  1. At what rate? Mine is about 10 yards a year.
  2. Watching the television broadcast today. Player with ball deep in bunker sand. Could not see the ball. Had to uncover it to get a shot at it. The announcer stated the player had to identify his ball. Since when in a bunker? The ball was so deep the player elected to take a one shot penalty and drop in the bunker again. Anyone else see this?
  3. Bubba's shot was to win the Masters. That trumps any other shot.
  4. Canada converted to the metric system. Funny but only partially. The golf courses still use yards but did use the metric system after the conversion for awhile and then abandoned it. The reason the U.S. didn't convert after initially starting to and having Canada join was the cost of converting all the gas pumps in the country.
  5. Check the difference in dimples. That's what determines ball flight. http://wings.avkids.com/Book/Sports/instructor/golf-01.html
  6. I am a Canadian and cannot understand why the XL pipeline extension from Alberta, Canada was denied by Obama after it had previously been approved. That would have carried oil from the Bakken fields in North Dakota (a domestic supply) as well to the refineries in the Midwest and all the way to the refineries in Port Arthur Texas. And the construction costs would be entirely born by Trans Canada pipelines. It wouldn't cost the U.S. anything. Now that's a source of oil from a stable country instead of the Middle East. The current price of gas is being affected by threats from Iran. They are already denying gas to UE countries. That type of threat sends speculators scurrying to buy oil now expecting a rise in the future. Incidentally. The unemployment rate in North Dakota is the lowest in the country. Something like 3.5 %. The environmentalists are influencing the current U.S. government and it's an election year so nothing is going to happen till November.
  7. What are you going to make it out of? I would suggest PVC pipe. Easy to cut and easy to glue together. Try a recycling yard for a good deal. For netting? Tough one. Try a fishing supply dealer but make sure the netting holes are small enough to stop a golf ball.
  8. What if you were playing in the club championship tournament finals and the match was halved at the end of 17 holes. You had the honor and hit your ball a modest two hundred fifty yards to the middle of the fairway, leaving a simple six iron to the pin. Your opponent then hits his ball, lofting it deep into the woods to the right of the fairway. Being the golfing gentleman that you are, you help your opponent look for his ball. Just before the permitted five minute search period ends, your opponent says: "Go ahead and hit your second shot and if I don't find it in time, I'll concede the match." You hit your ball, landing it on the green, stopping about ten feet from the pin. About the time your ball comes to rest, you hear your opponent exclaim from deep in the woods: "I found it!". The second sound you hear is a click, the sound of a club striking a ball and the ball comes sailing out of the woods and lands on the green, stopping no more than six inches from the hole. Now the real "what if" in this story...... What if you had your opponent's ball in your pocket?
  9. Because you can't use artificial equipment to improve your game. Contacts are worse than a belly putter. Anyway the belly putters have been in use a very long time. http://twitter.com/#!/Keegan_Bradley/status/169577420263919616/photo/1
  10. There is always the exceptions to the rule. As a senior I am only going by personal experience. Keegan Bradley won one major. And his winning put could have been made with a hockey stick.
  11. I can remember the Sam Snead croquet style putting. I think it was banned because it just didn't look good on television.
  12. In other words folks. The long putter and the belly putter are not such a threat to the game are they? I haven't checked yet but I wonder if it's a standard fixture on the Champions tour? In my experience people switch when their eyes go bad.
  13. No one has won the Masters using a long putter. In fact I can't think of any major won by anyone using a long putter.
  14. So I am guessing that Digby is in Nova Scotia. Isn't global warming wonderful. Why they want to stop it is beyond me. Snow and cold weather in Rome and Europe. Maybe the climate has just reversed. I am in Northern Ontario and the earliest the golf courses have opened the greens is in April. I hate temporary greens and will golf late into the season instead. It might be cold but at least the greens are in good shape.
  15. Only the draft version satisfies me with this beer.
  16. Those look rich, rich, rich. Very good work. I am wondering how you are able to take night shots with a digital camera. I am a veteran of 35mm photography. No problem with time exposures.
  17. Hasn't the tradition of golf been to make rules to prohibit cheating and allow the players, for the most part, to self-police themselves on the "honor" system? Isn't this a game of moral integrity? The tradition of golf hasn't been only to make rules to prohibit cheating. Otherwise the rule book would be size of one page. I wouldn't say most but many, many players have only a rudimentary knowledge of the rules so how can they truly police themselves by the honor system. And it's the same thing with the discussion we are having here. How many golfers are there out there that have no idea that a smart phone could be illegal. That's why they try to make the rules and that's why it's so tough on the rules makers. Just watch the flak when a player is told he can't use the GPS system on his smart phone because of the other apps. Who is going to tell the player?
  18. But then they are trying to preserve the 'tradition' of golf as much as they can. When they get overwhelmed with technology they often have to cave in.
  19. Wouldn't it have been much simpler to outlaw all rangefinder devices in the first place? For me it kind of ruined the game when you could see the yardage to the hole but don't know what club to use anyway. So what do you use in a tournament when a rangefinder is not allowed? Seems to me you would lack experience in judging distance. And no rangefinder in the world is going to sink a putt for you.
  20. Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.
  21. Aha but can you clarify please. Can you have the SmartPhone with you at all in your bag or elsewhere on your person. In other words is it legal to have a device that is not being used with you if it is non conforming? I am having a tough time putting this into words. For instance if you carry a wind vane in your bag and are not using it can you be disqualified for just having it there? Is it the same story for a Smart Phone?
  22. Yes seriously. You're not even supposed to take the device on the course if the app is on the phone and I don't know if there is a way you can kill the app. So if you inadvertently leave the device in your bag and don't even use it are you going to call yourself on it? Who really needs the app anyway?
  23. Everyone is just going to ignore the rule. Who is going to call them on it?
  24. I suppose the best weather for golf in Canada would be around Windsor. The coast is too wet in the winter.
  25. Related information. I remembered this. Ridiculous AND a violation of Rule 14-3 Artificial Devices. Annika Sorenstam brought a thermometer and wind gauge to a pro-am in Dallas many years ago that resulted in her being penalized or DQ’d for carrying (not even using) these devices. Unless you have a handicap (i.e. physical impairment) that requires that you know the temperature precisely just to compete - your corneas might freeze - leave your thermometer at home.
