Yeah, very disappointed. The difficulty is what gives the USGA its identity. If they want to become the PGA Championship, just admit it, but this is two years in a row now the USGA has decided to throw the players a bone. Tomorrow could be a different story, sure, but after listening to Mike Davis last night on the TGC, I had a feeling today was gonna be easy by Winged Foot standards.

They also need to keep rounds under 5 hours or they won’t finish bc of daylight. Mike Davis hinted last night they wanted to ease it up. But I think the biggest reason, as was mentioned, is their caving to the bitching and Moaning from two years ago. By the way, somewhere the superintendent is griping because they thrive on their course being the toughest in the world and are prolly irate the USGA told them to ease it up, cut the rough and let them score.

And just like that Tiger goes from contending tomorrow to prolly battling to make the cut.

Rory's score surprises me a lot not just because I figured he'd have lack of sleep from now being a father, but because he doesn't have a good track record on traditional U.S. Open setups, the ones with fast tracks. His one win in the Open came on a slow track. Really his only other good finish in a U.S. Open was a backdoor top-10 at Chambers Bay. Did not see this coming at all. Really, all four of his majors came on slow tracks.

Who would have thunk the a-Thompson, English, and Todd pairing would be a combined -8 in round 1.

After hearing Mike Davis last night, I am not surprised to see a few good scores early. Sounded like they wanted today to be a scoring day. Some easy pins and more receptive greens. Plus they trimmed the rough some. You got a front coming in tonight. That’s gonna change this course completely tomorrow, particularly the wind and wind direction along with the dry air.

Yeah, maybe. I don’t know. Didn’t really change my opinion of him any which has always been pretty neutral. There’s parts of Phil I like and parts I don’t. I think the commentator Phil just suits him well and would be popular with fans. Him and Feherty would be great on NBC given their dry humor. I’m very surprised with Tiger and Rory but it’s a good surprise. Thought both these guys would be well over-par by now. Still worried about tomorrow though. Have a feeling by the end of it no one will be under par. Tomorrow looks brutal.

If I were to guess, I’d say NBC makes the bigger push. I don’t know if they’re thrilled with Zinger and Phil/Feherty would be entertaining. Plus NBC doesn’t air in the meat of the season. They do mostly the Florida swing, Opens, and Fed Ex playoffs.

If I were Nick Faldo or Paul Azinger, Id be nervous about my job. Both NBC and CBS are gonna make a push for Phil just like they did Tony Romo in the NFL. He’s got the personality to succeed in that position and I think he’d consider doing it part-time for now, full-time down the road.

Spieth a train wreck. Also surprised to see Rory playing well early. Expected a rough week from him. Greens are pretty quick for early Thursday. Given the dry air coming in tomorrow, it is gonna be interesting to see if it gets like Shinnecock from two years ago. These things could get scary.

Good conditions to score. Prolly the softest the greens will be all week with no breeze. Good chance for Tiger to start well.

I actually played Winged Foot well off the tee. But the greens there are the toughest I’ve ever played in my life. I don’t lie when I say I had a couple four-putts and I’m not a three-putt player. It is brutally tough. I heard they cut the rough today and when asked why the superintendent said because they were afraid the winning score could be extremely high If they didn’t. Apparently the course is really dry and firm and it’s supposed to get drier. There’s worry the greens could get out of control this week. I loved Rory’s quite. They asked him if under par could win and he laughed and said “Not a chance.”

Thank god for a cold front. Without it, Sally would head right up to the NE and knock out play for prolly two days. The front will block it from making a visit.

Upper 90s...and I'm a scratch golfer. Brutal course. Greens are the toughest part. I had more three and four-putts that day than I've had in my last 10 rounds combined. Shinnecock is next on my list of New York courses to play, but Winged Foot is up there with Bethpage as one of the best NE courses I've played. Still, have to rank Sand Hills in Nebraska as my favorite. Excited to play Chambers Bay next month for the first time.

They get the north wind on the weekend, which is the cold wind. As someone who’s played winged foot once in that cold wind, it’s not fun.

I think Jack was one generation off. I think the age of it is over now. I think we’re in a day and age where it will be 10-15 superstars that will shine above the rest. But I don’t think it will be one. But hey, you never know. It’s just gonna be hard. Looking at the weather forecast this week at Winged Foot leaves me to believe that +10 might not be a bad score to sign with come Sunday. Dry, windy, and cool. Throw in high rough, narrow fairways and fast greens and a very long course for a par-70.

I think the days of being the next Tiger and Jack are over. I think there may be guys that get close to their talent, but it won’t just be one...it’ll be several at once. I think we’re seeing a change in golf now with the huge youth movement coming in. I think Morikawa and Wolff will be the face of the sport by the end of next year and then three years from now it’ll be a couple more new 22-year olds.

Sad to see. I really think it’s all mental with him. His head always seemed to get in the way since the ‘15 Masters. Even the Open he won, his head was playing games with him that last round. He was able to hit that shot on 14 though that changed his confidence and won him the claret jug. I hope he can fix it because he is just one major from the career GS and it would be a waste to see it all fall apart now.

Sounds like the set up next week is very similar to 06, just longer. Fairways narrow, deep rough. Heard Maltbie and Feherty say that guys playing practice rounds already complaining and expecting over par to win. Sounds like a US Open. Glad they’re gonna let Winged Foot play like Winged Foot. It’s the nations toughest course and should play like it.

Hell I think even DJ would say Koepka. Majors are the real deal. You play the regular tournaments just to make $$$ and prepare for the majors. I think Koepka even said something like he only plays practice rounds at majors.

I agree that I think he’s good for that. He livens up the game. I just think the guy is a complete douche bag and that’s putting it nicely. The cameraman thing rubbed me the wrong way and really put him in a negative light with me.

Jesus. Chill dude. You’re a little too high up in Bryson’s pants there. Didn’t know 1) There are Bryson fans out there and 2) They take things so damn seriously kinda like him.

What are the odds BDC is pisses and at the gym right now pumping iron trying to get bigger and so he can hit it longer at the USO next month thinking it will lead to a win.
-
Put $$$ on Morikawa, Simpson, and Xander pre-tourney. You know who I’m rooting for. Go Collin!!!!

Hope he enjoys his moment in the sun. Koepka will have him already chased down within a couple hours. Have a feeling Brooks is going to put his foot on the gas today.
