I never really concluded golf instruction couldn't be beneficial. It's just that I you can get equal results for 1/10 of the price, people and going to go in that direction. Thereby answering the query in the title of the thread as to why most folks don't take any lessons. Well if knew people were going to fly off of the handle due to a little overly strong wording to the end of an otherwise legitimate post i might have revised it. I spend a whole lot more time on one of the more popular tennis forums were a post such as my original would hardly stand out amongst those who have truly mastered the art of the troll post. Most of the folks on TT just have fun with it alongside of the more serious discussion. And who knows, someone might have identified with my plight had my intentions not been questioned so early. Its not like I never had a lesson before. After having gotten my game to a pretty good level on my own I did take a series of lessons at one of the nicer clubs in my area. It took me a little to long to notice that the instuctor really wasn't trying to work with my swing but instead try and make me into some sort of Adam Scott look alike. screwed up my game for a while before i could swap out the new moves that really weren't compatible with my swing style.

I would normally retaliate harshly but I can see you yourself are an instructor and clearly have a lot more vested interested in this argument than I do. I don't mean to try and take away your livelihood I just don't see how else the game is going to be able to grow with such prohibitive costs to become a half decent golfer. It's more efficient to teach people to teach themselves.

People who can't discern between good or bad writings on golf won't be able to discern between good or bad instructors either.

Perhaps it was a bit of a troll post but I just hate to see people wasting their money. Books just provide so much more information per dollar. And a great book is a lot easier to find than a great instructor.

I don't think talent is largely relevant to this topic. An instructor isn't going to be able to overcome poor coordination any more than a book can. Books are a lot more patient with those kind of folks.

I could never justify spending $100/hr on private lessons with so much cheap/free instruction out there. Between Hogan and Pelz's Books and online stuff I've found I managed to shoot in 70's rather quickly. Lessons are for people with money or poor reading comprehension.

The show wastes so much time with the annoucers trying to build the suspense, it's ridiculously slow. If you watched it for an hour you would only see each player hit two golf shots. With so little time spent actually testing their skills there is no way they could pick the best of the bunch. Give me more golf.

Definately Utley. My stroke is like Bobby Locke's, well inside and rounded with a closed face. I don't know why, but the ball comes off the sweetest when I putt that way.

If you don't conciously think about your're wrist action it should be fine. Otherwise, you will be to handsy or stiff.

I play mostly in college tournaments. They would be a lot more fun if it didn't take six hours to play one round. Any of you guys have slow play problems?

range mats a very forgiving and will produce a dececent ball flight if you scoop it or hit way behind the ball. That's why a lot of people think they hit it better on the range(plus they usually don't aim at a target). Although I guess it is better than nothing. Hit off of grass whenever you've got the oppurtunity

I tee the ball so that the center of the ball is a half inch below the top of the clubface. This makes it is impossible to pop up the ball. And if I swing properly I hit the ball in the center of the clubface instead of above it like some people suggest.

I've heard a lot about tour pros talk about getting pumped up during the final stretch of a tournament. They say sometimes it cause them to hit there irons 3 clubs longer than normal. Have any of you experienced similar phenomena?

She is most definately a cheater. I remember playing in high school there was one kid from another school who claimed to have mutiple holes in one. Some he said were on certain par 4's that I am very well acquainted with. I played with him in a match and I outdrove him consistently by 30 yards and I couldn't reach the par 4's he had claimed to ace. His own teammates didn't believe him. Some people are just looking to get attention.

A 3-iron hyrid probably has 20-23 degrees of loft. That is not enough to hit out rough. All you could do is pop the ball over a foot or two of fringe. Unless the fringe at your home course is extra long you might as well putt it.

I Know what GIR is. I meant how many feet from the cup would I be. You could hit every green in regulation and have all 70 foot putts which wouldn't be good for scoring.

Unless there is snow on the ground I'm going to be out there playing. When It gets real cold make sure to let your clubs adjust to the temperature. Once I saw a guy crack the head a driver he was demoing. It only lasted five shots

When you play match play do you use any gamesmanship? I personally love to get into my opponents head. Some of my favorites are 1. On short par 4s let you opponent outdrive you to get on the green first. 2.walking fast and getting to your ball early an impatiently look at them when they're away 3.be generous giving putts early then make them hole out on the final holes 4.If your opponent slices his drive say something like ''get left'' even though you obviously don't mean it. Question 2 On a par five your opponent is down 2 and puts his second shot in a water hazard guarding the green. You can get there in two with a decent five wood. Do you go for it or lay up?

When you say hit every green in regulation what sort of proximity to the hole are we talking about?

I personally love the look. I'm sure you can make a good buck selling them. Especially if you can get somebody like Ian Poulter to use one.
