Shot of the year alert. Let me set the scene. 300 yd par 4. Back right pin location. No wind. Hit a high fade over a tree and managed to stick the shot within 2 feet. I do have to thank the shower the course received about 30 minutes earlier. Without that, the shot may have hit and sailed into the nearby parking lot. I actually managed to make the eagle putt as well. Not the most conventional eagle, but I'll take it.

I didn't have time to hit the range before my round today. I used the first 9 to warm up a bit and the back to keep score. I ended the day with a solid even par 36. A few birdies were left out on the course. Missed a 6 footer and rimmed out a 25 footer. Overall, a pretty good day on the course.

If I remember right, it was around a 110. It was the best looking 110 you will ever see. I'm just kidding it was awful. I lost track of my score on some holes.

I haven't been practicing my 3 wood for no reason. Put it on the green. Laying up is for professionals. End of story.

How many of you "fluff" your ball or play 6"/winter rules all the time?
jmorg19 replied to formula428's topic in Golf Talk
When I play on a $20 course, I absolutely play with a ground under repair mentality. If it is sitting on a spot of rock hard clay, I move it off of it. I don't think damaging a club is worth it. I never really fluff the ball. I do better with it sitting down than up. -
Wedges: Why do so many bag a 52*, 56*, 60*?

Does anyone have any popcorn? I'm enjoying this exchange. -
If the word snazzy was still in style, it would describe the awesome that are these shoes

"Off-brand" or Major Brand Irons
jmorg19 replied to jmorg19's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'll be darned. I never really noticed the resemblance I guess. Callaway just needs the beautiful copper color. Thank you for that info. I'm sure there won't be a problem, but just in case. -
"Off-brand" or Major Brand Irons

If you click on the link I posted, you will see if you break or lose a club that ordering a new club built the exact same way for under $40. In fact, this is a reason to buy the off-brand just for the availability of a replacement. I don't like swinging somebody else's clubs. I like my clubs built for me. Not Johnny 2-bit that liked clubs 3" short and a lie angle of a putter. -
"Off-brand" or Major Brand Irons

If they are half as pretty as that picture shows them, I may just order 2 sets. One for the wall and one to play with. -
Has golf gotten more or less popular in the last 10 years?
jmorg19 replied to Used2PlayALot's topic in Golf Talk
My thoughts exactly!! People don't look at it that way. Even a $40 round comes out to around $10 an hour -
"Off-brand" or Major Brand Irons

I ordered through Hireko before and they put together the club. High quality work. Not even a smudge out of place. I have only heard reviews on the last generation Caimans and they were overwhelmingly positive, so I am thinking of taking my chances. I'll see the price difference between Hireko and Golf Works to make my decision from that. Thank you for the reassurance of the off brand clubs -

I open the face way up and get it to flop. I don't use that shot too much, but when I do, it gets the job done. Plus the 54*, I can move the ball within my stance to change the angle enough to completely subtract a club from my bag. -
After this season passes, I am planning to replace my 4 year old, full cavity irons with some nice new tour style blades. I found some called Power Play Caiman's and they seem legit. They aren't a clone brand, but they don't shell out for advertising either. This makes them relatively inexpensive, AND you can get them custom built for relatively cheap. Has anyone ever tried one of the bigger "off-brands"? I'm not planning on spending anything more than $550 on the set. Here are the clubs http://www.hirekogolf.com/hireko/orderportal/catalog_presentation/by_group/0/2991/0/0/0/0/0

That is enough for 3 dinners at Taco Bell. Walking it is.

What kind of price difference between walking and driving are we talking?

49* and 54*. Call me weird, but I don't see the need for 4 wedges -
Best Premium, Tour Compression Ball

I have always gotten better wind results with Callaway's. I have only played the Hex's, so I can't say for previous generations. I felt the Bridgestone's got pushed around more (but not an unplayable amount) than the Callaway. -
Has golf gotten more or less popular in the last 10 years?
jmorg19 replied to Used2PlayALot's topic in Golf Talk
I think the popularity of golf has gone down tremendously. The two factors I account for this is 1.) the economy and 2.) it is viewed by the younger generation as an "old man sport". A lot of people just cannot afford to play golf every weekend in tougher times. Golf is by no means a cheap game. As for the second point, from the point of view of a college student, there are only a few of my friends that play golf consistently through the year. They don't like to play because it takes more skill than throw a ball in a hoop or kicking a ball into a goal. It is also too slowed paced for the ADD generation. Combine this with the older generation that used to play getting older, there is just a complete lack of faithful golfers. -
My whole frame of mind is I would rather have the distance to get it around the green and have a short chip than lay back and have a 100 yd shot from the middle of the fairway. Short of playing the US Open, it seems that this approach would work well (at least for me) in any other situation.

I got a Slazenger Wrath set when I first started and still own them. They have held up well and are very forgiving. I don't know if they still make them, but worth a shot.

If I were to design and open a range, I would ...

Put a very nice car out at the 350 yd mark to give me motivation for hitting that far. -
I use a Rocketballz clone sand wedge and I love it. Not only was it custom-built for $25, it is heavier than an RBZ and other bigger names. It was a mixture of cost and personal preference that swayed my decision. The only thing I wouldn't really put in the hands of an "off-brand" company would be a driver/woods. I feel like there is too much that could go wrong with those as opposed to an iron where grooves and weighting are really what matter. My next set of irons may actually be custom-built off-brand that are supposed to be amazing. And it is about $300 max for a full set. Can not beat that.
