I have the same problem with my wedges, but I never considered that it might be the shaft flex. Do you work the ball right to left pretty aggressively? I play a pretty strong draw on my normal iron shots, so I have a pretty strong move from the inside to push the ball. My wedges don't have nearly as much draw action on them (which I think is mainly due to the fact that they are not in the air as long), so it does not quite make up for the push of my normal swing. Hopefully that makes sense. My solution has been to lessen my inside-out move with my shorter irons. My wedge swing thought is "single plane...straight back, straight through". Give it a shot.

I play poorly with strangers for one simple reason....putting. I like to take my time, mark and clean my ball, read my putts, etc. That is where the scoring happens and I am trying to focus on improving my putting. It seems that to almost everybody I play with (except my two normal playing buddies that are just like me), golf is about hitting the ball as hard as they can and watching it fly through the air. When they get on the green...the hole is over. They tap it around a few times and then pick it up once it gets within a couple feet. I just makes me very uncomfortable on the greens.

the top flite gamer shredded way too much off my wedges. One dozen was enough for me. I played the D2 feel last year and loved it. It gave me as much check-up off my wedges and short irons as most of the mid-tier three piece balls do. The difference in greenside spin between ultra-premium balls and the middle range three piece balls is big, in my opinion. And the difference in full swing wedge spin between the middle range and the D2 feel is not that much. So, it is one extreme or the other for me. ProV1's when I feel like spending the money, D2 Feels when I don't.

I took out my 8 year old nephew for his first game not long ago. It went pretty well. We played all of the par 3's from 75 yards, 4's from 125, and 5's from 150. That worked out really well, both for pace of play and for confidence. I made sure to play from the same spot that he did. I did not want him to feel like he was watching me play all day.

when I make it on tour...I am going all out. I am going to wear the really baggy solid color knickers, white long sleeve shirt that buttons up the front, and a neck tie tucked inside of the shirt between the buttons halfway down, and of course, the flat cap. Also, when I take off my cap to shake the hand of the man I just destroyed by 10 shots, you will find my hair parted straight down the center and greased all the way to my scalp. Maybe suspenders on Sundays?

Thanks for the replies and advice. Several of you sound like you have clubs that "get it". This is more about principle than money. My nephew lives in West Virginia, so the number of clubs within reasonable driving distance is limited. Hopefully one of them is a bit more reasonable. I am definitely going to do some research before our next outing.

I was amazed by his speech. When most people try to say things like that...you can tell that they feel obligated, and it comes across as halfhearted. I was watching, mesmerized by this awesome speech, and nearly threw something at my TV when they ended the broadcast mid-sentence. I was wondering if anybody else was surprised by it. Glad to see this thread to know I was not alone.

I am not being cheap. Honestly. I took my 8 year old nephew out for his first round of golf a few weeks ago. I bought him clubs for his birthday and had taken him to the range a few times. He is really excited. I was taking a few days off work, so this was late on a Tuesday morning. I wanted to make sure that the course was empty so he could take his time and enjoy it. We went into the clubhouse, picked him out a hat as a souvenir of his first round, and went to the counter to check in. I was amazed when the lady gave me my total that it was the same price for each of us. I had more important things to worry about, but later I started to think about it and it really ticked me off. I started looking on the websites of some of the other courses I play. A few of them have a junior rate, but it is only a small discount lumped in as the junior/senior rate. A few of them had decent deals on junior memberships, but the daily fee discount is a joke. With many courses sitting with an empty first tee box the vast majority of most weekdays...why not have a rock bottom price for kids to play golf during their summer school break? I guess if my nephew picks up the game seriously in the coming years, I will jut have to buy him a membership somewhere. I live over 2 hours away, and neither my brother or sister-in-law play, so it is a tough situation. I just figured that my sister-in-law could take him to the course every once in a while, but it is hard to justify $35-$50 for a few hours of entertainment for a 8 year old. The next time I hear someone complaining about the declining number of golfers and courses being in financial trouble, I am just going to smack them.

Once you regrip that one, you will probably realize how bad your others are. I switched from standard to midsize tour velvets not long ago. I am a pretty big dude with good size hands. I never thought I had a problem, but had several people tell me that I should try a bigger grip. Honestly, I cant really tell the difference. I still hit it the same. I had only played about a year before I switched...maybe if I was a long time golfer I would notice the change. I am one of the people who likes to do things myself, so I did my own grips. It was not difficult. I bought a cheap paint roller pan to catch the solvent, a medium size bottle of paint thinner, one of those little ketchup bottles so I could use it to squirt the solvent (do not store solvent in a bottle like this...it will most likely melt it over time), a roll of grip tape, and the grips themselves. Other than a few clean rags or paper towels...that is all you will need. It took me a few hours to finish the job, but did not run into any problems. I learned to push the grip onto the shaft by the butt, rather than pulling it on. If you pull it over, it will stretch and want to stay that way. I had some problems getting the tape glue on the grip as I was wiping it off. It took a few rounds of play and cleaning for it to eventually rub off. Good luck.

When they brought on the heavy breathing British dude for about an hour today....my head just about exploded. They need to learn to mute the mics of people who are not talking.

Anybody else listen to the coverage of the British on XM radio? I never realized how horrible the normal PGA Tour coverage was!! I find myself spacing out and only half listening to the team that does normal tour stops. The group of guys doing the British Open is great. It was more like a day-long golf talk show with constant and current updates of what was going on at the course. It got me through Thursday and Friday at work!

I just started golfing a little over a year ago. For my first few months, I was really frustrated with lack of distance and spin, so when I first read about s&t; I tried it immediately. That was about this time last year, and it worked wonders for my game. I finally learned how to come at the ball steeply and hit the ball first, divot after the ball. I gained nearly 20 yards on my irons from the solid contact and increased clubhead speed! Like others have said, my problems were with the driver and long irons. The newly found steepness of my downswing translated to those clubs as well, which is not always desired. I also had a really hard time working the ball left to right when I needed to. I have moved back to a more traditional weight transfer to flatten out my swing a bit, but I use my old S&T; move sometimes on the range when I have lost that feel for the crisp shot. Usually after a couple crisp S&T; shots, I can go back to my standard swing with a better picture of what I am trying to create.

I play Eye2's. I bought them on ebay about 14 months ago for ~300. I did a lot of research and was very picky before I finally bought the set that I did. I got a set with matching serial numbers, 3-lw, in the correct color code for me. The LW is worth $40-70 alone, so finding a set with matching serials that includes the lw is not that easy. The reason I chose the Eye2's was so that I could get my money back if I did not enjoy the game. I could not find another set of clubs that were perfect for a beginner that would not drop value like a rock. I could not be more happy with these clubs. They have been forgiving and consistent. I can hit high shots, low shots, work the ball both ways. I decided not to use the SW and LW, the grooves were quite worn and I did not want to put any more wear on them. I bought a couple of Vokey wedges to take their place. The lofts on these old irons is much weaker than today's clubs, sometimes by a full club. If you have a problem hitting 6 iron when your buddies are hitting 7...you might want to look for something else.

If it weren't for people playing rules like these...the already slow pace of play at most courses would increase dramatically. I am all for it.

Maybe it is time to have a discussion with your superintendent? I bet it would make his day to know that some members/regular players are concerned about how to properly care for the course.

I have only been playing for a little over a year, but I have found that leagues and outings give people a case of the stupids. From what I can tell, there are two different types of players...and they are both equally slow. The first type is the guy who is out to just have fun and get drunk with his league buddies. The other type is the people looking to win the league, taking 20 minutes on every green. I like to go out for 9 holes in the evenings after work, but nearly every course around here has leagues every day. I have started showing up at the course around 6:45 - 7:00...hoping to be the last person on the course. I generally catch up with the tail end of the league after 3 or 4 holes, and since I have nobody behind me I start playing several balls or spending a bunch of time practicing chipping and putting on each green.

Anybody know why she was playing a pink ball on a Thursday? Thought those were only for Sunday.

I love what he is doing. I am lucky to live in an area with about a billion golf courses. There are several courses that I do not like at all. I have had really bad rounds, or they are boring, and guess what...I am not going to waste my time or money playing them. So, since Kenny does not like Torrey Pines or links style golf...I think his strategy is brilliant. This Ryder Cup is HIS major. It is at home. It is on a course that he feels owes him one. I would bet you my week's pay that Kenny thinks about that 1996 PGA every single day. It has been eating at him for 12 god forsaken years and he feels like this is his chance at redemption. Listen....most of the United States does not give a flying fark about the Ryder Cup. I know that I sure don't. The only reason I will be watching is Kenny Perry. We might get to see an exorcism live on TV.

He also flipped off his ball on #9 on Sunday. I found it kinda humorous at the time.
