Thank you all for your help and responses. It helps to know that other scoring (thought it was a one stroke penalty) I've been doing it right on the occasions I have to hit a provisional.
-
So you tee off and decide to hit a provisional ball because you might be out of bounds. Your provisional ball hooks/slices deep out of bounds or into a water hazard. Are you allowed to hit another provisional? Is there a penalty for this? If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

IMO I think when a golfer starts out they should listen and TRY all the different techniques. Once they find one that is good (judging by scores and their instructor) then they should stop listening to quick fixes, tour pro's feel ect. and focus on their own swing that works for them Their have been pro's that have fundamentally wrong swings, but they work for them, so once you find YOUR swing then learn to develop it, but you may need to try a little of everyone's swing before you find yours.

It may be a dumb question, but why would they do this for each other. Whoever is on the green (say Woodland) and Bubba chips up and hits his ball. Bubba is now saved but Woodland would now be in a worse position. While I'm all for sportsmanship and all, but it is still a competition with a lot of money on the line. Can any one explain?

I've read through the last few pages of this discussion so excuse me if this has already been raised. I understand we're specifically talking about college athletes but, what if the same happened to a professional athlete? The women on the LPGA tour that have promotional contracts, or NCAA players. If they get pregnant and can no longer fulfill their contracts for a time should they loose theirs? I feel that it's the same question for either, because the result is the same.

So from what I'm understanding is either deal(I've tried the tube things they suck) or buy a new bag? There's no way to change the divider on the top?
-
I've got a titleist staff bag that I really love other then the fact that it only has a 5 way divider. I was woundering if by chance there's a way to convert or change it to a 14 way divider?

I've heard money mentioned a few time through the thread as to the reasoning behind some of the relaxing standards. Couldn't it also be because of the changing culture. Back in the 80/90's it was rare to see anyone with tattoo's. I just say a guy last weekend on the course with tattoo's from his neck all the way down to his ankles. If this continues where will be in 10/15/20 years from now. Out on the course naked swimming through the water hazards?
-
I don't think that's a stretch, even LPGA players wear skorts. I'm more talking about jeans and tee with a backwards hat. That kinnda thing. The little time I've been playing I'm seeing more and more of it.

While there's not money on the line there is smack talk normally after (I work with them but thankfully they're not my boss) so it's aggravating when they think they beat me or they're using the scores for their handicap and I know it bs
-
There are a few guys I play with occasionally and when were playing they tend to be rather loose with their scores. What I mean by that is they'll hit three balls off the tee because two went OB or the same off the fairway/rough but won't take the penalty for the strokes. I add my penalty strokes, so when were done or throughout they are winning but in reality they shouldn't be or at least a lot closer to me then yet are. We don't play for money so that really doesn't play a factor it's just very aggravating to me. Does anyone else have this problem in casual play?

Has there been a change in the " appropriate" course attaire? When I started golfing (which wasn't long ago) I was told and was expected to wear appropriate attire (collored shirt, kakis/slacks) and look professional. When I go to the local club, muni course, or even the course on post jeans tee shirts ect seen to be more then acceptable. Am I just behind the times?

Why Don't You Take Lessons?
Lowkie replied to ReviewMyGolfPro's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I ended up taking some lessons, and my question is this. Since my lessons I'm either really good (birdie or par, which aren't normal for me) or really bad ) like 12 stokes on a single hole. There is no real middle ground. Is this normal? -
Nobody ever sandbags in golf or any other sport. What would ever make you think that? lol.
-
I've updated it in my profile, it's a little higher then I expected but not the worst I've seen. But like I said, I don't really keep it updated I like beating people scratch or getting as close as I can to be able to.

@david in FL I like to compete against others and do from time to time so I do have a HC but I don't really pay attention to it or watch it closely. I just play to play. I track my progress and consistency through tracking FIR, GIR, ect. The HC is more there just for the really competitive people I play, for me I just like the challenge of trying to beat those better then me scratch, if I beat them because of my HC it's just not as good of a win to me

I don't know who could disagree with this. Golf is supposed to just be fun, just you and a little white ball that won't move and hardly ever goes exactly where you want it, not about handicaps ect.

Why Don't You Take Lessons?
Lowkie replied to ReviewMyGolfPro's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
As I said in my post I only have one day I can spare more then 30-60 min and that would be the day I spend on the course. The other days whenever I get time I'm practicing doing drills or chipping in my back yard. My first 18 I shot a 150 (I know, horrible) now I'm just above 100 and still dropping a couple shots every round. @ReviewMyGolfPro in the drills I do there are "checks" where u check ur position relative to a point like an alignment stick so u can be sure ur doing it correctly -
Why Don't You Take Lessons?
Lowkie replied to ReviewMyGolfPro's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm 28, just started golfing about 3 or 4 months ago. I haven't taken a lesson (in person) yet and don't plan to. I only have one day a week that I can actually dedicate time (more then 30-60 min) to golf. So I'd rather do online lessons/sites like this/and you tube (which from what I'm told is almost the same thing the instructor will tell me) instead of giving up time and money that I'd rather use actually playing. -
I like some others on here right in a number (+/- Par) and that's about it. While I think it's great to keep all those extra stats (and would love to so I can see where I need to improve beyond what I plainly see) I don't see where on the cards at my courses I can keep that info.

Why Don't You Take Lessons?

I actually got it off google lol. I didn't really study it all that closely and funny enough your the first one who's noticed it . I have since obviously changed it though. Thanks for the heads up! -
Why Don't You Take Lessons?

I have a complete golf instruction video from Jim McClean where he breaks down the entire swing, with drills for each part. I practice those in front of a mirror between weekend rounds. While yes I could probably take one lesson a month and give up a round of golf for it and then practice in-between the monthly sessions, but call me selfish I don't want to give up the weekly round. Again golf for me is more about the fun and time spent with friends then anything else. So I do practice with the video's and have improved a lot, I still never really expect to be PGA or Amateur level I just let it be and have fun. -
Having digested this conversation, and one with a golf buddy of mine...I have to say that the debate of long or short game really comes down to the individual player. For some players who are naturally better at the long game, then of course the short game is their area to concentrate on, and the same for the opposite. @wils5150 I have to respectfully disagree with you. I personally can't read a green to save my life yet, so it takes me more then three sometimes. If all greens were perfectly flat with the exactly same green speed then yes I would agree. But as every green is slightly different if you can't read the green (which is IMO a learned asset) then it could easily take more then 3.
