How Many Courses Have You Played?
chipper2 replied to gortyl's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Well, I enjoy playing different courses. I am semi-retired and get to travel both for business and pleasure. Last May I finished my quest when I played Wildhorse Resort & Casino in Pendleton, OR. This was my state number 50. I have also played in 6 Canadian provinces. As for countries I now have 20 - Austria, Bahamas, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, U.S.A., and Viet Nam. Total courses played - 858. I collect a logo ball from each course played (have 803, not all courses have logo balls). I also save a poker chip ball marker if they have them. -
Being in my early 70's and living n Michigan here are my plans. November - Week before Thanksgiving going with 3 others to Santee, SC for 4 to 6 days of golf. December - Sit home look at the snow and dream January - Trip to L.V. (pronounced "Lost Wages") with side trips to Palm Springs, CA and St. George, UT. Golf all three locations. February - Rented condo in Gulf Shores, AL area. Lots of golf in AL & FL March - pray for early spring This plan is designed not to use up energy by exercising.

I keep a record of courses played and my scores. I have played 852 course in all 50 states. I have played in 6 Canadian providences and in 21 Countries. These includes course in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. I get a logo ball from each courses played (if they have them). I display them in 100-ball racks in my den. At present I have 797 balls. Lately I also have been getting a poker chip ball marker if available. -

Earlier this year I finished my quest when I play Wildhorse Resort in Pendleton, ID. I save a logo ball from each course (if they have them). At present I have 796 balls displayed in 8 100-ball racks. -
My last 20 plays consisted of 5 in Michigan on my home course and 5 on other Michigan courses, the came winter. Played 6 in South Carolina on a Myrtle Beach trip with friends in November. Then 1 in Puerto Rico in December, followed by one in Arizona, 1 in Nevada and 2 in Utah in January. Since then have been looking out at snow and wondering if I will ever be able to play again in Michigan. I would say in playing season 5 out 20 are on my home course.

Have you played any of Golf Digest's Top 100 Courses
chipper2 replied to Jeepthrills's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I have only played one Top 100 course: Quarry at La Quinta - wonderful Top 100 Public Courses: Wolf Creek - (in 40mph wind - hit my only 300 yard drive) Tullymore - pretty course Bay Harbor - view of water more impressive than course Grand Traverse - The Bear - Tough but fair Boyne Highland - Heather course - beautiful and fun Ko'Olau - a Lawrence Welk reply "Wonderful, Wonderful" -
With 12 months to go I would not be interested in playing with people I do not know. My stepson and the two grandsons along with a few friends I normally golf with would be perfect for me. As to where I would play. Finish my goal of 50 states. I now have 48 and need WA, OR, ID and MT. I have played in 21 countries on 4 continents. Play a few more countries and maybe Augusta National & St. Andrews and I would pass on with no golf regrets.

I will be in San Juan for a few days on business. Would like to get at least one round in. Can anyone tell me about the course in Bayamon or Caguas? Any other suggestions. I will not have a car so will need to use public transportation or taxi.

I live in mid-Michigan. There is a great number of wonderful courses to choose from. For muni - Groesbeck in Lansing. Within 30 minute drive I have Hawk Hollow, Timber Ridge and Eagle Eye. A couple hour drive away you can add Tullymore and St. Ives. Do I need to say more.

Most difficult course you've ever played....
chipper2 replied to marrsh28's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I played all 18 holes of Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV with 30 to 40 mph winds. We were absolutly sand blasted at the end of the day. The plus side - I hit my first 300 yard drive. The ball got up in the wind and I wondered if it would ever come down. -
I was given a Bushnell GPS Rangefinder Watch. Used it for a couple of rounds while in Florida over Christmas. Loved it.

Joekelly is right, Thailand is wonderful. Played there is 2001 with a friend from the U.K. and then again last March. We booked a package which included 3 rounds in Vietnam and 6 in Thailand (Pattaya and Bangkok). We then played 3 more in Bangkok area and I stopped off in Japan for one round (expensive). Thailand courses are beautiful and reasonably priced. Hotels are cheap and food is wonderful and very inexpensive. Cannot wait to go back again.

Number of Different Courses a Year?
chipper2 replied to Uncle Peter's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I like to play different courses. I also travel on business. In the past 12 months I have played in Canada, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Morroco, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. In this period I played over 50 courses I had not played previously. -
I have played a number of Michigan courses. My number 1 choice would be Kingley Club a private course near Traverse City. Other great courses St. Ives, Tullymore, Eagle Eye, and maybe 100 more. Michigan has great courses.

What's the hottest weather you've ever golfed in?
chipper2 replied to divot dave's topic in Golf Talk
In March (2012) I played 3 rounds in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). High temperatures were between 105 and 108. 4 to 5 bottles of water per 18-hours. Then 10 rounds in Thailand (Pattaya and Bangkok) where it was a cool 96 to 98. -
I play by myself out of nessary. I travel on business and many times I stop at courses and there are very few playing. I enjoy it except for one factor. I have bad eyes and do not always know where my ball went. In the last 11 years have played over 700 different coursesin 38 states and 20 countries.

Just returned from my Southeast Asia trip. Found a Japanese golf forum website in English (golfjin.com). Posted a message on it and was answered by an American living and working in Japan. He picked me up at hotel and we played Caledonian Golf Club about 30 minute drive. A very nice course. In excellent conditon, challenging and fun to play. Price included cart and a meal at he turn (mandatory). Price was around $180. I was advised that many of the courses closer to Narita Airport can be booked in advance and are even less than the one we played. It truly was a wonderful day and would do it again if staying overnight near airport.

I played Kingsley Clyb several years ago and I consider it as one of the best 3 courses I have played in Michigan. That includes St. Ives, Tullymore, all 4 Boyne Highland couses, both Boyne Mountain courses, Black Forest, Grand Traverse's Bear and Wolverine courses, and Eagle Eye, It is difficult, but was great fun. If you can pay the money and play it.
-
In late March I will be returning to the States from a 15 day golf package trip to Vietnam and Thailand. I will be staying 2 nights near Narita Airport in Japan. Anybody know anything about the courses there? I plan to get a round in if the weather cooperates.
-
202 goals: play 100 rounds break 100 regularly break 90 (I have had several rounds in low 90s) finish my goal of playing in all 50 states (I have 36 down, only 14 to go) increase my list of countries played in to 25 (I have 18 at present)
-
I will be playing 3 courses in the Ho Chi Minh area (Song Be Golf Resort, Vietnam Golf & CC, and Long Thanh GC) in early March as part of a 15 golf package to Vietnam & Thailand. We will also play 7 Thai courses in Pattaya and Bangkok areas. Played previously in Thailand in 2001. Will report on Vietnam golf when I return late in March. Might possibly get a round in Japan on the way back as I will be there for 2 nights.
