I have been debating replacing the grip on my 2 year old Cleveland Classic #1. The first year I used the stock red win grip (which was firm and cheap). I replaced it in year 2 with a winn grip medium sized black pistol. This grip is very shock absorbant without completly numbing. However I am starting to think I did not need to use a medium sized grip. I have small hands I am 5' 6", and wear a cadet large glove. My putter is a 34" but I usually grip the club towards the bottom of the grip. this pretty much renders a medium grip void. I have found my search for the perfect grip/putter fit to be endless. There is nothing worse than getting a club regripped only to realize in your 1st round it is not a good fit. So my questions are do I stay with the medium grip if it is working, though I am convinced there is some better fit out there. Can anyone recommend a standard sized grip, that has a good feel, but is somewhat shock absorbant? I was looking at Golf Pride Tour Tradition, Golf Pride Player wrap or a lamkin L 3GEN Pistol Smooth Standard? Any feed back would be appreciated!

Kind of late to the discussion, But I bought a Cleveland Classic putter a few years back to replace my Odyssey White Steel # 1. My Odyssey had the ball coming off the face, just too hot. I tried a Cleveland classic # 1 at local NOrthway 8 golf and loved this club. The face is soft, yet responsive. I compared the cleveland against every ping and scotty cameron in the building and still prefered the cleveland. And for $69 (and I had a $25 gift card) how could I go wrong. I replaced the grip with a winn mid-sized and never looked back. The only issue I have is the club feels alitte heavy for a 34". However I have been unable to find a putter with such a soft feel, for the comparable price!

Get Fitted for Clubs Get good wedges early Stop switching putters ever year. Dont even pick up the 4i, replace it with a 4H or 7W. Spend more time around the greens. Learn to chip, punch & pitch. Learn a smooth swing. Dont try to hit the ball too hard. Harder is not better. Dont try and "go for it" on every shot. Take some lessons with 1 instructor (no fishing for answers or quick fixes) get in shape, do some yoga for the back Buy a stand bag and Walk-walk-walk (dont ever take a cart) enjoy!

I have been looking for the right putter for the last few years. I have always had a difficult time figuring out what fits and what feels right. I have always had the mind set that no matter what club or putter I have, what if there is one out there that is a better fit. How do you know unless you try them all on the course, under pressure etc. In my search I have bought 2 and struggle with the choice of which one to keep in my bag. Or just move on to finding a new one My putters are: 1) Odyssey white steel #1, 34" regular stock grip 2) Cleveland Classic #1, 34" Mid sized Winn Grip. The odyssey feels lighter, better weighted, but is much more firm. (prefer softer) The Cleveland feels heavier in the blade, a bit bulkier but is soo much softer on the face. I replaced the Odyssey with the Cleveland because I was over hitting the ball. I have had some success with the cleveland. However any success is most likely the craftsman and not the tools. In a perfect world I would like to combine both the lightness and softness. So my questions are: Can anyone reccommend a good putter that is not bulky, not heavy, has a soft feel? When confronted with a choice of 2 putters, each of which has its own set of pros and cons, how do you choose the right one? And does the search ever end?

Switching Putters during season? Putting help!
Elmer posted a topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have the dilema of having 2 putters. 1 is my cleveland classic 1 (34 in) which is my normal putter. my stand by is a 34 oddessey white steel #1, which used to be my everyday putter. When at home, in the basement I put with the Oddessy on a felt putting mat. My clubs reside during the year in the trunk of my car. I shoul note I only get to practice putting when I have snuck away to run a load of laundry in the basement. My dilema is that I have never been able to find that "right" putter, but have settled on the ones I have (partially due to price and $). Both clubs have pros and conns. The cleveland has a bigger sweet spot, feels slightly lighter, has a mid sized grip and feels softer. Better for lag puts. The Oddesy White steel, has a smaller sweet spot, feels shorts and heavier, has a little more pop and a smaller grip. More confident on shorter puts. It should be noted I tend to 2 put, with a few 3 puts sprinkled in. I usually land the ball atleast 10 feet from the hole and then 2 putt. When I am putting well, there is no question about switching. When I dont there is doubt about the flat stick I am using. I play once a week in a league and less frequently in the off season, so it is not like I can switch every week. I am going to be playing this week, in what looks like the last time this season and was considering switching putters, to give my old back up a try? So my question are: how often does anyone switch back and forth between putters? Would you switch knowing you may never be content? How do you know when you have found the "right" or "perfect" putter? would you switch to your back up for the last round of the year? Should I give up golf and just take up chess? -
I stuggled for 3 years with trying to use a 4 hybrid (taylormade 22 degree). Finally this week, I gave up and bought an used (but in prime condition) Callaway Big Bertha II, 7 wood, with steel head. Already I am now making those 180 yard shots, that I was failing to hit well with the hybrid. The hybrid just seemed like work when i tried to hit it. I would always rather choke down on my 5 wood than hit my hybrid. The 7 wood is effortless to hit and knocks it high. Of course all the sales people were dumb founded when I asked for a 7 wood. They also took a 1/2 hour to find one of 3 of them in the store.....

I carry both a 56 and 60 volkey wedges in my bag. I am debating dropping one out to lighten my load when I walk. I use the 60 for chipping around the green, bumping within 20 years and chips no more than 50 yards away. I like using the 60 because it hits, hops and sticks with minimal role. The 56 is used for anything 50 yards to 80 yards. (I know I dont have distance, but I have 1 busted shoulder and 1 repaired one, and do the best I can) I was orginally thinking of dropping the 56 and getting a 54 My current wedge set up is 50-56-60 I was thinking of switching to 50-54-60. But now I am thinking of just going 50-56. I can chip, bump and pitch with my 56, but it does not stick as much, which is why I have stuck with my 60. Is it more beneficial to drop the 60 and focus on doing it all with the 56? Should I switch to lower loft set up 54-60 Should I just do what has gotten me this far in my game? Should I just stop tinkering with my game as I do every off season?

Which Configuration? 4-SW or 3-PW?
Elmer replied to PJStyles's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
1 Driver 3wood 5 Wood 4 Hybrid 5i to GW 56 60 putter Who uses 3, 4 irons anymore especially when they have hybrids and 7 woods that are easy to hit. -
I dont know if this was directed at me, but it is not such a disaster as one might think. First I purchared the club at a local liquadation sale, where 12 of the local courses get together and sell off all thier surplus. I walked in to find a 60 volkey spin milled marked at $50. The one next to it was $90. I came back an hour later and inspected it, looked fine. I offered $40, the guy dropped to $45.....MINE!!!!! Anyway I use my 60 degree Volkey from 50 yards out or less. I use it to chip on the fringe and lob shots. Part of me thinks I use it too much as my 56 is getting cob webs. (I hit my 56 60 to 75 yards, but I am rarely that distance). I have been looking at going down to a 54 and taking both the 60 & 56 out of the bag. As much as I like my 60 for short shorts, I find my 56 volkey ( I paid full price to match the 60) to be not nearly as forgiving as I would like. I have a 50 Callaway Big Bertha Gap wedge that is forgiving and awesome. I might have to go try other clubs and find something that is forgiving. I hear Cleveland is forgiving.......

I have Vokey SM 56 & 60. I love the 60 degree and use it from 50 yards out and around the green. The 56 I use from 50+ yards to about 80. (it should be noted I hit the ball REALLY high and as such I lose distance) I tend not to use my 56 that often, because I am rarely 50 to 80 yards out. I am either closer or farther. So my 56 gets relegated to bunker work. For some reason, I find the 56 heavier than the 60. I also find it clunkier. I also find it less forgiving, yet it stops on a dime and checks quick (this could be from the ball coming straight down to green, like it jumped from a plane with no chute). I am going next week to invesitgate some clevelands on advice of a golf buddy who likes them. I have a callaway 50 GW, and I am looking to replace my 56 with a 54, this way my wedge set up will be 50/54/60 not 50/56/60. As much as I like the Vokey SM, they retail for $120 and as I said feels heavier and clunky. A cleveland can be purchased in my area for $80 AND just feels lighter..... I might have to switch and then make the decision about swictching back!

I went and hit a bucket of balls on wed, and spent most of it hammering my #4 22 degree taylormade hybrid. I must say I had gone to the driving range/golf shop with the intention of purchasing a new hybrid. However I was hitting my old Taylormade burner really well. I moved the ball up in my stance, just left of center and I hit it more like an iron than a sweep swing as I hit with my woods. Although one of the large problems I have always had is hitting my hybrid out of the rough, I find this club just doesnt get through the rough as well as I would hope. But for the time being I am going to have to just work with the taylormade burner and wait until the price of something more forgiving goes down!

Should a bag wear out this soon?
Elmer replied to Elmer's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
As a follow up. I contacted the company I purchased the bag from. They indicated they had been in contact with Ogio. I was asked if my straps met at a single O ring, which it did. My straps connected to the bag in 3 spots ( 2 separate O rings, 1 combined). It was then explained to me that I had been given 2 bags from a year with this design flaw. I was told the newer model was improved and the straps connected to the bag in 4 spots. Each strap connected individually. I guess Ogio knew this and accidently sent Guru golf the wrong bags. They sent me a new bag, free of shipping charge. As a matter of fact the new bag that was sent to me, is an improvement on the orginal bag. Better Zippers, better scorecard pocket. I have since walked 18 with it and no problems. Of course now I have the bag so hiked up on my bag one of the zippers is now digging into my back. But this I can take......... -
I have a 2008 Taylormade Hybrid #4 (21 degree) I find this club to be the least forgiving club in my bag. I generally hit this club 75 yards. Since I find it so unforgiving, I will opt to be short with a 5 iron or hit a 5 wood lightly. My taylormade 5 wood (3 wood as well) as so forgiving if I leave the club face open a bit I still get distance, almost 90% of normal distance. My hibrid, if I leave the face open and usually try to fade a shot (or have just hit it poorly) I get about 50 yards forward, 50 yards to the right. I am wondering it is the way I hit the club or the club itself? But mor importantly I am looking for a hybrid that has the forgiveness of my woods. I am always hear people tell me how great hybrids are! how easy they are to hit out of the rough and off the deck. I find neither to be true with this club. I get no help out of the rough and most shots with this club feel like I am hiting the ball with a 2x4. I know people speak highly of adams hybrids. So I am just putting it out there, what are some hybrids that will feel like my woods? Or could it possible that the 2008 taylormade is just a junk club?

In Search Of: Unbiased GPS reviews
Elmer replied to golfingal's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I purchased the Callaway Upro MX about a month ago. I have had no regrets. I must explain I purchased this item on Feebay for $130, when it retails for $199. What I like about the item is I pulled it out of the box charged and used. All the courses I play are on there, no loading. You only have to load and pay for the PRO mode, which includes fly overs....I dont need this. The unit has what I need. It tells me my distance to the green and I can measure my distance on any club I hit. I can use the Go mode and move my target on the green to tell me the distance of the exact hole location. This GPS also have the ability to keep stats, score, GIR etc.....but I disabled them. It did exactly what I wanted out of the box distance to front/middle/back green. Bunkers and measure club distance. I get2 18 hole rounds per charge and the charger is USB port or wall adaptor. -
If the ball lands in that 10 to 20 yard area than I think it is hitting into. if the ball drops and rolls past you on the green then that is definately hitting into. Any more than 20 yards and they might have had the wind behind them. However I have on occasion got a hold of a good one and sent it close to people. Then again if they are playing slow, I am hitting in and sending a message!

I like to play the same ball all the time. I like to have the same feel and know what the ball is going to do all the time. I used to play a titlest nxt tour, but switched to a callaway after shooting my low round with a callaway hx hot. I will play this ball for a good while until I decide to try something new. I will usually play a round with a pro-V1 or X when I find them just to try them out. If i deviate from my normal ball it is because I found one, which is the case with my last deviation for 12 holes with a Penta! (great ball)

When I go to the range I bring an egg carton of "shag" balls. These are balls that are either scuffed or just as brand I dont play. I should note that I know someone who works at a course and has found thousands of balls. This being the case If I find a ball on a course I either play it or take it to the range. The range balls here at the local golf shop or bad range balls that wont travel over 200 yards. So I usually send a good dozen of what I have in my shag pile. I think the range kid must keep them, because I write "shag" in green all over the ball and never saw one pop up in my bucket. I think hitting a good ball helps you practice more so than a ball that wont travel the true distance.

Just heard from the company who I bought the bag from. They spoke to Ogio and it was a design flaw during one of the model years. They are sending me a new one, from a different year-no charge. Hopefully this will be the last bag I use for atleast the next 5 years! -
I have been told by some of my golfing buddies, most of whom are Old timers (30 years + of playing). Always go with the shorter club at normal swing. I always approached like this: do I want to be short or long of the hole. especially if it is only a difference of 10 years. If there is more room behind the hole and it is a decent put, go with the longer club. If I want to be short and it is an uphill put go short and hit normal. All depends on what green you have to work with and where you want to put from.

I dont have any velcro on the pockets. IN fact my pockets and belt are covered by my shirt, which is not tucked on. The tearing and wear seems to be on the back left side of me and does not seem to vertical, more a horizontal pulling of the bag. Everyone I spoke to indicates Ogio makes quality product and this is rare for any bag. -

I dont regret the purchase, only that it doesnt last as long as it should. I know my bag is not counter fit, because I have spoken to OGio and they have asked me to locate specific tags on the bag. I dont know how I would be "hard" on my bag, I simply strap it on and walk 9 (or 18). I used to wear the bag a bit low, but under suggestion of others have raised the bag up a little more. I dont over pack my bags, I carry 14 clubs, a umbrella, a water bottle, 6 balls, 9 tees and occasionally a rain jacket! -
I have an ogio bag that lasted 3 months. I walk 9 holes a week from april until august. The material on the outside of a back pad frayed, then just shredded apart. The company replaced the bag last week. I took it out for 18 holes walking and after 9 noticed the same wear and tear. While it is not as bad this time around, I am sure it will shred withint my next few rounds. I cant imaging I am carrying incorrectly, I even asked some of the more seasoned golfers in my league (IE old timers) But could a company really make a bag with this much of a defect? Shouldnt I get aatleast a full season if not 5 years out of a bag? I might have to explore another company!

I know I am late to this discussion. I purchased a red Grom back in march. I am currently on my 2nd one. The first one frayed and ripped at the pipping of the bag support cushion. The internet company replaced it without a fuss, but after 18 holes the same problem developed. I like the woode top as it keeps everything organized. The bag is a bit heavy @ 7 lbs (36 fully loaded) but getting a lighter bag would only trim a few pounds. I would probably get another Ogio, just no a 2010 grom!
