase the likelihood that the item(s) may be taken. This whole notion of whether or not one deserves a certain outcome is just dumb. I have never said anyone deserves anything for losing a club. Not in so many words but yes that was the gist of your argument. I don't know what else to say. I have been extremely lucky to some I guess. I don't think it takes a lot to keep your golf clubs from being stolen. Forget about rape. O.K. Your grandmother goes shopping and leaves her purse in the shopping cart. She loses all her pension money and is now broke. Did she 'deserve' to be broke? You see in my estimation people have a moral obligation to return that which is lost and not theirs. To say you have to be careful is true. But we are talking golf courses now , not back alleys.

So I guess match play isn't as easy as you seem to think. According to the best comparison available, and whether you look at wins or high finishes, it's about twice as hard as stroke play. Jack Nicklaus was no slouch either at match play having won the U.S. Amateur twice. Correct me if I am wrong but that's match play.
-
And what if I am not careful and responsible? Do I still 'deserve' to have someone pick up my club and keep it? My son left his clubs out one night after the pro shop was closed not realizing it was closed. The clubs were still there the next morning. Now he was not careful and not responsible but the people that walked by them were careful and responsible and didn't take them home. So your idea of careful and responsible are different than mine. A cart goes over a bump and a putter falls off. Does the golfer 'deserve' to lose that club if someone else finds it? I'm glad you don't golf at our club.

You just don't go ahead and lay the synthetic turf down. You have to consider drainage etc. I don't know if this site allows links to commercial establishments but if you google this you will get a you tube video on how it's done. diy synthetic putting green installation

How do you become a 'slope rater'?
camper6 replied to Dialit's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
No. I didn't reply directly to the post which would have given the spammer the reply he needed. I replied in a separate post and to see it the spammer would have had to come back into the thread and you could have nailed him. I have never reported anyone in my life so please forgive me for the miscue. It was a bunch of garble and I had no idea it was spam till you mentioned it. I thought it was one of our nutcases posting. How can I identify spam as such to report it. -
Good post. The defense rests?

Tiger Woods in Charlotte will not hold press conferences?
camper6 replied to ConsistentGolf's topic in Golf Talk
The press has a way of quoting stuff out of context or leaving things out of interviews. They like sensationalism and would probably want to concentrate on his private life than his golf life. I don't blame him. It's the same with politics. The press is irresponsible. Look what they did to Fuzzy Zoeller. He never got over it. -
Point being, if you're careless with your equipment you deserve what you get. That's the mantra of people that steal clubs. I followed behind a group where one of the players had obvious mental problems and left a club behind on several holes. Should I have kept them?
