  1. I switched to the overlap this winter. With the overlapping grip, my right hand would get too active and, after a bad round, I decided to change it. It took a little while to get used to, but I have seen an increase in distance and accuracy. I don't necessarily think the improvements came just from my grip, though. It has helped me relax my grip and my swing tempo has improved.
  2. It sounds like you are in the perfect situation to get there. I would love to have the kind of time you do to play and practice, but I only get to play once a week and sometimes only every other week. I live in a rural area and get to the driving range about 4 times a year, so I am worthless when it comes to practice regimens. I do know that hitting some short range shots in my yard made the biggest difference in my handicap. I didn't believe all the people who said short game would make the difference, but trust me, its the truth. Good luck!
  3. 100- my third time out 90-a year into it 80-4 years into it I got a quick start but then played sparingly for a few years. I had to teach myself, so it took a while to get below 80. I can't get below 70, yet!
  4. Sliced my drive today on number 10 which is a long par 4. Just knew I was dead behind a couple of pines. Turns out I have a chance of getting on the green if I can hit a high draw with my 8 iron, missing two trees in the process. Take a great smooth swing and put the ball 15 feet from the hole. I didn't make the putt, but that shot boosted my confidence right when I needed it and got me started on an even par back nine.
  5. Mine is #4. It's a 370 yard par 4 with a dogleg right. You can't hit driver off the tee because if you hit it straight its O.B. long and if you play the appropriate fade your ball will funnel right to a water hazard. Three wood is the best bet for par but it can go through the fairway and into a bunker. OB left the whole way, and water hazard right off the tee shot. If you decide to play it safe and hit a long iron, trees block your approach shot and it's usually 200 yards to the center of the green. A creek crosses in front of the green and a large bunker above the green kills anything long. The prevalent wind pushes shots toward the water hazard. It's just a hole where bad things can happen on every shot. Until the ball stops rolling on the green, you are nervous. That hole can kill a good start.
  6. I cannot make a birdie! I shot a 78 today with 6 bogeys. If its a ten footer to save par, most of the time I can pull it off, but if it's a ten footer for birdie I never seem to make them. I often hit the lips and miss to the high side which is frustrating. I know this is a mental problem so y'all have to tell me what do y'all think about when standing over those 10 foot and under birdie putts. I am averaging 31.5 putts per round, so i'm not an awful putter, I just can't make the ones that can really help my score. HELP!
  7. I am doing what I want to do and the job I have does not require a college education, but I am glad I have one. It's a nice cushion to have and people look at you different when you have one, no matter what job you are doing.
  8. I keep one in the bag during the summer to kill snakes with. Does a better job than woods and has a longer shaft than my other irons so I can stay away from those squirmy rascals.
  9. Around $1500. My irons were the biggest part, almost everything else i have bought year old models to save money. The irons were a christmas present from my wife.
  10. I was sitting here thinking about my round yesterday and noticed the shot of the day thread and thought about which of my shots yesterday would be my "shot of the day". To my surprise, it was a beautiful pitch shot that saved me a par. Back when I had a higher handicap, it would have been the 3 wood that got me on the green in two on a par five or the 290 yard drive on number 1. As my handicap has dropped, my "shot of the day" has really changed and this realization shocked me. As your handicap has changed, have you noticed a similar trend or am I just an oddball on this?
  11. Shot a 75. Finished strong with two birdies on the last three holes and left the birdie putt on the other hole 1 inch short. Had a really good chance to be at par today but let a few chips get away. I'm really getting things going right this year!
  12. I love the 68's! It's my first full set of musclebacks. I went to the golf store to buy the 58's but when I got in there and took some swings with both clubs, I just loved the feel of the 68's. The short irons are just perfect and the long irons are not nearly as punishing as you would think. The sole grind was one of the biggest things for me as my local courses are usually firm and I love a narrow sole for clean contact. I would recommend them to anyone that is a solid irons player. It doesn't hurt that they are absolutely beautiful. I had some Titleist 735's and was happy with them, but I love the weight of the mizuno's. Thanks for the advice. I hardly ever get to the range and it leaves too much time with me at my house dreaming up changes to apparently ruin my golf game.
  13. How do you avoid a letdown? What thoughts do you try and stay away from or what thoughts do you try and keep? I played my best round with my new irons on sunday and feel like it was probably the best mental round of my life. Now, I am sitting at my house and cannot get golf off my mind. In the past, this has lead to problems because I let my mind get in the way the next time out I over analyze everything. Lets hear some good mental advice.
  14. Shot a 76 today in a stout wind and was thrilled! I got new irons for christmas and have had a couple of rough outings getting used to them and they are finally coming together for me. Today was probably the best mental round of golf I have ever played. No three putts and there were only two decisions that I regretted.
  15. For 170 I need the hole to be uphill with a strong wind in my face, an open stance, and I will open the blade a little bit just too make sure I don't hit it too far.
  16. I wish I could get on here and talk about the wonderful score I posted today, but it just wasn't my day. I have to get to the driving range with my new irons. The only stat of mine that has really changed is my greens in regulation. My putting and driving has gotten better but the second shot keeps killing me. I did try the advice and it definitely helped. I didn't hook a iron all day but I just seemed to be a little off on every approach shot. Hopefully a few hours on the range and a few more rounds with the new irons will alleviate the problem.
  17. Thanks for the help guys. The ball usually starts straight at the target except for the pulls, they stay left for the duration. My divots tend to aim right of the target. I know I can aim right and just play this shot, but I am not going to compensate for a bad habit. I'm playing this afternoon and will try to keep my left arm straight and change my swing path so it is not so in to out. I will let you know how things go when i get in.
  18. I need to tap into the vast amount of knowledge in this forum. I am trying to develop a more consistent swing this year (aren't we all!) and I have really concentrated on hitting out on the ball. I focus on hitting the back near quadrant of the ball. Unfortunately, this keeps resulting in a pull with a draw and the occassional hook. Am I just coming from to far inside? I dont think my stance or clubface are closed but I do have the tendency to lose focus and inadvertantly close my club face. It has been too wet here to play much so I have just been hitting my wedge in my backyard. The ball tends to wind up anywhere from 5 yards to twenty yards left of my target. What should I try?
  19. I had my swing grooved and was hitting my irons better than I ever had in my life. Got fitted for some new irons and couldn't wait to play. Weather turned too cold to play and I decided to fire up the Wii. My tempo is now officially ruined. I am such an idiot. Starting over on the fundamentals in the morning. I will never play that game again!
  20. Any recommendations? I'm getting new irons for Christmas from my wife (she's awesome), and I am looking for some good advice. I tend to draw the ball, especially with my short irons, and have a hard time hitting a fade. I like my 735's but If I turn down a new set now I might not ever get another chance. Any advice is welcome.
  21. I recently played with a guy that shoots 95+ most of the time. I had never even met the guy before that morning and for the most part, he was fun to play with. Unfortunately, I was hitting a balloon fade that day with my driver and just couldn't stop. I never complained about it and never solicited advice. This guy decided he could finally see my problem on number 9's tee box. He told me to keep my right arm tucked closer to my body. I smiled, thanked him, and ignored him. As we made the turn, I am at 38 and he is at 52. On the green at 12, I miss a birdie putt. This guy tells me that if I will remind him at the end of the round, he will help me with my putting. I decided I had had enough and promptly ran off four straight one putts, a two putt and another one putt. The putting lesson never occurred. I shot 75, he shot 102.
  22. 2 legit 2 quit?
  23. Welcome to South Georgia. I don't know much about the courses around Valdosta but you can usually find a decent course for fair money down here. These summers usually take there toll on the courses here but fall and spring are incredible, and even freak 80 degree winter days are fun.
