With enough practice can anybody become a pro?

I am saying not everyone can practice their way on to the PGA Tour. You could.....but not anyone. Takes something extra. -

NOOOOOOO! How many golfers have you seen who play and practice all the time and can't even shoot in the 70's. I've played with guys who have been coached by some of the best since childhood and really wanted to play competitive golf and never shot in the 60's. On the other hand one of my friends picked up a club for the first time as a freshman in high school and shot 68 at state his senior year. He is the type who could have made it! All others need to stick to recreational golf. -
Hitting Down on the ball with Longer Irons

I never said you shouldnt take a divot....to me smaller is better. I dont see many 3 iron shots from quality golfers that take a hugh divot. A small one yes. -
Hitting Down on the ball with Longer Irons
65withatriple replied to HookEmHorns's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I do see some pros, definitely not all taking big divots and I do at times also. If your trying to put a bunch of spin on a short iron hitting down on it creating a big divot is the way to go. I get myself in a lot of trouble by spinning the ball too much. Im not making an argument against divots, but when Im hitting my wedges bad my divots are HUGH!!! PS....I play with several scratch golfers who dont make much of a divot at all. -
Hitting Down on the ball with Longer Irons
65withatriple replied to HookEmHorns's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Just hit the little ball first. If you making contact with the golf ball before the earth its should be solid contact. I dont think its good advice to hit down on long irons. More like a 3 wood. I agree with TN94z, sweep more than down. I think high handi players who concentrate on hitting down tend to jab straight down and not follow through. Just remember to hit the little ball first and make solid contact. There is a new trend where many pros are trying to take small divots. It may not even be that new but its much easier to be consistant picking the ball than it is to hit down on it creating a bunch of spin. Just my thoughs! -
Shanking even with Path Pro
65withatriple replied to albatross's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I have heard hundreds of tips on how to get rid of the shanks. I think different tips work for different people. The only one that has ever helped me is to keep my head still and make sure its not moving toward the ball when I swing. I found my head was moving toward the ball when I got the shanks. Again it may not work for you but its definitely worth trying. -
Skeptical of reported distances
65withatriple replied to chspeed's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I think its funny that people think that pros hit it further than ams. The average 5 handi. and under distances are probably close to the average pro. Some ams can hit it farther than many pros just as some weekend softball players can hammer a softball. Hes not a pro but can hit the ball as far as a pro baseball player. Most pros dont swing at 100% often and many ams do. Just because a pro can hit it 290 yds. dosent mean that you cant because your not on tour. I agree if you have a 15 handi your probably not averaging 290 off the tee but many can hit the occasional 290 yard drive. I play with many golfers who are not close to being pros but can avearge 280 plus on any given day. Thats a fact! Hitting the ball far isnt what makes a golfer good, its hitting it where you intented to hit it. -
Im not as schooled on this subjuct as others Im sure...but I think you can control spin more with shafts than clubheads. May want to look into a stiffer shaft. That will help with traj. and spin.

Im a member at 2 courses. The private CC is free to me :) Its a benefit from my wifes company. Think it is 3k to 4k initiation and $350 a month. The other is the local muni and its $450 a year. Not a bad set up.

I dont think anyone is arguing that cavity back irons are more forgiving. I think we all understand that. I dont care what the golf channel or any commercial says...and I rarely see them advertising for blades anyway. But for you to say that anyone who uses blades is hurting their score is just crazy. The BEST GOLFER IN THE WORLD uses blades. If you were correct the best golfer would be using a more forgiving iron. Your argument has just been proven wrong!
-
Hitting a ball short dosent mean that if he hit a cavity back it would have been better. Hitting a heavy shot or hitting in "fat" cant be helped by a club head. I bet the ball still hit the center of the club face. As I stated before you have a valid point but cavity back irons wouldnt make Tiger or Phil better. If they did both would be using them. I bet both have forgotten more about golf clubs than you know!!!

I agree with you...kinda. He may miss in once in a while but 20% of the time, NO WAY. Maybe 1 out of 100. I dont miss the sweet spot 1 out of 5 times and every player on tour does much better than that. I dont disagree that forgiving clubs will help the vast majority of golfers and I kinda smirk when I see a 15 handicapper hitting blades, but to each their own. If the 2 best players in the world hit blades how can you argue against them. At least when you get to their level.
-
Wow!!! I know a few pros personally who play blades and could choose cavity back of they wanted. Most brands have both. If a blade "feels and flies" (according to you) best for them, thats what they will play. Apparently their are other tour club fitters who disagree with you or there wouldnt be any blades on tour. I dont know many 9 hadnicappers whose miss hits are 10ft. from anything but the green.
-
Do you honestly believe that???? They play golf for a living and are choosing equipment that isnt the best for them??? I know they are paid to play a brand but can choose any model and if they choose a blade I think thats whats best for them. Kinda of arrogant to think you know more about whats best for their game than them dont you think?
-
I agree...both are very good clubs. The one difference I notice in apperance is the Cleveland seem to have a larger face than the Vokeys. If you like the look of one over the other I would choose that one. As far as the bounce goes do your research and choose accordingly. If your course has tight fairways go with a lower bounce. I like low bounce personally, but it fits my swing. IMO you cant go wrong with either brand.

Nickent 4dx.....Great driver and can get one almost new for around $100. I have been a Titleist guy for years and I personally think its as good if not better.
-
If your thinking were correct the hardest worker would always be the best at their skill or trade. Everyone who has ever competed knows this is rarely the case.
-
Not sure what your point is......I guess you think you could practice your way on tour as well. Its possible, maybe even for you.....but not for everyone.
-
Its life my friend. I didnt make them this way. Im sure your an honest hard working good person......but Ill tell you the parents of the children I teach love me and couldnt find anyone to do a better job. You have very positive outlook, which is good, but your view is so out of touch its hard to believe. I think its a neat idea that any kid can do or become anything. But until you have dealt with as many kids, coached and taught as I have it will continue to be only a neat idea....not a reality. I will never tell them they "cant" but deep down I know the truth.
-
You cant use appearance in golf as you do other more physical sports. John Daly is a great athalete that dosent need to run or jump in his sport. Hes still a great golfer, or was. And were talking about "mastery" or becoming a "pro", not simply getting better or becoming good.
-
Your opinion in no where close to reality. I teach kids everyday that could study 10 hours a day and could never get through any college. Kids are either born intelligent or not. Just because some get better educations dosent mean they are any more or less intelligent. Their ability to learn is given to them genetically by there parents and there is nothing you can do to change it. Another ex......We are born with either fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers. There isnt a world class sprinter alive with predominately slow twitch muscles nor is there a world class marathoner with predominately quick twitch. You cant be both!!! Some people with hard work can get to places in life that nobody would believe....I know this is true. Some people end up with nothing that should have had everything.....I know this is true. But as the other poster on this thread says "you cant teach a guy to throw a 95 mph fast ball".
-
Do you not believe that you were born with the intelligence to allow you to become and engineer??? Of course it took hard work etc. but you have to have a certain level of smarts to even attempt it. Do you think a kid with learning disabilities could become an engineer? I think not. Not everyone could be an engineer, no matter how hard the try!!! I agree with the basic principle of what your saying, but to get to the top tier of any sport it takes more than just hard work. I agree some athletes make it to the pros with less talent than others and must work harder to stay....but they are still blessed with plenty of natural talent.
-
Many who are pro also have functional degrees. How were they able to do it and others who only focused on their sport didnt. Your opionion is yours, but I think it lacks a real perspective. Have you tried to be a pro? Or are you just certain you could if you were to try?
-
Nickent has a 14* 1 iron. You probably want to get more than 2* seperation between those clubs.
-
Totally not true!! There are thousands of guys who have played golf their entire lives, had good teachers, and plenty of money and time to devote to the game and never become a professional golfer. It erks me when people actually believe that if they had the time and money they could be a professional athlete. To get to the "Pro" level you have to have natural ability as well as the others stated. Many people play golf their entire lives and never get below a 10 handicap. You would inevitablily be a better golfer if you had these advantages but to say that you could be a "Pro" is SILLY!
