So it got above 40 today so I grabbed the new sticks (and the old ones) and headed to the range. Just for some background, I'm coming out of JPX-800's, which I liked, into the 54's. I also looked hard at the AP2's and the Cally X-forged. I was looking for something a little more precise, a little less offset, with a little more feel. I've read a lot of mixed reviews on the performance of the 54's since I ordered them, so I was curious to hit them side by side with my JPX's, which were the longest irons I've ever had - First observation is that these look really clean at address all the way through the bag. Being a Lefty, didn't really get to see this before I ordered them, so it's a relief. Almost like looking down at an oversized blade. - I'd heard a lot about distance loss with these clubs, but I don't see it. On the sweet spot they're longer than my JPX's. face doesn't really feel hot, just, well, pure. - The biggest surprise to me was miss-hits. I expected them to be less forgiving. It's interesting, really. These clubs are pretty close to being just as forgiving as the oversized JPX's. When you hit it, it doesn't sound good, doesn't feel good (especially in 40 degree weather) but when you look up, the results are much better than expected. I was catching 7 irons on the toe and was still getting 150 onto the practice green with it. I really can't complain about that. - I think the XP 105 shafts are outstanding. I got the feel and the ball flight I was looking for and they were really easy to swing. I felt like I could always turn it up a notch if I needed to get an extra 5 yards out of a club, while I always felt that was a bit of a struggle with the DG's. -I'm assuming it's as much the shaft as it is the club, but I'm getting a really, really high ball flight out of these clubs (for me) I've got an extremely flat swing and play a low draw most of the time, but the ball flight I get out of these clubs, especially the long irons, is absolutely beautiful. It's not a balloon, just a high, penetrating draw. Definately a more workable club than the JPX, too. it's been quite a while since I've been able to a big high fade with an iron, but I can make these do what I want them to. Overall I'm pretty pleased with my choice. Unfortunately I was hitting off mats so I can't really speak to the turf interaction, but I love the shape of the sole, so I'm thinking they'll be pretty good

- practice more efficiently - join a league - walk more and ride less - no club changes this year (the bag is set!) - get my hc to single digits. I know I'll get there if the wife sticks to her promise on giving me golf time 3 days a week
-
Currently my Adams a3 2h, it's been in my bag since it was the hot new club. Actually just retired a component sand wedge my dad and I built and ground to my specs in 1994. Little nervous about how the new wedge will go, I played my most of my life with that wedge

How often is the range open at the fore kicks in Marlboro? I'm there every Saturday, but there's 4 year olds playing soccer on every available inch of the place

Callaway Org 14 bag. No more stuff for me other than balls and tee's this year. (yeah, right) -
Time and Health. I've been as low as a 3 (18 years a go) and more recently a 7 (5 years ago) but 2 young children and all they inlvolve have robbed me of the time I once had. When my wife traveled often and I was at the range 3 days a week and played 3 rounds a week, it was slowly creeping in the right direction. I've also had some shoulder problems that have forced me to change my swing in order to keep playing. That being said, I still catch lightening in the bottle, and will get accused of being a serious sandbagger a couple of times a year. I finished last year as an 11.1, but I did have 4 rounds in the 70's, including a 75. A couple of years ago I shot 1 under in a round. I know the game is there, but I'm also dependent on muscle memory and love to practice. Biggest challenges right now: - Hitting the fairway. I probably hit 45% in the fairway, and when I miss it's usually pretty bad. Getting around this typically involves hitting a hybrid. This kills me because I see a pretty big gap in my ballstriking between a 7 and a 5 (as I'm sure everyone does) - Keeping it a draw and not a hook. as I mentioned, I had to make my swing very flat to take pressure off my shoulder, and the big, high loud fade I played my whole life turned into a low draw about 5 years ago. If I get sloppy or stop paying attention to it, the draw turns into a hook. This happens most often in drinking rounds with buddies - consistant putting - I'm streaky as hell with the putter. I've been playing an Oddysey tour prototype #8, but I'm going back to a Scotty Newport with the hope that I'm more reliable with it. Overall, it's consistency for me, and the only way I'm going to get that is to play more. Cut a deal with the wife this year that guarantee's me a practice night, a league night, and my regular Friday afternoon round, so we'll see what kind of impact it makes.

For those of you with push carts . . . .

Bought a callaway org 14 bag today. Pretty light and fits the cart well -
Favorite Irons/ Cleveland TA6 for me. What's yours?

I played Taylormade Tour Prefered blades in the 1990's that I have fond memories of. I also have a set of sweet 690 MB's that I keep around for fun. I've run through Callaway X12, Cleveland TA 5, Ping I-3, TM R7 TP, Ping Zing Berrylium (but not in that order) along with the current Mizzy JPX 800's, but my favorites are the first two. That being said, I'm picking up my new MP-54's in about an hour, so it may change -
I think Adams makes the best hybrids across the board. They seem to have a model that fits everyone, so go to a shot and hit some

I don't see myself ever carrying now that I have the wagon, so I'm thinking I'll go with the cart bag. Never had one before, the search should be fun -
If I understand this, you're going to pull the pitching wedge from your bag and replace it with a gap wedge? If you thought you had a big gap before, that's nothing like the gap between a 9 iron and a 52. I'm not sure what your end goal is here or what your challenges are on the course, but I'd much rather have a pitching wedge in my bag than a 5 wood

Interesting thread. I live in Sudbury and play Sandy burr, juniper hills, and butternut a lot. I won a blackstone card in a tournament close to thanksgiving, so I'll be playing out there a lot this year
-
I didn't get to hit that, as I'm a lefty so I often don't get to hit everything. I will say that what I did hit had an absolutely massive head. Almost too big for me, but likely why it's so forgiving
-
I'm not in the market for a driver but I had time to kill so I hit some with the Xhot 2 today. I'm not a big callaway guy, but I really liked this driver. I was hitting a 9 degree with the stock stiff shaft. It was pretty long, very forgiving, and gave me the ball flight I prefer (mid trajectory draw) if I was looking for a driver this would be near the top of the list.

I went to Golfsmith today and hit every 3W available, with no real leader. On my way out I cruised by the clearance rack and came across a TEE Trilogy on sale for $19. That's not a typo (I actually went and made sure it was priced correctly. I hit it at least as well as I did anything else, so the search is over. Once Mizuno finally sends me the clubs I actually ordered, My bag will be set for this year (Until, of course, something misbehaves, and then it's of to the shop I go)

What do you do for woods? I'm fitted as standard length and 2 flat for irons, but you can't really bend a driver

Ugh........Anyone ever had this happen?

I actually learned the game as a righty. My right handed swing is still good for winning a few bets when I'm in the hole. -
I've got the same club in a 4 wood. I like it, I just find I'm very inconsistant with it, which is unusual for me. I actually think I'm going to try re-shafting an old adams tight lies and see what happens with that. I did hit an X-hot 3 wood today that was really sweet, if I pull the trigger on something that might be it.

that's what I was thinking. I certainly expect them to get it right this time though. As it was, I was really impressed with how fast they filled a custom order. They clearly take their customer service seriously -
I currently play an R9 with the face wide open. Great off the tee, but I can't hit it off the deck. I have a 910 4 wood as well, but I have mixed results with it. I'm normally very consistant with my ball striking, so it's really frustrating.
