1. Most of my problems are of this sort, indeed.
2. I might just need to get one of those clubs. Yesterday I was about 190 out on a reachable Par 5, pulled my 3i into a row of houses from a perfect fairway lie. I can hit that 3i all day from the rough, but that fairway lie is a problem.
3. Keep me posted on how this is working for you. I just started this program this week. The app and workout are simple and straightforward. Looking forward to seeing results.
4. Nearly had a Caddyshack moment last night. Went out for a quick nine after work, had 2 hours before darkness, walking. Parred the first two holes! In the third fairway a ranger comes up and says storms are coming and drives me back for a rain check. Glad he did. Would've been a mile from the clubhouse when the storm hit with a long, wet walk back. Now, if I would've been even par at that point I might've just pushed through and hoped the heavy stuff didn't come through.
5. I am new here and could be wrong. But I thought the grill room was for non golf topics. Might get better responses in the equipment section.
6. Men hanging out with other men, without women present, is great for male emotional health. The opportunities to do so have dwindled over the past 50 years. There is nothing exclusionary about a private club of men wanting it to be as such.
7. Did you have a busy weekend?
8. When I saw the title of this thread, being in the "off-topic" section, I thought we were going really off-topic. Whew. Glad you are talking about golf shafts. Sorry, I cannot help with the question though.
9. This was a Saturday morning at a busy course, they may have done it to speed pace of play. It was definitely noticeable as there was clearly a teeing area meant for each tee, but the white and black were on the forward area for many holes, with an empty tee area 30+ yds back.
I would not post the score as is. You would be hurting yourself and giving yourself a lower differential than you deserve. The USGA Handicap manual has adjustments for yardage differences from what a rated tee is suppose to be. If you feel 400 yards is a reasonable estimate as to the difference between the Black tees and the tees you played you can subtract 1.8 from the rating and 4 from the slope and post your score with the new slope and rating. Not sure on the software you are using to post, but you probably would have to post it as an away score and manually enter the rating and slop below. So 69.1 and 122. See chart at bottom. http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Handicap-System-Manual/Rule-05/
Thank you for this. This is probably the right way to record the score. Next time I'll track the yardage diff a little more carefully.
10. Played a course this weekend with the following tees/ratings: Black - 70.9/126 - 6,408yds White - 68.0/117 - 5,791yds I usually try to play the tees in the 6,200 range, but since the whites were so short we decided to play the Blacks . Once we started playing we found that the Black tee markers on every hole were only a few yards behind the Whites. 420 yard holes were playing about 370, etc. This was consistent across the entire round. I would guess the Blacks played about 6,000 yds for the round, at most. It looked like maybe they were doing maintenace toward the back half of the tee areas and had pushed everything forward. My question is this, would I still record my score for handicap purposes using the Black rating? It doesn't seem fair to give myself the Black rating when the course played much closer to the White difficulty. Or do I just use the rating for the tees that I played, despite the disconnect between the scorecard and the actual yardage? I am guessing I log the Black rating, but has anyone else encountered something like this?
11. I am absolutely fascinated by this thread. Thanks for posting. Glad to see business is steady enough to keep the doors open. Nice work.
12. I have always had a fairly strong short game. I use a very basic pitch shot most of the time that I was taught by a club pro when I was about 11. It works consistently well, nothing fancy, it gets the job done. I took a few years off the game and the short game came right back to me, but the full swing was a mess. I was not breaking 100. I have been slowly fixing the long game and my score is consistently dropping through the 90s. Not practicing short game at all. My advice, simplify your short game, lock it in, then move on to practicing more of the full swings, that is where strokes can be saved in bulk.
13. ^^This - completely out of self-interest.
14. About 20+ years ago, as a kid, I played with my Dad and uncle at a local muni executive course on a Saturday afternoon. I distinctly remember walking off the course after 13 holes and it had already been 4+ hours. Would easily have been 6+ hours to play the full 18. Come to think of it, experiences like that could easily ruin the perception of a new/younger golfer, and it is exactly these courses that they usually start on.
15. This is an old thread, but thought I'd revive it as opposed to starting a new one. I have been playing 845 Silver Scot irons for 15 years now. Spent every dollar I had as a 19-year-old on those irons. I can't imagine I would see a major improvement in my game with newer irons, so I am sticking with these old friends for now. I get comments on the course all the time about them.
16. New to the forum, but this looks like I'll be working my way through this thread for a while. I am in the midst of a major swing change that I started this Spring. I am 34, but back when I was 19 or 20 I was a single digit hdcp with what I'd call a modified baseball swing (weight on back foot all the time). It wasn't pretty, but it worked enough to score well. After a few years away from the game (young kids), I am hooked again, but this time trying to do it the "right" way. It has been frustrating though. I am a 22 hdcp right now trying the new swing. A few rounds I have just said screw it and went back to my old ways and broke 90 each time. I know the upside is greater if I stick with the swing changes but sometimes I am tempted to just go back to what I was doing. I am sticking with it for now. Off to the range to work on getting the weight forward at impact.
17. Honestly, I don't know enough about golf balls to answer this accurately. The golf pro described them as the same ball the Tour pros played back in the 90's when they were called Top Flite Strata. They felt soft to me, but had good distance off the driver. Didn't feel as nice as the Maxfli U3s I was playing, but much better price.
18. Thanks! Downriver / Monroe area just South of Detroit.
19. Local golf pro suggested the Strata Tour Advanced golf ball. Basically has become the "value" ball in the Callaway line, but is every bit as good as the NXT Tour, etc. Got a dozen for $13. They were buried in the back of the store as Callaway does not want them displayed with their front line balls. I played a round with them last week and really enjoyed the feel off the driver and putter. They didn't have a ton of bite on the greens, but played well for my bump and run style.
20. Tax Accountant for a utility company ...
21. Long-time / First-time. I've been reading this site so much I feel like I know everyone personally. Figured it was time to quit lurking and join in the coversation. -Mark
