  1. I would suggest checking local pro shops for used club sets. Most place will cut shafts down to fit for the cost of the replacement grips only...so $50-70 on top of the club cost gets you fitted. Getting a complete club set from Wilson, Affinity, or Dunlop that has a bag with all the club types already included is a pretty good idea for a starter. Those can be cut too, all together you get a bag with a complete club set for under $350 cut to height...you can't beat that deal.
  2. I find I get the furthest drives from relaxing my wrists and arms, and getting a good coil/uncoil in the swing. If I catch a good one in the center of the club when everything comes together I can get some great distance.
  3. Some great advice. I've started to realize this recently and have had great increases in accuracy because of it. I've gathered much more power trying to time my hip turn and letting the club follow instead of trying to power through with my shoulder and arms. I added about 10-15 yards to my irons on each club from that alone. I let my arms and club follow naturally and my hip turn supplies the power.
  4. I'm a fan of the Bridgestone e6+ and the Top-Flite Gamer of Soft (kinda the same ball). I've also used the Titleist NXT Tour and I would go out and play any one of the three. I tried the Srixon AD333 but it was a little too hard for my liking.
  5. Mine is tempo, mainly having a nice backswing turned into a rushed downswing...which causes me to either push the ball or chunk the shot. I have to remind myself that the anything outside of my solid, natural swing speed isn't worth the little bit of extra distance. There's always a lower club.
  6. I'm leaning towards mental here. Puttin had been one of my strong suits prior to this year. My last two or three rounds have proven otherwise. I think I just need to go out and practive a few times this week and end on a good day. I was thinking about getting a new putter this summer. Maybe I should do it sooner...
  7. I need a little help here... I went out and decided to count my strokes to the green, then record my final score to see the number of putts I need in a round. I finished with a 97, but I putted 25 times on the front 9. I didn't record the back but I had nothing but 2 and 3 putts. The worst is that I had 15 foot birdie putt on a par 4, and I 4-putted. I need tips bad. My score could get respectable if I could putt right now.
  8. I've been doing this for a while now...kinda came upon it randomly at the range one day. It helps promote inside out swinging too.
  9. Yeah, keep your head down and quit trying to lift the ball with your arms and shoulders. Swing through, those clubs have plenty of loft to get the ball in the air on a normal swing.
  10. Well, if anyone read it I had a post last week about how awful I did my first time out this year. I either chunked or pushed every shot I took. Well, I went out today and I corrected everything. It was fantastic. I made 3 simple changes and everything clicked. 1 - On my takeaway I started to let my clubhead turn up sooner which created less tension in my wrists and forearms. Part of that was just from a better grip. 2 - I stood just a little further away from the ball and allowed a little more bend in my waist. 3 - This is the only thing I had to concentrate on really. I made sure my arms felt loose before I started my forward swing so I didn't force the club into a plane. Letting my arms relax sooner allowed them to actually set themselves where they should be naturally leading the club through the impact zone as it should. I noticed more consistent ball flight, better spin, and much better chipping as well. My contact felt solid and I actually had a good idea of where the ball would land. All it took was a little work, just stopping to think between shots on what felt right and what seemed forced...
  11. Yeah, very true. It hurts when you're playing with a guy that shoots 3 over...
  12. I hope that's it. It would make things much simpler...
  13. I went out yesterday for the first time this year, though I've been swinging year round thanks to heated ranges and indoor sims. I ran into a huge problem on the course that I could not figure out. My ball contact was horrible. I was fat on long irons, and almost every close chip or pitch shot I took ended up skipping across the green. My driving was decent, but my hybrid 3, usually my best club, was wildly inconsistent. I'd drill one straight 220+, then hit a low screaming slice, then I'd hit a floating slice. It seems like all the work I did in the off-season has netted me 0 results. I think my biggest thing is getting consistent ball striking again. I had no idea what type of flight or distance I could expect out of any of my clubs because my contact sucked.
  14. Comment for each: Some golf sims are accurate and some are not. The indoor golf academy has been very accurate for me, even through the simulated courses. I find the sims inside stores to be close to useless. Also, those Slazenger guys are having the opposite affect...I've never used those balls, but now there's no way I would. And since when does a raw meat slushie turn into a 12-pack of golf balls? What is that 220? F--- you.
  15. Get measured again. You really need to get both the shaft length and the lie correct when getting clubs fitted. I don't really think you can get the correct lie without the correct shaft length, because you'd have to compensate with your stance to get the club to sit right. If you're pulling the driver, but nothing left, you're probably either putting the ball too far forward or holding your wrists too long instead of allowing them to break naturally...or who knows...could be both.
  16. I was about to add the same thing. Somtimes if I need the loft, I'll play mine a bit forward but then play it another inch or 1.5 inches out away from my body so I have to reach a bit. The problem is that your wrists are used to turning over at a certain point in that club length, and you play forward so your timing is off. Ball position should take care of everything.
  17. I second that. I think Harvey got it right. I think of my shot, take my practice swings, setup my aiming point, and look at the ball as a whole. Then I go through my swing and follow through it.
  18. I could care less about clone clubs, as long as they're not blatant rip-off's. I used them, I switched and gained about 15 yards per club, but I wouldn't hold it against anyone to get them. I've seen guys out at the range by my house with over $1000 in their bag that can't swing a club well to save their lives. On the other than I've taken clone clubs from hitting in the low 100's to the mid 80's. I have my Wilson set now, and I wish I would have switched earlier, but I wouldn't fault someone for getting a decent set of clones (not the mis-spelled brand crap.) Oh, and I use iron covers. I didn't start out doing it, but I got into them when I would drive out of town to play just to cut down on the clatter. Now I use them regularly.
  19. I worked on this at the range yesterday and one thing I noticed is that ball position makes even more of a difference in flight with good lag. But, the height of the shot with the same club made less of a difference on the distance before landing. The roll after the carry was impacted the most by ball position.
  20. I got my Wilson Staff Pi5 set yesterday. $107 with tax. It's hard to classify clubs becomes some marks are purely superficial. That's the way these are. The faces on each club show some scratching ball marks, but nothing is pushed in or dented. It's normal wear like bag chatter. You can tell these clubs have spent some time in a car without head covers. It looks like very few of the marks on the clubs came from actual use. Each grip is original Wilson in great shape, barely any wear. The same goes for the shafts, small signs of use but no major marks or wear there either. They're clean, but if there's a good way to polish the heads I bet they'd look much closer to new. I'll stick with my original though as 8/10. The usability is like new, but they're not as pretty as new clubs. Still, I could not have come across a better set for this kind of money by any stretch... I'm going to play an indoor round on a simulator either tomorrow or Friday and I'll post a review at that point.
  21. I've been using one for the last 6 months or so as you can see from my signature. I demo'ed 4 other drivers at the time I made my decision to get it. The closest one for me was a Cobra model I can't remember. I demo'ed a Titleist, Sumo, and FT-1 on top of that...though the Mizuno drivers tend to be hit or miss with people.
  22. I'm going for K.J. Choi. I've seen him make some dynamite shots recently.
  23. I'm 6'2" and I get + 1/2 inch. Most places you go to can do up to +2 inches on standard shafts. I would get measured, and just find a decent set to order off of Golfsmith.com. Then take the clubs in somewhere local to get assembled.
  24. I called, they're holding it for me until tomorrow after work, they're mine.
