Hey Im looking to upgrade my irons. I have Ben Hogans right now, which I like but there are a few things that I don't like. They have more offset than I want, for some reason I cant hit the short irons (8, 9 and PW) very well and they are wearing out really fast (they only have one season of semi-regular play in them and they are already pretty chewed up). So I'm looking into getting a new set of irons and dont want to spend more than 300 or 400 dollars. Im looking at TaylorMade r7, Wilson Staff Ci7 and Callaway X18's or X-20's. So anyone have any input? Im a good ball striker but I still want a forgiving club but I also want some feel too.

Im the total opposite. The other day I played 18 holes, shot an 88 and had 4 birdies, 6 pars, 4 bogies, 2 double bogies, 1 triple bogey and 1 +5 (8 on a par 3). Im really inconsistant, but when im on i can relatively easily drive 280 and dont have too much trouble hittin real close from 150 out. When I'm not on, Im really bad. Like the other day when i was playin a 225 yrd par 3. I topped a 3 wood, chunked a 5 iron, hit another 5 iron 25 yards over the green, bladed a wedge across into a bunker, hit onto the green, then 3 putted for an 8. I usually get my birdies from either a long putt or a bombed drive that leaves a wedge to the green. But I guess thats how most people get their birdies.

All the time. I talk more when I play by myself than I do when playing in a foursome because I'm conatantly talkin. It really funny because I rarely use profanity when talking to anyone else, but on the golf course 50% of what I say wouldn't be allowed in a PG-13 movie.

A few things that helped me out alot are things that will help with your irons in general -Make sure you are keeping your hands in front of the ball at impact -Play the ball back in your stance a little -Eliminate any wristy stuff -Have a slightly more upright swing I changed these things and I went from a sweeper to a divot taker (im not sure what you call this) But it really helped my iron game a lot

It not even really a playin slow thing, it just more of having a purpose for every shot. I still play sub 3 hr rounds by myself and sub 3:30 rounds with other people. I dont take too much time i just visualize what i want, focus all my attention on doin it, then do it. Also this makes me less likely to have the "oh sh it i hope i dont chunk this ball 10 yards" swing thought, which tends to not help things.

Amen to what everyone said about callaway having good C.S. I had a x460 driver that started rattling. I called them not thinkin they would do anything about it. Instead they sent me a Hyper x 460 with an upgraded shaft, no questions asked. It was by far the best experience i have ever had with the C.S. department of a big company. Free shipping and i had a new, upgraded driver in less than a week.

Ive been playin for about a year and have always been a better ball striker than my handicap would indicate. When people ask my handicap they always think its 5-10 ish. Up until a few weeks ago it was hovering in the 18-22 range. I didn't really know what was causing this, other than my horrible putting. So my big break through that shaved 6 or 7 strokes off of my handicap in a matter of weeks (and only 1 round a week) was focusing. I never realized how many shots I took without really paying attention. A lot of the time when I would hit a bad shot, I would step up to my next shot and just kinda swing and hope it went in the right direction. But now I make a point of having a reason and a goal for each shot. It has helped me dramatically and I would reccomend it to anyone who does not already do it. I have basically eliminated all of those chunks and bladed shots that come as a result of not focusing. Now if I could eliminate those 42 putt rounds I would be doin great.

Heres the deal. I have a 23 year old friend who has done very well in a business that he started (like drives an aston martin well). He decided hes going to take the next few years and try to go pro. Hes planning on getting daily private lessons from a very reputible teacher. Besides these lessons he plans plays/practices for 3-6 hours a day. Hes been playing golf for 5 or 6 years and is a scratch player. The biggest flaw in his game is his short game and he averages 300 yards or so on his drives. So, do you think he can do it? What chances would you give him, of making the PGA tour, how about on of the smaller tours?

This is pretty much me also. The other day I had an 86 (par 68) with 48 putts (1 5 putt 2 4 putts and 8 3 putts). I was really pissed when I drove a par 4 but 4 putted for bogey. I am seriously the worst putter ever. I regularly 3 and 4 putt, miss 2 footers and leave things ridiculously short/long. On the days where I do better with my putting I do pretty well. My best round ever was a 76 (par 69) with 36 putts.

Just curious why when Geroge Bush plays golf he's being a snobby, rich old white guy who hates all minorities, but when Obama does it's really cool?

Not to be a smart ass but a few of you have said "pinch the ball against the turf". Hasn't it been talked about over and over again that you aren't pinching the ball against the grass. It is impossible to hit the ball with the face of the club and pinch it against the grass.

60 is good 50 is gettin too cold 40 is way too cold 30 is crazy 20 is completly ridiculous thats with no wind or rain--golf is supposed to be fun and i personally have no fun wearing a bunch of layers and freezing my butt off. i played in 55 and light rain the other day and i quit after 5 or 6 holes cause it was too cold and wet
-
I think i would be better off playing the ball farther back--right now i play it close to my front foot, any farther forward and id be playing it way out in front. I get hardly any backspin at all so i think moving it back would help.
-
Hey thanks for the help. I think it might be a combination of playing the ball too far forward and scooping under it--i usually don't take a divot. Also I think my wrists are lagging behind the club. Now if only I could go out and work on it, but its 20 and snowing and windy

Ive been playing for a about a year and have been steadily getting better but am still inconsistant (this october i shot an 81 one day and a 99 the next). My problem is that I hit everything way too high. My driver goes 230-250 on a well hit ball (95 ish mph) but is really high. My 3 iron is about 180-190 but has the trajectory of a normal person's 7 iron. This is all annoying but not a big problem. My wedges are the big problem. My LW goes 30 or 40 yards but like a mile high, my sw goes 50 or 60 and a mile high and my gw is like 75 yards or so, my pw is like 80 or 90 and my 9 iron is like 100. After that my distances go up 8-130 7-145 5-155 4-170. So is it a "sweeper" problem or something else. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

What do You Think Is More Important? And Why?
Hoovedawg replied to firefighter2711's topic in Golf Talk
I think hitting the driver is the most important. Score-wise it's not but most people start playing because they want to hit a golf ball a long way. When I was starting I would take a 115 with 10 straight 265 yard drives over 105 with better putting and chipping. On those days where I sliced, hooked, topped, swung and missed, and shanked my driver shots I felt like quitting, and came close to it. Finally I got my driving down and I got really into golf. What finally got me way into golf was last fall I was playing with a slight tail wind and downhill, I jacked one 350 yards (honestly). I outdrove everyone in my group by 100+ yards (They stopped right at the top of the hill). Even though I went on to bogey that hole, it was one of the coolest feelings ever. Once you get interested in golf then worry about lowering your score with putting and chipping. But, overall as a beginner you need to have fun and I think hitting the ball a long way is the most fun. -
People talk about the problems with golf and most of the time people mention pace of play, how expensive it is and other things of this sort. I think that the real problem is a small percentage of people playing it. These people are responsible for other people to think that it is "old rich and snobby" sport. Some of you all are like this but most are not. These are the people that disrespect someone because he isn't wearing dressed up enough or because they have 30 year old clone clubs. These are the people that can't stand to see a kid on the course and will get mad at or disrespect the juinor golfers just because they are younger. These are the people who freak out about rules and ettiquete. (I'm not saying dont follow the rules, I'm talking about the people that get mad other people in other groups fluffing their ball or taking gimmie putts. As for the ettiquete I'm not saying that people should talk in someone's backswing or walk in someone's line but if someone makes an honest mistake you don't need to be a dbag about it.) These are the one who tee off with a group 150 yards out. They just need to chill out realize that golf is not a race and the world doesnt revolve around them. These are the people hurting golf.

Im 17 and played baseball for 12 years or so, so my swing is sort of baseball ish. I swing 95-100 but on a big wide open fairway can crank it up to 110. My swing is pretty solid, minus whatever is causing my fade/ slice. I know I have the ability to bomb one 280-300 because I usually get one or two per round, and the rest are stupid slices or on a good day fades that only go 200-240. Srry about the clone, I got a good deal on it and hit it as well as the nike one. Please forgive me

Ok so heres the deal. 1 is what I am now with my 9.5 degree TM Burner 420 2 is what i am with a "Quick Draw" Steel Shaft Steel head driver that I got at goodwill for $2.38 3 is what I am with my square sv3 3 wood I'm thinking of dropping my Burner for the "Quick Draw" driver which costs me distance, but I can hit it pretty straight with a little fade or draw sometimes. Would this be a good change. If you were in my position would you do it?
-
One thing I forgot was that all of these options come with the typical tops skyed, etc shot of a 15 ish handicap. Not that that really changes anything because its that same for all of them.
-
My bad about not having the poll i didnt think of it when i wrote this.
-
If someone said you had to pick one of these three options for your driving, which would you pick. Distances are carry+roll. 1) Usually 240-260 yards relativley controled fade that can turn into a slice some days. Occasionally 280-300 yard bomb when you catch one right. Moderatly high ball flight. 2) 225-235 yards straight with occasional slight fade or draw under 10 yards either way. Rarely hit over 245. Low to medium ball flight. 3) 200-220 yards almost always straight but sometimes pushed or pulled. Occasionally over 240 but not often. Very high ball flight. So which would you all pick. I explain this further after i see which option you all pick.

The Pw is 2 degrees of bounce. The 10 iron is 0. The 56 is 14 and the LW is 8. I mainly use the LW for bunkers because where I play the bunkers are all hard and relativly close to the hole.

I was just thinking about how weird my wedge set up in my bag is 46 degree PW (Ben Hogan BH-5) 48 degree 10 Iron (MacGregor Tournament Custom)-Goodwill Special $2.38 56 degree SW (Royal Regal)-Goodwill Special $2.38 60 degree LW (Aspire Tour Wedge)-Walmart Special $19.99 The thing is that I basically use the 10 iron for everything 50 yards and in (Pitches, Chips, flops). I rarely use the pitching wedge, maybe 1 or 2 times a round. The Lob wedge I use in the sand traps but this is usually only 1 or 2 times a round. The sand wedge I haven't touched in the last 4 rounds that I have played. So is it a bad thing that I use the 10 iron 15+ times per round and the others combined maybe 2 or 3 times per round? Will this hurt my game as I get better?
