  1. Very nice! Although your age is increasing your handicap will be dropping! Happy Birthday!
  2. Brings to mind this thread.... http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthr...ghlight=labels Cheap Insurance.
  3. If you do it yourself, you can find a cheap pullout shaft for less than $20. Maybe your dented driver shaft will fit? If that's the case, your materials will be less than $5. If you have a torch and some epoxy, it should take even a novice about 20 minutes. There are how to videos on Youtube. Just make sure the shaft diameter matches the clubhead, and get a replacement ferrule. Good idea? Depends. But there's no reason why it can't be done.
  4. Agreed. (with the drinks part)
  5. Way back in the day, I used to go out as a twosome quite a bit with my buddy. Since we always caught up to other groups, in order to slow the pace down, we would play "The Presidents Ball". It was just an alternate shot, he would tee off, I would hit next, etc until holed. I would tee off the Presidents ball only every other hole, he was tee ball President the other holes. The President would always hit last off the tee. There were days when the Presidents score would kick both our butts!
  6. Dicks usually has coupons in the Entertainment book for $15 off $75.
  7. I read that as his 60 is the shortest (i.e. smallest) club, not necessarily the one that sends the ball the least distance. One of us is right...

  9. I can show him about 500 examples where that's not the case. Like it or not, trees can be placed anywhere at just about any height, with just about any trim level of the branches. Fair? Maybe not. Within the "rules"? Absolutely. You'll find many wide open courses that offer the tree free environment you prefer. Should they all be like that? What fun would that be? How about the courses that have bushes for the 150 marker? It's not a tree, but if your ball goes in it, your shot is still restricted. Play it where it lies, as it lies, regardless of any natural obstructions. Get creative with your escapes. It'll be OK.
  10. Trees are as much a part of the game as bunkers or water hazards. I can't tell you the number of times I've been behind/under them. I think the worse are the ones that restrict the backswing. Some of my "best" drives have put me in the worst places. I like posting a nice score after getting stymied by an obstruction. Don't get mad, just accept the lumps and know it happens to everyone, not just you. It's just the way it goes in this game. You should get one of these for next time....
  11. Ouch is right! I LIKE THAT GAME! Question: If team A gets an Eagle and a Birdie is Team B's score flipped AND doubled???
  12. Between the first and second half of our league we have a "Two Club And A Putter" day. We had to change the name from the "3 club day" just so people wouldn't putt with their other clubs. It's amazing how creative you can get when limited to just 2 clubs. Choke downs, punch shots & grounders are all in play. The most surprising thing is that most guys shoot within 3-4 shots of their normal (9 hole) scores. The league plays just for skins that day, no standings or matches are at risk. All of the 18 hole side bets remain intact. Last year I used a 7 wood and a 9 iron. I found out I can hit either club 160 yards when I have to! The guy shot the best score used a driver and a wedge. I love the game, it forces you to use your head and create shots.
  13. Grinding the sole will reduce the bounce, not add to it... You could try bending the club. For every degree you add to the loft of the face, you will increase the bounce by an equal amount. Or, buy a new/used sand wedge with more bounce.
  14. I've done that several times with thrift shop finds. Best percentage I ever did was a $2 HP15C calculator, I Ebayed it for $268 (plus shipping)
  15. That could be IS the best ball mark repair primer I've ever seen! Kudos to your pro for putting it together. I hope he won't mind me linking it and sending it out! Sticky that will ya!
  16. Where to start? I mean really, what's not to like.... I like the feel of golf things. I like the feel of a new glove, a regripped club, soft fairway grass cushioning my walk, sweet spot hits, fluffy sand shots, and especially making the ball go where I aimed. Golf is indeed a game of feel and there is so much nice to feel. I love the ride to the course. I look around at everyone else on the road and I smile to myself that no matter where they are heading at that moment, I've got them all beat. I'm going golfing. I smile at them and they wonder what I'm so happy about so early in the morning. If only they knew. Eat your hearts out. I like the anticipation of that first swing. We golfers delude ourselves into thinking that today is the day we put it all together. We've ironed out the kinks that sabotaged our last round and we can't wait to test our new swing keys. The drives will be straight, the irons flush, and the putts true. And we will continue to believe this until reality smacks us right smack in the face sometimes as soon as the first tee shot that snap hooks out of bounds or leaks way right into the woods. But again, who cares? The next hole will be different. Its just a momentary set back until we hit that career shot that will bring us back again and again.
  17. Cripe, I don't do that much when I get there early!!
  18. If you're like me when weather seems iffy, you like to track the weather patterns to see how wet you might get. I've looked at lots of Doppler radar sites from the local news stations, the weather channel and similar sources. I think that this one here is the best for my golf needs. http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/centgrtlakes_loop.php I like it because it's a 4-600 mile range and it loops so you can see the pattern of any up coming rain. Although it's not "real time" it updates quite frequently so it's pretty close to real time. Also, the site loads fast. The country is broken into 12 segments so you can bookmark the one that's most relevant for you. The segment linked above is the one I use. There is also a drop down menu on the left if you want a closer zoom. Thought you might want to bookmark it for future use.
  19. Agreed. About the only time I will ever change a ball type is in a scramble event. I'll use a distance rock on the drives and go back to a ProV1 for all the approaches. Other than that, I don't switch out balls. I think doing so would just add another layer of doubt to an already confusing game. Scrambles, charities and driving ranges allow me to use up all those "gift" balls from well meaning non golfers.
  20. Ah Alcoma, it's name was derived from the AL legheny CO unty MA sons, they built it "back in the day". Think about it, who knows more about golf course design than a bunch of bricklayers?? When I was growing up, it was a country club, I drove by it often wishing I could someday play it. I finally got my chance when a member invited me to play it with him. Like they say, be careful what you wish for... Now it's a public track and the conditions have worsened. I go to an "event" there annually, my team is the defending champs so I guess we have to return in 09. The pool has been paved over, the food sucks and there is no driving range. I can't wait!
  21. Hi George. You should check out the leagues at the courses you're interested in. They have most of the afternoon tee times locked. If you're looking to just walk on during the week. Check out North Park, they'll be glad to hook you up with someone.
  22. [QUOTE=ramrockgolfer35;308033 Does it matter or do I need to match the 900s with a 56*?[/QUOTE] I don't think it matters. Use what works best for you. Except for my irons, I don't have two clubs that even look alike in my bag and it took me a while to get to that point. Although all my wedges are Vokeys, I have an oil can finish, a raw and a chrome. One is a spin milled, one has a custom grind, one has been bent..
  23. If the case won't stay closed without using the manufacturer's non compliant lock, you can't use the bag. Maybe call the manufacturer, perhaps there's a TSA compliant fix available. If you try to lock and use the bag, TSA will break the lock, and if the bag really won't stay closed unless locked, your clubs could be "lost". There is a 100% chance of the TSA opening your golf bag. I have flown with my sticks about 30 times since 9/11, they've been opened every time. Could you borrow a bag from someone?
  24. Look, for those of you who choose to not play by the rules, or only those rules you feel are fair, or your personal interpretation of the rules, or any method you choose of keeping your score, I say... Hey, it's your world. I think most of the posters in this thread who oppose some/all of the rules are either relatively new to the game, and/or just play with one or two other people who share their views on mulligans, do-overs, pick-ups, etc. I've seen these guys on the course, as a matter of fact, they are probably the majority of the recreational golfers on the planet. I once saw a guy put a tee under his ball in a fairway BUNKER! We were playing a parallel hole, he hit off the teed up bunker ball and it got on the green and he said to his buddies "How about THAT shot!?!" Was he cheating? In his world, it was a great shot. Ya know what? He was having a wonderful time! Whenever the rest of us play ("us" being the guys who choose to abide by all the rules) we choose to not tee up the ball in the bunker. On Thursdays and Saturdays I play with between 12-30 other like minded players. I have side bets with most of them. Now since 30somes are usually frowned upon by most golf courses these fellow competitors are off on another hole and I'm not watching each and every stroke. Nor, are they watching mine. I know that whenever I'm paying a bet to a guy who beat me by one shot a side, that I was really beat. I'm sure he didn't take a mulligan, pick up a putt or do any of the other make-the-game-easier things that have been proposed here in the prior posts. How do I know this? Because he, like me, chooses to play not by "our" rules, but "the" rules. I could pick a stranger from these boards who plays by the same universal rules as I do, compare handicaps, work out the strokes and have a fair and equitable bet. I find that the ones who do choose to abide by the rules are the ones who would rather pay for an honest loss than get paid for a dishonest win. From my personal experience, these guys are usually the most fun to play golf with too! Now, is that better than your world? Maybe not. But if you stick with this sport long enough, your playing partner world will be bigger than the 2 or 3 chums you now tee re-tee it up with. When that happens and you play a guy with the same "handicap" as you, but now you're forced to make the putt, play the shank, and play it down. You'll get smoked. You see the rules are not made to make the game hard, they are in place to make the game fair. By the way, just because we're abiding by the rules does not mean we're not having a blast! Hopefully, one day you'll understand. If not...Hey, it's your world.
