I have recently got fitted professionally for my next set of clubs. In that fitting I learned allot about what they can all adjust for an individual person. The more I delve into theories, and the science of the golf swing, ball flight and such the more interesting I find the sport. It also helps me to understand why certain swing adjustments produce certain outcomes. This is why I am a strong supporter of every golfer that is planning to continue golf getting a proper club fitting. I think a major misconception of clubfitting is that it is reserved for professional golfers and that it is expensive. And a fitting can cost approx $300 for a full fitting from what I have seen from professional club makers. As well as often the fitting is free if you purchase a set of clubs. Anyway I don't want to go into every little aspect of my opinion because that would take a long time. I would love to hear peoples opinions about clubfitting for all skill levels of golfers. I believe that once a person can produce a relatively consistent swing they are ready. Mitch

I would love to offer my limited experience, These clubs could hit different for you because of the obvious that they are different clubs, but different shaft flex and lengths, lofts and lies may also attribute to this. In my opinion you have to go with the golf clubs that feel great to hit as well as provide the desired results. I have noticed one of the ways to do this is get a professional fitting from a clubmaker. They are somewhat more thorough than some of the larger golf outlets. This is not to say that they do not provide the equivalent service, but in my experience they have only given a partial fitting. I believe fittings very important for every level of golfer. There is a major misconception that a professional fitting is only for good golfers. This is extremely important to ensure shaft length, shaft flex, club lofts and lies are all measured to the individual because all our swings are unique. Two of the things I have found to be more in depth. - Golf shafts come over length of course to provide the possibility of different sizes as would be measured for each individual. They are generally marked regular flex, stiff flex, extra stiff flex and so on. The way it was explained to me is that each shaft can be somewhat different from the next do to extremely slight differences that can not be prevented. Some major outlets will measure, cut, and mount the shafts and the flex can range slightly within your selected flex range. A qualified clubmaker has tools to measure the flex on an individual shaft and after watching your swing and calculating what the proper flex for you is, they can measure a shaft and the specific spot to cut it on both ends to provide an equal flex throughout your entire set. - Aligning the spine of your club shaft. Also due to slight deviations in each individual shaft it will flex easier along a specific axis. if this axis is not aligned with your swing, then when the shaft flexes on your backswing it has the possibility to deviate from one side or the other causing a higher possibility of a miss hit. I hope this is a clear explanation. Anyway. To prevent making this post far too long I will stop it here. And if anyone has any questions or wants to discuss this further feel free to pm me. Mitch G

Golf is actually pretty good up here. We have 3 courses up here and one more on the way. Quarry Ridge - A par 3 course. Not bad, but has not been established so the grounds are pretty hard. It can be fun for a quick and cheap round of course. Miskinaw Golf Club - Has been a great golf club. Relatively established with a great greenskeeper. It has been undergoing some renovations lately so it has had a couple detours and temporary greens. The renovations they have made have been great though. They have some beautiful new holes along the river and some great scenic areas. Fort McMurray Golf Club - Is the more difficult course in Fort McMurray and the most established. It has some amazing views along another area of the river and some gentle elevation changes. It is also home to the Boreal Open. This is definitely the favoured course in Fort McMurray although tee times fill up really quick. We have a new golf club that is being built, I believe it will be called Rotary Golf Club. I don't think it will be open for a couple more years. If your ever heading up let me know. I imagine Toronto has quite a few nice courses. Mitch

Where did you hear about Miura?
Rednax1530 replied to Rednax1530's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thats interesting. I ended up learning about Miura from google haha. Once I was in the market for new clubs I decided to start researching different brands & learning the differences between club styles and makes. Forged vs Cast. Blade vs Cavity and so on. Finally I went to a couple different club fitters to try different brands out and fell in love with Miura. I mainly tried the Miura Passing Point and Tournament blades. Both very nice clubs and I was torn. I was actually hitting the Tournament blades pretty good. Then the Limited Black Blades became available and that made my mind up for me. And for those of you who aren't familiar with the Black Blades, its the same as the Miura Tournament Blades with a different finish. -
Miura seems to be almost a hidden secret to some people. I have personally talked to lots of people including some very experienced golfers who have never heard of Miura before. So I would love to hear where people heard about Miura? And what made you decide to try or go with Miura clubs in your bag?
-
Its interesting to hear what people do for scoring with the temporary greens. My home course is undergoing some major renovations. Some of the areas were in pretty rough shape last year and we had a couple temporary greens which are never quite as nice. I like the 6ft rule Iacas, although for myself I might have to make that area smaller. maybe 3 or 4 ft until I become a more experienced golfer. And of course only on the temporary greens.

Should Rule 4.4 (Maximum of 14 clubs) be altered?
Rednax1530 replied to Patrick57's topic in Rules of Golf
To change the 14 club limit rule or not? Well I am by no means an incredible golfer, and as I have read through some of the other posts here it really made me realize a couple really good points others have made. 1. If your just golfing for fun and enjoy playing with more than 14 clubs feel free. - There is not official rule to limit the amount of clubs you can carry on a course for recreation.. - It does not hurt anyone if someone carries more than 14 clubs away from competition. 2. To carry less clubs may make you a better golfer. - I dont have specific experience with this, but it makes sense that you would learn to work your clubs more, therefore making you a better golfer. - Carrying more clubs for beginner golfers may make learning your distances more difficult. So in my opinion they should leave the rule at 14, and away from tournament a player can practice with less or play with more as they seem fit. The better question in my opinion is what does the individual want to get out of the game? I like the idea of playing with 5 - 7 clubs total as practice. I think it will help me to learn my specific clubs, work on accuracy, and adjusting my distances with different shots. I will be trying this more in the coming season! Mitch -
I currently have a couple basic goals. 1. Get to the point where I am hitting under 90 consistently. 2. Become more accurate, keep the balls on the fairway more. (been fitted properly. Won't fix it but might help) 3. Get my wife out golfing more. 4. Get out practicing at the range, putting greens and bunkers more often, as well as play more rounds (total of 3 - 4 times a week)
-
For myself, my wife has been golfing a couple times. She enjoyes it and was going to do more golfing this year but now were having another kid so maybe by the end of the summer she will come out. My biggest thing is that I can't help teach her golf. For one I dont have the patience to instruct her. And second I'm not qualified to teach her to play properly. I would most likely teach her bad habbits so I think some lessons and lots of time at the driving range will be required. Some of my friends have tried to get their wives into golf, but they are more interested in driving the cart than actual golfing. I think this is fine too, especially if we all go out together. Wives hang out and chat. And the guys can golf more often! haha Mitch
-
Who likes to take their wives golfing? Who uses it as time to relax and spend some guy time? Or do you want your wife to come but she's not interested in golf?
-
Fair enough, everyone has to have their own preference of course! Mitch
-
In my opinion I would say that Miura makes some of the most attractive Irons.
-
Well I do all three. 1. Carry - I just changed out my bag from a cart bag to a stand bag. So I am planning on walking for the most part this year. Unless I'm at a course that requires a cart. 2. Push Cart - If I am tired, or planning on taking some extra clubs. I also have kept my old cart bag so if I have a friend without clubs coming he can use that bag and the cart. 3. Riding Cart - Of course if I am playing with some friends of mine who all want to ride and I'm the only one thats gonna carry then sometimes I might just ride along. A large part of golf of course for me is the social aspect. And then there are those courses that require carts of course. Mitch

What ball will suit me???
Rednax1530 replied to Rednax1530's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Thats a pretty cool program. I think it would be good at least to give you an idea of the balls you should try out anyway! Thanks for that link! Mitch -
Well my coming set of clubs are the Miura Limited Black Blades. Although I am not a great player I tried the equivalents out in a fitting and found them to be phenomenal, as well as Miuras Passing Point irons. I do admit that was swayed by the beauty and fact that they are Limited edition. But I found hitting those irons to be amazing compared to what I was hitting before which were really low end clubs. Good for starting don't get me wrong. Wilson Prostaff. I decided to buy something that will last me for a long time, although eventually I'm sure another fitting, new shafts and more often new grips will be required. And I decided to go with blades because while hitting, although they will not be as forgiving, even in the fitting I could tell when I was hitting too much on the toe or heel of the club. I never understood before what people were talking about the feel of a club. Anyway I think I have rambled on long enough, and welcome any tips or constructive criticism anyone has to offer. Mitch

Rednax1530 replied to Rednax1530's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Thans mvmac, these are the kinda things that I need to know! Is the ProV1X a higher compression ball? Therefore requiring a higher swing speed to become more effective? I will have to check out the Bridgestone Tour B330 RX balls.. I have read them recommended a couple times now. Mitch -
Played a simulator on the weekend Haha, unfortunately my home course is still closed due to snow at least for the next couple weeks. Hit a 79 on the simulator which is being pretty forgiving seeing as I usually hit 90 - 95. At least I got out swinging! Mitch

About myself. I have been golfing on and off for the last 4 years. At the end of last year I got out a bit more and started to really realize how much I enjoy being out on the course and golfing in general. So now I have decided to start playing golf a bit more consistently, paying more attention to the finer points. I have gotten a new set of clubs professionally fit, and I never realized how many things can be adjusted on a golf club to suit an individual! Quite impressive. So since I am getting equipment and have been researching practice drills, and reading up about the science of ball flight, club loft, lie and so on. I would like to figure out which ball best suits my style of play. Now from reading I would like something that has some spin and feel for around the greens as well as for putting. Distance from my drives is important, but from my understanding most balls out now are relatively competitive. My club head speed with a driver is approx. 97 - 98 mph and with a 6 Iron about 86 - 87 mph. I tend to pull the ball slightly with a bit of a fade that can progress into a slice if I get sloppy. (bad habit of swinging from outside to inside across the ball) So now I am putting together a list of different balls I can take out for practice to get the appropriate feel. So far in my list: - Titleist ProV1x - Titleist ProV1 (although I have heard they are extremely high spin) - Taylormade Penta (being a 5 layer ball they sound really good) - Callaway HX tour Does anyone know of some balls that I should definitely try? Sorry about dragging this on so long, and if anyone has any questions I would be more than happy to answer anything I am capable of! Mitch

What do you consider to be the best online golf stat tracker? I've never really tracked my stats much past the end of the round, but as I become more serious about golf, I would like to track a lot more... Mitch

Right on, let me know what you end up going with! Love to hear about new equipment and how it works out! I just recieved the Ogio Mammoth travel bag yesterday and unboxed it! Been working so I havent had much time to go through it! Will probably post a review on that sometime! Mitch
-
I agree with Yukari, there are so many good lightweight stand bags out there. I recently purchased the Ogio Grom XX which weighs 7lbs without equipment and it is by no means the lightest bag out there. It has a 14 slot diamond club organizing system and plenty of features for accessories and such. Ping and Nike also make some great stand bags. Some of them as low as 4 or 5 lbs and will also easily fit 14 clubs. Of course the more features you would like added onto the bag the more costly and weight you will add. Another option you may want to pursue is a pull cart. Not the cheapest option, but it will definitely fit your current staff bag. They make them so they fold down so small now they are easily transported, as well as some nice features such as umbrella holders for some shade, drink holders and so on. I hope this helps! Mitch

Ya, pretty similar for me here. Not looking quite as warm as 14 in the near forecast. But our highs for the next two weeks are supposed to be hanging around 7 or 8 degrees.. And to add to the excitement I just got my new Ogio Mammoth travel bag today! Gotta love new equipment!

Have you bought new clubs for 2012?
Rednax1530 replied to Spyder's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
If you have a fast swing speed you should check out the KZG PTI or KZG Q drivers.. They are phenomenal drivers! -
Well I just joined this sight so I can see, learn and share more about golf. I live in FortMcMurray Alberta and just bought some new equipment. Can't wait for the courses to open! Can't happen soon enough!
