Anyone played Pebble in the last few weeks?
65withatriple replied to 65withatriple's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
The NCGA specials I believe expired in March. I was looking into joining because we are playing Pasatiempo, Spy Glass, and Spanish Bay which all had specials that ended in March. Could have saved a bunch of money had they lasted another month. -
Playing Pebble next Thursday and was wondering if the setup will already be trending toward the US Open style with narrow fairways and longer than usual rough. Not sure which I would rather play......US Open Style, which would make me appreciate the difficulty more while watching or standard which would make it easier to score well. Guess it really doesn't matter, its still Pebble. I really have no scoring expectations, don't want to blow up and be pissed all day, so I'm just going to play and enjoy the scenery.

Here we go again!!! Everytime there is a thread like this there are numerous posts about practicing 10 hours a day and you can "make it". If you don't have the natural ability, which you may, 1 million hours of practice will not help. If your 34 and your best score is 70 I would guess its probably not going to happen. I really don't think people understand how good professional golfers are. The guys on the Nationwide are really, really, really good. Other posters who said to start locally and become the best are correct. If you can't beat everyone in your city then you definitely can't beat the pros. I am in no way telling you not to dream or you can't do it. It's good to dream big, but the reality is many dreams don't come true. Good luck and prove me wrong!

I bet you have become good at not meeting your expectations.

How often do you change your grips?
65withatriple replied to mrprovisional's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Just a little tip I have learned over the years when your grips get slippery.......If you will scrub them with 409 or almost any kitchen cleaning product it will bring back the tackiness. Works great and will help get more life out of your grips. -
The part where you said.....and can be taught......kinda proves my point. Because you agree that not everyone can be taught. I love a good argument.......I really enjoy reading and hearing other opinions even if they are quite different than mine.
-
We will just have to agree to disagree because to me thats all it implies. If "anyone"....which is the key word IMHO..... can practice a certain amount to become the best at something implies that practice is all it takes. And how does it not imply that talent and natural ability do not matter when saying "anyone who practices enough can become pro"? I don't see talent or natural ability in the statement but I do see practice. The point is if they thought with talent and natural abilty and enough practice anyone could become pro it would be a totally different argument. The threads I read to make this post are 100% saying that practice is the only ingredient needed. I understand your point and maybe if I had not read the numerous threads about this subject on this forum I would agree with you. But if you will search you will find many have the opinion that practice is all it takes for anyone to become "pro".
-
My points are arguing with someone saying if I practiced enough I could be pro. So with that I conclude that they are saying only practice matters. If only practice matters then all the statements I made would be true. You can argue all you want......I am not a professional writer and may not be able to convey in the exact words for you to understand my point but I believe it is clear enough for most.
-
Sure they do......if its all about the amount of practice then all pertain to the statement.
-
I have seen several threads and comments to threads where someone will say...."with enough practice anyone can become a pro golfer". For some reason that aggravates me. Here is my argument: If that were true: 1. All PGA Tour players would be the ones that practiced the most out of every golfer alive.....not true. 2. The best pro golfer would be the one that practiced the most......not true. 3. With equal amount of practice everyone would be equally talented.....not true. I could go on.....bottom line is you can't simply pick a skill and decide I'm going to practice until I'm one of the best 150 in the world at it. That will only happen for the best 150 out of everyone who tries. You can definitely get good at something you love and dedicate time to but to say you can become one of the best in the world is foolish. It happens for only a small percentage of all of the thousands that work, and practice as much as the guys on the PGA Tour. Am I crazy because I seem to be in the minority from past threads?
-
Not everyone can practice enough to become a pro golfer. For every one PGA Tour pro there 500 wanting to get there who are working just as hard and putting in just as many hours. Of course everyone there has to put the work in....some much more than others. Just the same as not everyone can get to scratch. I'm sorry but I know too many guys who work their ass off on the mini tours and just never get there. Pretty arrogant to think that anyone can reach the top 150 or so in the world at anything with something so simple as just practicing. If that were true then the one who practiced the most would be the best and we all know thats almost never the case.

[QUOTE=Randy4h;426262]From a purely physical standpoint, we can never strike the ball as a tour player. However, we could become as good a chipper or pitcher of the ball, as that does not require the pure physical skill that a full shot does. With enough correct practice, it could happen. Now, have I ever seen someone who has a tour quality short game? No. But it is physically possible. I can strike it as good as a tour player. I can hit some amazing shots. Physically I can do almost anything they can. Its the mental gift they have and the quality of their misshits that seperates us. You rarely ever see a pro really miss a shot...i.e...top, shank etc. They do, but very rarely. I can still have some pretty terrible misshits. Just my opinion.

Thats why I always say make little changes over time in the direction you want to improve. Its very difficult to make a big change but if you do a little bit here and there over time you can still enjoy the game while improving. Golf is hard!

I think anywhere along the Southern US coast will be good weather wise and have plenty of courses to play. Hoseshoe Bay is a great option as stated above. I went to Hilton Head last summer, played Harbour Town, The Ocean Course, and 2 other that I can't remember the names. It was very affordable. I think Sawgrass would be great too. As long as your playing golf I dont think you can go wrong. Hope you have a great trip.

Here is my problem......I love golf and happen to be BALD. I need advice on head wear. South Texas summers cause me to sweat and with no hair to absorb the sweat I constantly ruin all head wear. I love wearing baseball caps but hate the tan line around the back of my head. I put on sunscreen but that does not help much. I have tried bucket hats, which I like but that does not solve the sweat problem. Is there a beanie type product I could wear under my hat to absorb sweat. Does anyone have suggestions from things they have tried. Not the worst problem to have but I could sure use some advice. I currently buy 2 of every hat, one for the round, and one for before and after. Being a head sweater and bald sucks!!!!!!!!!

Drawing everything but the driver
65withatriple replied to jrm1493's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I had a similar problem a few years ago. Could work a draw, which is my normal ball flight, with ease with every club but the driver. I would try to duck hook the driver just to hit a small fade. I had to to reshaft my driver. Had a stiff shaft which I had used my entire life but all of a sudden it was too weak. Stronger shaft fixed the problem immediately. You may have a different problem all together but worth a look if it continues. -
When I was younger I thought about it. At that time I needed to make a little more $ than they paid starting out. Now I don't like the hours required or working on weekends. I think it is a great career, just not for me, and I wish you luck in reaching your dream.

Is Pebble Beach Worth $495 (or $550 in 2019)?
65withatriple replied to neophyte's topic in Golf Talk
The truth is she is more or less paying for the trip. I'm a school teacher and shes a M.D. I married very well in more ways than one. When the trip was first introduced to me I took the cost to her to see what she thought. I told her total trip was a little over 3k and I received a great answer. "That's not to bad, I thought it would be more." I knew I was in. She really is an awesome woman whom I am very fortunate to know. I'm pretty sure I would be going on this trip either way.......I wasnt always a school teacher. -

65withatriple replied to neophyte's topic in Golf Talk
To answer the question....yes. Course is booked months in advance so it has to be. If it was not worth it they would not be able to fill the tee times. Thats the bottom line answer. It may not be worth it to everyone but they don't price it for everyone. When they quit filling tee times the price will come down of remain the same, until then thats the going rate! I just booked a trip to Pebble. We are playing Pasatiempo, Pebble, Spy Glass, Spanish Bay, and Corde Valle. The total trip with airfare, lodging, rental car, etc.....is $3200. Only additional costs will be food and drink, and caddie fees. Its going to be a great trip with 7 great friends. -
I say go for it. I'm 35 and wish I would have tried a harder to do more with my game. But there is one thing I totally disagree with that you said: Thats not even close to being the case although that really has nothing to do with your situation. Work hard and who knows how good you can get.

Pebble Beach Trip Do's and Dont's
65withatriple replied to 65withatriple's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Thanks for all the advice. Will definitely come in handy. . -
Booked a trip to Pebbel beach in April. I will be playing Pasatiempo, Pebble, Spy Glass, Spanish Bay, and Corde Valle. I would love any advice on things people have done or wished they have done while they were there that could make this trip better. I know we are missing out on Poppy Hills, may try to squeeze 36 in one day to play it as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ohhhh.....we are a party of 8 guys if that makes a difference.

Mines has to be up there with the best. Not only does she allow me to play pretty much as often as I want, she more or less funds my addiction. She is a M.D. and I am a teacher. We took a golf vaca to Hilton Head last summer and I just booked a trip to Pebble for April. April is a guys only trip. I must say she may be the coolest chic ever, not only about golf.

With enough practice can anybody become a pro?
65withatriple replied to James_Black's topic in Golf Talk
I think some people assume because there is no running, jumping, or throwing in golf that anyone can master it. Its just not the case. The PGA Tour Pros are the best of the best. They may not look like superior athletes, because golf does not require it, but they are. They have the extra something that others who aspire to be on their level don't. I'm sure they can't tell you what it is.....they have it. I'm sure they will say practice and hardwork......but others who cannot make it have given the same amount of time if not more to the game. You can get better at anything with practice......you can't become elite at anything without the necessary skill sets required. I have played golf my entire life and have become pretty good. I shot under par 7 consecutive rounds this summer on 4 different golf courses......I am not even close to being good enough to be successful on the Hooters Tour much less the Nationwide or PGA Tour. If your question would have been....Can anyone with the proper mindset and physical attributes practice hard enough to play professional golf???? I would have answered maybe.......but anyone??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
