The golf swing is such a fast athletic move. I don't see it being any different to pitching a baseball. You learn what you need to do to do it well, then you just think, I want to hit it there and you do it. When I was playing to an ok level, I had no thought about my swing on the course. It was a natural thing to me. I don't know how I can have any cognitive thought from the moment the down swing starts to impact. Golf used to be easy for me at times. My play has gotten worse because my brain has gotten in the way of the athleticism I have. To have speed in golf you are essentially just letting go at the ball. But so many factors come into play if you want to do this well.

I'm very left handed. I write, golf, throw, bat LH. But I do shoot a gun and bow RH. The reason is I'm right eye dominant and can't close my right only. Also, my vision is better in my right eye.

I find this to be a facinating topic. If you never throw the club how can you create speed? I like the guys term in the video about calling pros expert throwers. I think that is the only way you can create enough speed to play golf at a high level. Other than chipping and putting, the golfer is basically timing the throw of the club. I pitch very similar to the way Erik advocates, letting the club pass the hands at the ball. If I want to hit it higher, I throw the club faster. Another thought I had on the topic was a common golf analogy of using the club as like a whip. I don't think of great swings of anything close to swinging a sledge hammer. That is an action where you don't ever throw the hammer. It is so heavy you don't want to loose control b/c you could hurt yourself. How I see this is a fine line between throwing and not throwing. If you try to take the throw out of your swing you are going to have a hard time playing. But if you go to the other end, you will have no control but speed. So the people that have the ability to play can innately find the medium needed. The players that struggle with the game have a hard time being able to do this.

I'm not saying that athletes only do static stretches. It is a combo of both getting ready to perform. Also, physical therapist use static stretches alot (at least when I went after knee surgury). When I look at training I still see alot of static stretches. To say they are bad and have no use is mis-information IMO. But in terms of this thread, getting your body ready to swing is important. I'm sure we all have had the days that we just felt tight and couldn't make a good move. Warming up either by stretching or hitting balls is great to avoid that. I'm not stretching to make a fuller turn. I'm stretch to make a turn and not loose my inclination to the ground. I also want to feel like I can make a smooth transition. If I'm tight I find it harder.

Went to the gym tonight. Felt ok. A little sluggish. Did shoulder front raises, upright rows, millitary presses, side raises. Then curls, two varieties. Went to the treadmill, felt really tight running so kind of mixed it up. Walked backwards to stretch a bit, ran. Only did 1.2 miles. Then stretch a ton. My quads and calfs are hurting from Monday.

Suggestion Erik. Put a towel over the display. I hate staring at the time. It just drags. But regardless running outside is so much better.

Perfect. The system sucks. I would love to love college football the way I do the NFL. But until there is a fair way most years I am very disinterested after the regular season. And any argument about cost or caring for students is rediculous. Look at the new conferences are lining up. Boise St in the big east? They could give a shit about students. They care about making money. But the funny thing is the could make more money having a play off and using there corp sponsor names on the playoff games.

What a stupid system. They didn't win there conference and get to play for a national championship game. It would be nice to see a game that hasn't already been played. Nothing against AL, I love the SEC, but this really sucks. I think it should be an 8 team playoff. No conference championship games as they seem to mean nothing. Just start last weekend, attach some stupid name to each and let them play it out for the title. Still let others play in bowl games but have a top 8 playoff.

Worked out last night and last night at the gym. Last night. Did squat/millitary press to get my legs warmed up. 4 sets. Last was really heavy for me so could only get 5 or 6. Then did squats 3 or 4 sets. Haven't squated in a while so kept the weight maybe 75% my max on last set. Then did calf raises, dead lifts. The did abs. Crunches and leg raises. Good workout. Tonight did chest and back. My rotator cuff is pretty sensitive so my chest is limited to what I can do. I have to keep my elbows really close to my body when I am pushing. But anyway, did pullups/dips. Then did dumb rows, pull downs, flys, other flys, bench, and decline bench. Did about an hour and got a good workout. Overall I felt pretty good. Shoulder felt good with no pain benching and went pretty heavy for me.

I have a hard time buying that static stretches are bad for you. Have you ever been to a football game or baseball game early and watched them warm up.

Ran 2 miles with the dog. Was a little sore and pretty slow. Enjoyed the cold weather and the time outside.

Workout tonight. Did triple super set thing with flat bench, curls, military press. Did 4 or 5 sets. Starting off really light with last set only able to get 6 or so reps in each excercise. Then did dips, 4 sets, planks comboed with leg raises sets, then a combo curl shoulder press 4 sets. Then ran a 5k (3.1 miles) in 33.51 on a treadmill. Didn't feel great in terms of speed but got a great workout.

Absolutely. I did over the period of 2 years. I'm sure it can happen quicker.

Worked out twice last week. Did my hight intensity routine of triple super sets on monday. Did bench, millitary press, curls supersetted together. moderate wieght 4 sets. Then did arm curls and extensions supersetted toegther, then pull ups and dips. Thanksgiving day, did a 10k race. First 10k and ran it in 1 hour 5 minutes, 10.5 MPH. Got me pretty good. A great workout and fun. Tons and tons of people.

The biggest tip I have is be realistic about your skill. Your not going going to hit many greens from 175 from a perfect lie. When you get yourself out of position and you "could" hit the green but chances are you are going to pull it/push it/heavy/thin take your medicine. get yourself in position where you can make a bogie. Side hill lies are extremely difficult. You can hit wild shots. When I have a really tough shot, I often hit it 120 yards, 60 yards short and try to make a par the hard way. But that lay up shot/pitch out has to be done well. I've made many o doubles being sloppy trying to play smart.

Is there a 5th Power Accumulator?
Leftygolfer replied to david_wedzik's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm trying to grasp this. It seems like a natural thing to occur with a moderately strong grip when you cock your wrist. When you cock your (i'm going to pretend I'm corrrect handed) left hand and it is slightly turned away from the target, that angle is going to decrease in the right wrist. Then as you swing down that angle increases because of the weight, momentum of the swing. So this is works in correlation with another power producer. I'm not familar with the golf machine so I'm just going off thought and reason. But this can't be a conscious move? I know one way to play some bad golf is to not have some firmness in your angles. I remember back a long time ago I thought that was how the wrist work (flipping). I was wrong. A feeling I have now (if any) is a flatting of the left wrist through the ball (if I was right handed) so I can lead with the handle and push the ball. This would do the opposite of creating power? Does that make sense?- 58 replies

I'd say spring seems to have more of the dumb posters. I'm not 100% sure since my interest and participation vary. But if you come on here talking yourself up, you aren't going to have much fun getting harassed. If you can play, you don't need to brag about it. Also one thing I'd like to see is how much traffic there is and what time of year. I'd imagine golf interest is high around the masters, people are excited to play. So you want to talk about it. But as the season wears on, you realize you suck and don't want to play as much. Less traffic, less DAs. Hey, maybe I'm totally wrong. I bet there is someone who might know.

Sneak Peek: Graphite Design Review and TST Q&A
Leftygolfer replied to mvmac's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
How in the world can you pick a shaft without being fit to it? Being LH, I find demoing clubs almost impossible. Also, how much distance do you loose going to a heavier shaft. I've been interested in going to a 70 or 80 gram shaft in my driver to help gain control. Do people who choose a heavier shaft gain control or is that more of a myth. The shaft I've wanted to try is the old classic ys-6 or 7. Does this still perform well compared to your more expensive shafts? -
Fundamentals, Commonalities, and Prioritization
Leftygolfer replied to iacas's topic in Swing Thoughts
That's fair. I don't have the experience with other swings, only my own. But we have no disagreement in regards to the grip needs to match the swing/person to be able to play well. -
Ran tonight with my dog Ty. Not sure exact distance, but I'd say 3.5 to 4 miles. Had a good pace, a little cool weather wise. Felt strong, got a good workout. Really enjoyed it. I didn't want to do it all b/c I was tired and wore out. But happy I did it. Good for the mind.

If you could have anyone's job in Golf, who's would it be?
Leftygolfer replied to mvmac's topic in Golf Talk
My answer is going to be a little different. I'd like to manage a club. Not the club pro but the GM. It is something I could do well. I know my strengths and think it would work for me. But if I was a different person with any skill, I think being an engineer would be amazing. But my brother got that skill. I got common sense. -
Fundamentals, Commonalities, and Prioritization
Leftygolfer replied to iacas's topic in Swing Thoughts
Maybe easier but still really hard. I guess my point is that those static changes make a huge change in your dynamic swing. When those things are changed, your swing is changed. It is all inter-related. That is why there isn't one grip, one stance. I know I learned to change my static positions to play with my faults subconsciously. Now I'm trying to go to a more neutral/traditional place and my dynamic positions have to change in order to control the ball/contact/power. It has to match to be able to play. -
Worked out tonight for a half hour because time was limited. I did a triple super-set of incline bench, preacher curls, military press. 4 sets of moderate wieght. Then did a triple super set of hammer curls, front delt raises, then a tricep excecise. Finished up with some shrugs, tricep extensions, and curls going quickly from excercise to excercise. Got a great workout for the limited time I had.

Good stuff. Not familar with the program but running is great. I'd consider myself in good shape for a fat man (right now 220). I've been running a bunch recently with my dog. A long one is 5 to 6 miles. I did a 5K charity thing a month or two ago in 30.27. Not fast but I beat a bunch of thinner people. I'm doing a 10K on Thanksgiving day. For whatever reason they are fun. Under an hour will be great for me. I love getting in better shape. Its rewarding unlike golf. You can work at golf and not get better. But if you train you always get in better shape.
