  1. Bridgestone e-series (e6+ in particular) have worked well for me this winter. I normally use a Titleist proV1x because you only live once. I got the bridgestone from a garage sale new in the box. While they are supposed to limit side spin to add control. They are not a cure for a bad slice or hook. You will not be able to work the ball like you would with a ProV or other tour type ball, but you can hit a draw or fade with one. They are pleasing off the wedge and you can get them to stop on the green pretty well. I have an Odyssey insert putter and I have a hard time feeling the difference between a $4 ball and any ball softer than a range rock so I can't really say how soft it is off the flat stick.
  2. I would have to say lack of daylight savings time. I like to golf in the afternoon after work. My course offers a player development ($40/month) plan with unliminted range balls a weekly clinic and all the golf you can play after 4:00 each day for $10. I get out of the cube jungle at 5:00pm an during the winter I might be able to hit a large bucket before it gets dark. After March 8th I will be out there everyday for at last 9 holes.
  3. I have love/hate feelings for Boo Weekly. Would be great to have a beer with. Gives TV guys something to talk and laugh about and plays pretty dang well for someone who has only been playing a few years. But I just can't bring myself to really like someone who goes out of their way to say how they are just playing for the money. He doesn't care about winning majors or what he can give to the game. Pretty much just wants to make enough to hunt and fish on his own land. I love to hunt and fish as well but I also shell out my hard earned $ to play golf and buy golf stuff and when I can go watch golf. It's cool he fought a monkey it's cool he rode his driver down the fairway it's cool he wears camo because he can. It is not cool that he has that much raw talent and ability and acts like "aw shucks it's just golf" on the way to sign a check for 10th place that is more than I make in a year. I would give up just about anything to be able to play as well as he does. And if I could and I was making millions you had better believe that I would sing golf's praises even if I didn't like it
  4. You could pull a Tin Cup and just take a 7i and a putter for the round but you are leaving yourself at a disadvantage. Most courses are set up so that you have to use a number of clubs with the correct loft and length to obtain a satisfactory score. I would recommend two different approaches First would be some range time. Find out your distance for each club in your bag. Then don't practice with every club just grab one short iron, a mid iron, a long iron, a fairwaywood/ hybrid and a driver. Concentrate on making the correct swing for each sub set of clubs. Once you have you swing grooved in it won't matter if it is an 8i or a 7i just select the correct club for the distance and swing. Good things will happen. Second if you are going to take clubs out of the bag to take away the temptaion to use them take out the driver, 2i/3i, Lob and sandwedges. It is my experience that these clubs, while not impossible to master, cause the majority of high scores. The set up and swing for my driver differs more for than the rest of my clubs (also only club with a graphite shaft) it goes the farthest and is the easiest to lose control of and spray people in the other fairway. Use a FWwood or hybrid off the tee and just keep it in the short grass The Sand and Lob wedges and specialty clubs that better players can use to hit specailty shots. Some even make these there go to short game clubs but for the majority of 3 digit golfers they are going to cause trouble you don't need yet. The standard PW that came with your set is enough to get you to the low 90's. Then you can add these clubs back when the main part of your game is solid. Hope that helps because I went through the same thing. The instant I took out my driver and wedges my scores improved. I am just now adding back in my Driver and a SW with the hopes I can keep it together. If not back in the closet they will go.
  5. I have a 904F 4 wood and I go it for less than $30 and I couldn't be happier there are newer models and if money isn't a issue go wild but there is great equipment out there for rock bottom prices
  6. My PW is 48 GW 52 SW 56 I am fighting off the urge to purchase a lob wedge. I don't lose many strokes around the green(20yds or less), I find an open SW does what I need it to in a normal round. However this leaves me with a 3/4 or 1/2 SW into greens that I am tending to over shoot or under shoot. Who thinks it is worth it to pick up a 60 LW just for approach shots of 70-40yds??
  7. I just got my Titleist 690 CB off of eaby today. Went to the range and fell in love. $174 shipped. They were closer to 7.5/10 than the 8.5/10 as advertised so I am going to keep an eye out and buy another set in better condition so when these are gone I will have another set ready.
  8. I got $400 in Christmas cash and $100 Gift card to a golf shop in town. (A good portion came in early as my family lives all over and money filled cards are the order of the day) :) Spent nearly 10 hours in every golf store and range in town trying to find out what I needed first and what I wanted second. Everyone likes brand new clubs with the latest technology but you do not have to spend a ton of $ to get quality gear. I traded my Nickent 3dx square for a used Ping G5 driver +$10 Traded my Adams redline 3,4, and 7woods in for Titleist 904F 15* and 19* woods (with TTDG S300 steel shafts) +$20 Bought a used set of Titleist 690 CB forged irons (with TTDG S300 steel shafts) for $175 Traded my older used and abused Cleveland CG10 wedges for used but newer Titleist Vokey spin milled 52* and 56* (with TTDG S300 steel shafts)+$40 Bought a Ping Anser 3 putter 35" for $35 Traded a Odyssey white hot XG #2 putter and used my gift card +$50 to get a new Titleist 9" staff bag and get all my new to me clubs regipped (lamkin crossline and a Pingman for the putter) In all I spent $330 and the $100 gift card and I got gear that was in perfect or near perfect playing conditon and a much better fit to my evolving game than my older stuff. Had I refused to buy used I would have had trouble finding a set of new knock off clubs for that price. Times are tough save money for trips to the range and greens fees
