Bogey Golfers Only (Index 16-22) / Breaking 90 Topic
straightslice replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
Played back to back rounds. This course is par 37/35. Yesterday I went 53/44. Started front 9 horribly highlighted by a 9 on a relatively easy par 5. Recovered with +9 on back 9 ending par-par on 17-18. Today, same course, started with much promise. Went Par, par, double, par, par on first 5 holes. Thought I would blow by 90. That's what I get for thinking. Had 4 triples over next 7 holes. Took a call from the wife and everything came unglued. Ended with 5 pars, record for me, and 5 bogies. The triples killed me. 47/50 for another 97. Thought I'd at least hit my midterm goal of 95. I'm working on GIR+1. Basically always have a par putt. When I did that, bogey or par. Otherwise, not so much. Hoping to get another round on Sunday if it dries out. -

Is there an official break 90 thread? I don't see one on my search? I can break 100 but not every round. Looking for the next thread. -
Changes galore. Went from AP2 to my older SGI. Thought I needed thinner clubs. They looked great but punishing with my inconsistent swing. ARGH. Callaway Xhot 20* replacing Adams a12pro. Don't need a pro anything in my bag. Bought a Game golf because it was $120 on Amazon. Trying to make the game easier and break 90

2015 goals. 1. To break 90 by May, 85 by end of 2015. I am now in the 98-103 range. I dropped over 15 strokes my first full year trying to be getter. Getting in that 85-90 makes me better than or as good as everyone I play with on a semi regular basis. 2. Fix my driver. Gone a shot (fade/draw) and own it. 3. Multiple birdies In a round. 4. Over 5 GIR in a round

Tiger won 5 times last year. Bubba has won 6 times in his career, 2 this year. We take him for granted.

That's my assumption. Smaller sweetspot and more punishing for mishits. My game set is Callaway RAZR X HL w/ graphite shafts. The blade is a Titleist MB that I got for about $15. Just off the range. I started with the blade just to see what happened. I was surprised that I was actually able to get 4 of the first 5 in the air and reasonably towards my target. I have a new and greater respect for the professionals and scratch guys who can play blades. You have to be 100% on point with those things. I finally know what people mean by "feel". It's crystal clear when you are off center, etc. I welcomed my "shovels". Anyway, I struck the ball pretty well. One thing I learned from the blade is how a penetrating ball flight looks. My flipping was killing distance. Compressed the ball well. Let's see if I can take this to the course. -

After breaking 100 in 3 of last 6 rounds (96, 99, 99, 100, 100, 103) on mostly unfamiliar courses, I thought I had arrived. Lo and behold I go into a funk. 115, 110, 108. That sucked. After self evaluation, I realized that I haven't spent nearly enough time at the range. I was just playing and often with no warmup. Went back to the basics Saturday morning. Over 3 hour range session to replace my normal round. Almost 2 hours on the full swing (5-PW). Did not touch the driver or hybrids.30 minutes putting, 45+ mins chipping and pitching. Started off horribly with fat shots galore. Wanted to concentrate on solid contact and reduced flipping. Going for another hour to see if anything stuck. Btw. I bought a 6i blade to help focus on better contact and swing mechanics. It won't lie to me as much as my current set. Any one tried such an approach? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Got a round in today with the swarm of gnats in south GA. Scored a 99 although I had 7 penalty strokes due to a few errant shots and not knowing water was in play on certain holes/shots. The fun and danger of playing a new course. This was my 1st back to back sub-100 rounds. #EXCITED #FINALLY 5 GIRs. 4 pars. 6 bogies 5 triples. 50% fairways (only 2-3 not easily in play) In trying to implement some swing changes, I am very inconsistent with iron distance. Also starting to hit more draws and can't find my line since I'm accustomed to aligning to prevent my old pal Slice from killing me. Improving. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I am lucky to break 100. I can afford Pro Vs but can't justify them. When I buy balls, I buy the Top Flite Gamer and Gamer Tour balls. Great value for what I do. I have about 5-6 dozen Pro V that I have "collected" this year. It's amazing how many find on a typical course. They are cleaned and waiting on me to become a better striker. Thanks to all who made the Pro V the number 1 ball ... Found near lakes, trees, and OOBs. -

Good tips. Both tips, slowing down and watching shot shape, are working well for me. Still trying to move more range game to course also. -

My best round ever. 96 yesterday (Rating: 69.6, Slope: 120) in a light to slightly more than light rain shower. 46 on front and 50 on back. 3 pars, 8 bogies, 5 doubles, and 2 triples. I was going very good until I glanced at my score after hole 14. The bogie on 14 put me +16 with 4 holes to go. Predictably, I went double, triple, triple (on a par 3) on the next three holes. Hole 18 was a 2 putt par on a par 5. 71% fairways ... Did not try to crush the driver. Smooth swing and was consistently getting 245 - 260 yards and playable. 2 GIR .. I was near the green a few times. I couldn't get the distance on my approach shot. My flipping came back and I was launching moon shots everywhere. Clean contact but distance loss. 1.8 putts per hole, 33 total. Very good day putting in a while. My chipping was better and giving much shorter putts. 2 penalties. Into the water on the par 3 17th and 1 OOB. 3rd time breaking 100. Still looking for that elusive back to back. The range time is really paying off. My ball striking was much better. Consistent distance and flipping wrists were issues. I only recall hitting 2 fat shots. Off to the range tomorrow. Trying to get continue with 3 sessions per week. Worked out well last week. -

In assessing the current state of my game, I thought I was playing too much. Sounds strange to say that. I'm pushing myself to get more time at the range before my next 18 (hopefully this Saturday). My big misses are fat shots and RIGHT (push, push slice, and straight slice) and struggle to get anything to move straight or left. I am not consistent in releasing the club. I took a lesson 2 weeks ago and was given a few drills/tips. The guy basically said to over-exaggerate the motions to make the ball go left. I didn't put in enough time to groove a swing and results were worse than before. Monday: 2 hour session. Focusing on ball striking and hitting the ball straight or left. Took things really slow. Used a CamDaddy to film swings and tried to correct the obvious flaws. Several "coaches in training" wanted to give all types of advice and tips against my wishes. I eventually started to hit straight and slight draw shots with the irons. Best session ever. Tuesday morning (today): another 2 hour session. Spent about 45 minutes chipping. Most chipping I had ever practiced. I was able to hit chips that roll out or land softly. I can't wait to try to this on the course. I'm so afraid to chip, I usually opt to putt anywhere near the green regardless of length, rough, etc. That should change in my next round. Spent the remaining time on the full swing (SW to 7i) continuing my progress from Monday. I have been hitting the ball a little cleaner the last few days. No nearly as mainly fat shots. I've been hitting off mats the last 2 days. Hopefully, I am able to hit off the ground as things dry out. I will probably take a day off. I'm a little sore and I don't want to hurt something. -
Wow. This thread took a serious turn that I didn't see coming.

I think I have created a golfer. My guy has the bug. He bought a used set of Mizuno clubs and a bag recently. He has been hitting the range 2-3 times a week. We actually put up a 120 last weekend. He hit a green in regulation and you'd think it was a hole in 1. I got a feeling he will get better at a much faster pace than me.

How long were you playing until you broke 100?
straightslice replied to MattyMFC's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Still on the Break 100 grind as well. About a year now. 6 months of heavy play not counting the back spasms. -
For Level 2, I introduced B. Williams to golf late last year. I gave him my beginner set of clubs and have taken him to the range about 5 times and encouraged him to swing by for 30 minutes or so after work 1-2 times a week. We have played 4 rounds together. He has the bug and help my addiction to golf get even. I am still much better, although I haven't broken 100 yet, but we find ways to keep it competitive. I also have my nephew coming along. He's 18 and never played golf before. He uses my clubs at the range. 2 visits in. He will get my beginner set in another month or so when B. Williams has bought his 1st "mildly used" new set.
