Just wondering if any of you have had the chance to hit these side by side? I play the MP-30's now and do not have the time to hit the range as much as I used to. I am looking for something with a little bit more forgiveness and I have a chance to do a straight up trade for a set of TM TP's. Would the TM's be any more forgiving than the MP-30's? I have called the pro shop in my area but they do not have the TP's to demo. Can anyone help me out??

thanks for the help.

Hey all. I've been offered free passes for the Monday practice round at the Memorial next week. I never went on Monday before this year because it always fell on Memorial Day. Being a non-holiday do you think any players will be there being the Pro-Am is Wednesday? Thanks.

They can be bent by any clubmaker cast or not. I had all my X-14 irons bent 1* flat after I bought them, by a respectable clubmaker of course.

Ironic you mention that because I did the same thing. I played the MP-30's for a year then had our first child so play was limited. I sold the MP-30's and bought a set of X-14's. Played the Cally's for 2 weeks then drove 65 miles and bought my MP-30's back. For those who say that the MP-30 is the worst iron Mizuno ever came out with is nuts. They are very under rated and I won't let them go again. Good luck with your search. FWIW I have hit the MP-52's and they are an excellent stick. My demo was shafted with PX 5 and they felt very good, but really the only difference that was really noticeable was the 52's ball flight was higher than the 30's. 52's had a little bit bigger sweetspot and maybe a tad more forgiving but it's splitting hairs IMO. You can also get a set of MP-30's on ebay for a very good price right now.

Keeping head still through swing
flybub replied to ScottyCameron's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Before I start my backswing I find a dimple, letter, number, or something on the ball. I keep focused on that spot until I see the clubface pass through. This does 2 things for me: 1. It keeps my head still through the swing and if I keep my head still it keeps my lower body quiet with less lateral motion. 2. If I am focused on that spot on the ball there are no other swing thoughts that pop in my head during the swing. There is the ball, make a relaxed but aggressive pass through it. -
I just recently bought an '07 Burner. I tried the Diablo and hated it. Did not like the look at address, the sound, and the ball flight was too high for me (could have been the shaft though). The Burner felt very good and looks even better. I had been using a Cleveland Launcher and the TM is about 1/2" longer than the Cleveland but it did not bother me a bit. My driver yardage increased by about 8 yards and the spin is much lower than the Cleveland. FWIW: I also tried the '09 Burner but I did not care for it as much as I did the '07. I had a pretty nasty hook with the '09. I thought it might have just been that day, but I went back and tried it a few days later and the hook was still there. The face on the '07felt more solid as well.

help with purchase: x-14s for $200 or BH-5 for $100?
flybub replied to Lopyswine's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The X-14 Pro Series (BH-5) has less offset than the X-14 regulars. The offset look doesn't bother me much as long as the club performs for the swing I have. Think of the Pro Series like you would the newer generation of Callaway irons. For example the X-22 and X-22 tours: The X-22 would probably be used by a higher handicap because of the higher offset and more forgiveness. The X-22 Tour might be used by descent players with a repeateable swing and good ball strikers. The offset is used to help get the ball airborn and to some extent it helps to get the club face squared. I previously played the X-14 Pro Series but after 3 kids and a home, my playing time took a dive so I bought a set of X-14 regulars. -
help with purchase: x-14s for $200 or BH-5 for $100?
flybub replied to Lopyswine's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Just to give you a little bit of inside information. The Hogan BH-5 is the Callaway X-14 Pro Series. They are the exact same specs except they have the name Hogan on them. But since Callaway owns Hogan, I would call it them the same club. Callaway Pre-owned is not going to sell you junk. Plus if they are still running the spring test drive you can always send them back and get your full refund. The prices on the X-14's have gone up. The first week of March I bought a set of them with the uniflex steel shaft, standard everything Like New for $299. 6 of the 8 irons were still in the plastic. The price for a used set seems high, but you can always check the pga value guide and see what they are worth too. -
Why did you buy your Callaway Wedge?
flybub replied to AbsoluteZero's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
My Cleveland 588 56* was shot so I was in need of a new wedge. Roger Cleveland designed the Callaway X-forged wedges so I bought those because the look at address was the same as my 588. There was no new look at address, same great look but a better feel. So good I bought a 52* X-Forged Vintage and 58* (w/ C-grind and MD grooves) X-Forged Vintage. Very Happy with the purchase. -
Nike One Black (08) or Taylormade Burner TP
flybub replied to flybub's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
My dad plays the NXT Tours and I played them a few rounds last year and did not care for them much. I just got home from Dick's and while I was there I bought a box of Nike One Blacks. I got on ebay earlier today and found 6 dozen new Burner TP w/LDP for $75 so I gobbled those up to. So needless to say I'm gonna answer my own question to this thread hopefully this weekend . Thanks for the replies and insight. -
Nike One Black (08) or Taylormade Burner TP
flybub replied to flybub's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I played a Srixon Trispeed and the Platinum together for 9 holes and the Trispeed was consistantly 12-15 yards longer off the tee and long irons. But I was unhappy with the greenside control of the Trispeed. What I gained in distance off the tee, I lost around the greens. But of course with some time to practice with the ball I could make it work but I was not crazy about the feel coming off the short irons with the Srixon. For example: Hole 15 is a 405 yard par 4. Course was wet but greens were actually in good shape with a little bit of a firm feel, not too many ball marks into the greens. I hit a 2 really good drives both in middle of the fariway, Trispeed was 14 yards longer than the Platinum so I took the Trispeed. I was 135 yards out with no wind with a 9 iron for my second shot, pin in the middle of the green. First shot was the Platinum, excellent contact, perfect ball flight for me, dropped and stopped 12 ft. below the hole. Trispeed: again made good contact, the ball felt much harder than the Platinum, it hit about 6 feet left of the pin bounced about as high as the pin and rolled off the back of the green. Mind you I hit the ball fairly high and I make very good contact with my irons so for a ball to do that is cause for me to get rid of it. I like the distance it gave me but not the performance off the short irons. If I had played the platinum I would have had a shot of about 149-150 which is a strong 8 or smooth 7 for me so I definately would have had to club up, so I'm looking for something longer but still descent performance off the short irons. The course I play in league is very dry and firm so I can only imagine what the Trispeed would have done on a rock hard green. Have heard good things about both the Black and Burner TP so those are what I've narrowed it down to. -
I have been looking over these balls for the last week or so and cannot decide which to go with. I have played Nike One Platinum for the last 2 years, but I'm looking for more distance without losing too much feel. I know it will be next to impossible to replace the spin of the Platinum but I'm losing distance off the tee. The Nike One Black is on closeout at the local Dick's for $29.99 and the Burner is going for $24.99. My driver swing speed is around 95 mph and I still would like to keep green side spin as high as I can. Can anyone help me out?

I have played a Cleveland Launcher Ti460 the last 2 years and thought I'd start looking for a new driver because the Cleveland was balooning on me. After a couple hours of hitting drivers I was not real impressed with any of the new drivers except for the Ping Rapture but it was more than I was willing to pay. I asked the guy working with me if he had any of last year models and he said he had a few 2007 TM Burners. I was skeptical at first because I did not like the feel at all of the 2009 Burner, it felt terrible through impact. My first 5 balls with the 07 and I could tell a big difference between it and the 09, much better feel and felt more comfortable during the swing. I got rid of the balooning, picked up a small draw (unusual for me with a driver), and added about 8 yards to my drives with the 07 TM Burner. The other good thing was I got it for $179 brand new. If you haven't yet, give the 07 TM Burner a try, you might be as suprised as I was.

Which type of face is best for distance control
flybub replied to Smilesy's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have an Odyssey DFX 6600 and even though it is a few years old I have not found a putter to take it out of my hands and I have had my share from White Hots to Scotty Camerons to Yes. The SC's are very well balanced but I was not good on with it on shorter putts, but longer puts I had a very good lag distance and feel. The White Hot XG was just the opposite, Money on short puts -
My only other alternative was a lighter grip. The grip I have on now is 76 grams. I'm looking at grips in the 55-60 gram range which increases the swing weight by about 2 points. Doesn't sound like much but it's enough to feel a difference, so I'm going that route before I get the tape. My putter is a little dated (bought it new in 06 but I have not found a better feeling putter to kick it out of the bag) and I feel as though the head is too light on longer putts because I can feel it moving outside of my stroke and I don't like that feeling. So I need just a little bit more weight in the head of the putter.

X-tour or X-forged wedges vs. Vokey
flybub replied to AbsoluteZero's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was playing Cleveland 588's. I played a Vokey 200 52* but didn't care much for the feel compared to the 588. My 588 56* RTG was showing its age so I got a 52* and 58* X-Forged Vintage wedges and have been very happy so far. The feel is great coming off both of these wedges. The 58 has the C-grind along with the MD grooves and it has been my money club so far this year. To me the look is the same at address as the 588's and that also was a huge selling point for me. -
thanks for the help.

I'm looking for some lead tape to put on my putter. Where is the best place to get it? The only sports store I have close to me is Dicks. Thanks for any helpl.
-
It could just be that your are hanging back during impact (too much weight toward your right foot). If your freinds tell you that you are not firing through, are they talking about rotation or weight shift? You don't want to slide/sway, but you also do not want to hang back on your right side because that will cause a hook.

Cleveland 588 wedge replacements?
flybub replied to jdotConnor's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I just picked up a new 52* and 58* Callaway X-forged vintage wedges and they replaced my 588 RTG wedges (51* and 56*). They are designed by Roger Cleveland, who also designed the Cleveland wedges, and for me the 588 wedge was very aspiring and gave me confidence at address. The Callaway wedges have the same look as the 588 at address, but have that soft forged feel. The Vintage will eventually rust so I will be back to the familiar sight I had with the 588's. -
I would imagine you are talking about the 09 Burner, but I just picked up an 07 Burner 3 wood from Dicks for $129.99 and you can print a $10.00 off coupon for anything over $50. So I got it for 119.99 + tax. Or you can hit Carlsgolfland.com and they have them for $119 with free shipping and if you're not in Michigan you save yourself the sales tax. I love the Burner 3 wood so far. I had to retire my Titleist 980f and I am drilling this 3 wood. Very easy to hit both off the fairway and tee.

I read an article Tiger did in a Golf Digest a couple years ago that talked about this. This was written after he changed his swing. He said his 5 iron is played from the middle of his stance. If he plays a shorter iron than that he moves the ball about a balls width toward his right foot, 6i-SW are all played from same position. If he goes to a longer iron he plays the ball about a balls width toward his front foot, 4i-3W are all played from same position. This will obviously change if he is playing his stinger or a higher trajectory but general rule of thumb this is how he does it. I have been working on this method (formerly Hogans method) and it has worked out better for me as far as ball striking goes.

2009 taylor made burner - choosing the shaft flex
flybub replied to Nyper's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was in the same boat as you about 2 weeks ago. I've always hit a 10.5* Driver so that was the first TM I tried. R9 10.5* R Shaft and the ball sprayed everywhere, changed to a stiff shaft and the trajectory was way to low for me. The rep spent more time tinkering with a wrench than I did hitting the ball. If I have to take a toolbox with me to the course to adjust this club I don't want it so I put it back. I then grabbed a 9.5* Burner R Shaft and it hit better as far as direction but something felt different at the bottom of the swing close to impact. I can't put my finger on what exactly it was but it felt uncomfortable, it was almost like I was coming under the ball instead of through the ball. So I put that back and the rep handed me last years Burner, 9.5* R Flex....and I smoked it! 8 out of 10 drives were rifles right down the line. Trajectory was perfect, I could play both fade and draw if I needed to, swing speed was up, I gained 11 yards of carry over my Cleveland Ti460 Launcher, and it was $100 cheaper than the 09 Burner. So needless to say I walked out of there very happy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I had so many people tell me the 09 Burner is better than the 08 when I found out for myself this is not true. Shafts are going to vary by manufacturer, some manuf. reg flex could be close to someone else's stiff shafts. I was somewhat pleased with the ReAx (Fuji) shafts in the TM drivers, they provide very good feedback and perform the way I need them to when I need them to (so much so I bought the matching Burner 3 wood yesterday). Good luck in your search. By the way: My average swing speed with the 08 Burner with R. Flex was 95 mph. 09 Burner with R. Flex was 93 mph. R9 with Stiff Flex was 91 mph. -
Alternative to the Nike One Platinum
flybub replied to flybub's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
My swing speed is not that high so I'm hesitant about this ball (B330S). If I tried any of the Bridgestones it would probably be the B330 RX. A freind of mine gave me a sample sleeve of the Srixon TriSpeeds so I'll try those and see what happens. Chipping around the yard it feels close to the same as the Platinum but I can tell just by chipping around it does not have the spin the Platinum does. But for free I'll try any ball.
