Should I reshaft my 4 wood?
JaxBomber17 replied to JaxBomber17's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I think that's a great answer, and i'm leaning towards leaving it alone now. No reason to change something that works, and definitely no reason to spend the first part of the season learning two new clubs. -
I thought it was 44", but just measured it at 42". I just picked up my new driver and it's 47". I feel so much better swinging the extra 2" on my driver, but my 4 wood is a really comfortable club for me off the tee on medium par 4s and on par 5s. Tour Edge Exotics CB4 tour 16.5 with an Aldila RIP x-stiff shaft. Should I stick with what works or try to see what a new shaft can do? I'm 6'7" with shorter arms so I feel like that could actually improve my consistency, but if I'm spraying my driver it's a real security blanket for me as-is.

Agreed. I've tried to be subtle about it; maybe I need to just yell "HIT THE DAMN BALL" once. If nothing else it will make me feel 100% better. Any time I ever throw out a "guys, we're dragging" I always get an "it doesn't feel like we're playing that slow" back. To me, it feels like watching syrup run uphill, but...
I'd have to guess. 1) Not playing ready golf 2) Taking too long per shot 3) Everyone searching for one lost ball instead of going ahead and hitting your own ball. 4) Hit provisional shots more often. #1 cause of slow play is not playing ready golf. If you use a cart, drop someone off, go to your ball, then go pick them back up. Don't congregate around one ball and watch that person hit. If you don't play golf well, don't copy PGA Tour players and their routines. The number of practice swings isn't going to help you out. You don't need to be going through your routine on that 2 FT putt when you already taken 8 strokes to get there. It's OK to just pick up and move on. Play more match play so that holes can be conceded more often. 4 people don't need to go search for a lost ball. Go hit your shots, then go over and help if they haven't found it yet. Be aware of the 5 minute limit as well.

I play with my wife quite a bit, and she's really slow, on Saturday I shot 100, she shot 136, and we still finished in 4 hours with another couple we were paired with. We even let a couple groups through. We didn't really play ready golf, I hear this a lot but I'm still not sure why it takes some people 5+ hours? I've hit traffic jams at the tee before that have caused it to take that long, or an extended food/bathroom break at the turn that can eat up a bunch of time, but how many practice swings does it take to extend a game an hour?
These guys do not, in any way, shape, or form, play ready golf. I was generally longest off the tee, but by the turn I was hitting first because our shortknocker has this intricate pre-shot routine that involves 30-60 seconds of sitting in the cart thinking REALLY hard about his yardage or something. Honestly, no one thing the two of them do ever seems to take up THAT much time, but eight or nine little things per hole add up fast. Things like not even pulling a club until the other two have already hit their tee shots, taking ALL OF THE TIME to line up that putt for triple, not even starting to line up the putt until it's your turn to putt, etc. I guess I don't notice it as much when we play scrambles because everyone has the same yardage and you can get break from each oher's putts, but it makes me want to manually strangle someone when we're playing a normal round.

In a threesome. Everyone broke 100. Two of us broke 85. Our only wait was five minutes on the first tee. I ended up with an 83 (best score of the year) that EASILY should have been an 80 or better. I was playing with two good friends, probably my most frequent partners. We play a lot of scrambles with a fourth guy and usually do very well. But I definitely remembered why I haven't gone for a stroke-play round with these guys in a few years. The best part was after we let the second group play through on 14 or 15, and a third was immediately bumping up against us, one of the guys looks at me and says "See, that's what happens when you let one group play through." It took a LOT of self control not to say, "No, that's what happens when you're the slowest group on the course." We teed off a little after 1, and by the time we made the turn at 3:40, I was pulling my hair out. It isn't that I had better places to be; I just can't focus like I should when I'm worried about the foursomes stacking up behind us with nothing but wide-open spaces up ahead. My game definitely felt the fallout as I started pushing my irons further right the more I rushed to make up for one guy never even pulling a club until the other two had already hit, and the other taking a solid minute to line up every single putt. Just an all-around frustrating day, and it really shouldn't have been. It was my first time out in a while after a few months of nothing but range and backyard work that has really paid off. These guys aren't casual players, either. We all count all our strokes, talk golf constantly, and, other than pace of play, know the rules of etiquette. I need to either find a way to get these guys moving a little quicker or just find some new playing partners before I say something I shouldn't.

I played a course with 8-minute intervals and a full sheet yesterday and it wasn't awful. Finished 18 in just over 4, albeit with a twosome in front of us, and that was with a very new player with us. We only lost the twosome once, on 15. Picked them back up on 17 tee. That didn't stop the four little old ladies behind us (who were in four separate carts and at times hitting simultaneously) from hitting into us four times.

Which ball for an 11 handicapper?
JaxBomber17 replied to ttaggart's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I read through that last night. I was thinking about e5s as well. I currently play Pro Vs because I like the ball flight and how easy it is to control roll on chip shots, but I rarely buy them new. I used to play the PD Softs from Nike, but I've found that low compression balls tend to balloon on me. No idea of the compression level of the e5. Need to do some research. but to answer your question, I use GD's equipment ratings as a guideline by which I can do my own research. I've seen them publish too many conflicting reviews. -
At 6'7", my main problem is few retailers sell anything with an inseam longer than 34, and I need at least a 36. I also would love for someone to stock a shirt that has the fit of an XL with the length if a 2XL. I can usually find clothes that cover me, but they don't fit well lol. I also agree with neophyte up there...just making the waist bigger on pants doesnt help. I wear a 36 waist, but I still have thigh muscles left over from my pitching days, and it's tough to squat on the greens or even sit comfortably in most slacks, and even some shorts. I play with a former classmate who was a soccer player, and he has a similar priblem, especially as he needs an even smaller waist size. Thanks for the thread! If I could start ordering reliably from one company, I'd be psyched.

One of my best friends is just getting into the game and has asked me to help him out. I took him to Play it Again and we found a used set of Louisville Slugger TPX irons and wedges with a 3 hybrid and a 3 wood, and an older Cleveland driver. He has a great attitude about it and is decently athletic, but of course has struggled out of the gate. Yesterday I just wanted to be sure his grip was right and he was hitting ball-first. I told him that swing mechanics are important, but all he needs to think about is ball-first impact with a square clubface. He seems to be enjoying it a lot more this time around, and even legitimately parred the most difficult par-3 on the course. I gave him a bunch of my old Golf Digests to leaf through for stuff to work on between rounds and we're going to try to play a round at least once a week, with range time at our alma mater's facility in between. What tips, if any, do you guys have for keeping frustration to a minimum and effectively giving tips during a round? My main concern is that I don't want to overload him with info. I told him I'm just going to try to give him one thing to think about every time we play, but nothing that seriously changes his swing until we're on the range. He tried to pick it up a year ago, but a mutual friend of ours (great guy, but one of those 40-cappers who thinks he's Hank Haney) threw so much info at him before, during, and after every swing that he got frustrated and went back to disc golf. Also, what's a good way to help him eliminate his slice? It frustrated the hell out of me when I first started, and he has a pretty bad one.

Love watching Tiger, Phil, Ian, and Luke, but my favorite golfer is by far Keegan Bradley. At the Wednesday practice round at the Masters last year, he pulled his drive on 17 left. He put a second drive in the fairway, and sent his caddy over to pick the first one up, but my buddy and I needled him a bit, so he came over and decided to play the first one. Off some pretty trampled-down turf, he got his 8-iron up so fast it looked like a sand wedge, over a stand of trees, to just left of the green. It was a pretty cool moment, and I've been a big fan ever since.

Gamers (Video that is), are you going to buy TW14 "Legends"
JaxBomber17 replied to Valleygolfer's topic in Golf Talk
I'm still playing '12, the Masters. The DLC pissed me off, though. All the old fantasy courses like the Predator and Greek Isles were extra, and you couldn't even play some of the season events without downloading them. No coins, either-had to pay for them I believe. Still, I'm loving it still. Wouldn't mind starting over with a new player, though. -
4 iron. 220-230 yard draw off the tee makes it great for finding the 150 marker on short par 4s, and on the odd 210-220 yard fairway shot it gives me a nice, high cut that sits down better than you'd think. I don't know what it is, but I feel ridiculously comfortable with that club in my hands. You'd probably have to go all the way to my 9 iron to find a club I feel that confident about hitting.

Enjoyed the teaser, I definitely want to know when it's out for kindle.

Debuted my new swing today. I've flattened it out a lot, and it's allowed me to get the ball a good bit higher and helped my accuracy as well. I was even through five holes (five pars) when the bottom fell out of the clouds. Radar in the clubhouse showed that it wasn't going to clear up, so we left. It had been a long time since I was hitting the ball that well from tee to green (4/5 FIR and 3/5 GIR, but most importantly zero chunked iron shots). No idea when I'll get back out, but I felt robbed today.
