Vice Golf Balls - Anyone Tried them?
bweiss711 replied to tigerrag's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
No, they aren't exactly the same price. I think they qualify as the same "price point", but fine. They are not the same price. Vice is a lil cheaper. The used ProVs I buy are even cheaper than that. And obviously the stigma of playing used balls has clouded this discussion. My opinion is a pristine used ball is no different than a new one that has been played for a few holes. So if anyone would choose to play a new ProV over a new Vice, Snell, or other, then its not that big a stretch to also prefer to play a high quality used ProV. If someone's opinion is that used balls aren't worth the trouble, then that argument won't resonate. I get that. And now we're just going to continue to go in circles here. The Vice is a fine ball by all accounts. But there are plenty of other fine balls out there. That's the point you're not entertaining. Vice is as good as ProV. I'm not saying it isn't. I am saying there are other balls at a similar price point that are also as good as a ProV. Which means there are other balls at that price point which are just as good as Vice. Specifically Snell, but I also like the Maxfli Tour. So, to finally answer your question, all else being equal, fine, I'll choose a new ball over a pristine used ProV. But I'd choose a Snell or Maxfli Tour over a Vice when deciding which new ball to buy. -

Day 10 - More focus on backswing. Feel like I made some good progress at the beginning of the session, really identifying checkpoints along the takeaway and backswing. Was able to repeatedly get the club into the same position over and over again. Was really promising.- 17,390 replies

Vice Golf Balls - Anyone Tried them?
bweiss711 replied to tigerrag's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Not sure if you're trolling or not, but I'll bite anyways. A 5 pack of Snell MTB ships for the same price as a 5 pack of Vice. And there are plenty of other premium urethane covered balls that ship at a similar price point. Some even cheaper than that. Oncore, Maxfli Tour, Kirkland, and Quantix to name a few more. And yes, if the choice was a brand new ProV or a used one, I'd take the new one. If the choice was a ProV that I saw taken out of the box 4 holes ago, or a "mint" used ProV with no discoloration or scuffing, i'd say the performance is identical. How often do you play a new ball from the box? At what point is a new one considered used? -

I understand why you make that point and its not wrong, but it's kind of twisting my words a bit. It assumes the choice is only used ProV or a Vice. I don't think a high quality used ProV differs all that much from a new ProV in performance. And I'd rather play a ProV than a Vice, or any other "tour" quality direct-to-consumer ball. But even if I concede for the sake of argument that a used ProV is inferior to a new Vice or other "tour" quality ball at that price point, I'm still going to make a different choice when it comes to buying a new ball. Yes, to your point, my choice not to play Vice has nothing to do with performance. My argument is NOT that Vice is an inferior ball. My point is with all the options out there for a new "tour" quality ball at that price point, which all claim to be as good as a ProV, I'm not going to choose the one that chooses to differentiate itself by the lifestyle of people who play it. For people to choose Vice because its every bit as good as a ProV is fine, but there are plenty of balls that make that claim. So if you choose Vice, there has to be another reason why it was chosen, and I'd like to think Vice's marketing people would like to take credit for that. I'm not saying people shouldn't play Vice. Its just not how I choose my brands. Let me start by saying as a 17 handicapper, I am aware its silly for me to be talking about the differences in golf ball performance when the differences in my swing from shot to shot completely overwhelm any difference in performance of golf balls. That out of the way, and yeah, this is probably off topic, but I do go through great care when buying used balls. I've settled on only a couple sellers that I've found which seem to consistently sell good balls. And even then, I'll visually inspect every single one looking for discoloration and scuffing. The ones that don't make the cut go in the "winter ball/practice round" bucket, and If i get enough of them, I'll actually resell them as 3A/4A quality balls. So I work a bit to mitigate the "buyer beware" aspect. -

Welcome to the site. As you can see by my handicap, I'm certainly no expert on the golf swing, but I found this video on YouTube, and keep coming back to it. Its a pretty good explanation on what wrist hinge is and isn't. I think the first 5 minutes or so do a pretty good job of showing what you're asking about. I interpret his basic take on wrist set in the backswing is if you're thinking about it, you're probably doing something wrong. Hope it helps.

Glad you agree that buying a ball based on lifestyle doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm curious of your take on used balls. I understand I didn't put a lot of context into what I consider an acceptable used ball, but my thinking is that if I buy "mint" quality used balls, and only play the ones without any discoloration or scuffing of any kind, its not going to be any different than playing the fourth hole with a ball that was new from the new package on the 1st tee. But thats my thinking. Is there something I'm missing? Maybe this discussion is better suited for a used ball thread as opposed to a Vice thread. -

Day 8 - Worked on backswing. Trying to keep the club head outside of my hands on the takeaway, and then use body and forearm rotation to bring club to the top of the backswing. Also limited myself to 20 minutes. Kept the session focused on the one skill.- 17,390 replies

Vice Golf Balls - Anyone Tried them?

Like I said, I simply do not like their marketing. They might be just as good as any other ball, but there are many direct to consumer balls out there that make the same claim, while also marketing towards their merit as a golf ball, not the lifestyle of the people who play them. If other people want to play them, thats fine. I don't look down on others for that choice. Its just not the choice for me. I'll stick to Snell and used Pro Vs. -
I voted I don't mind as I mostly play as a single. However, there are times when I know I'm playing during a down time, like a mid-morning mid-week tee time, where I expect to be able to play by myself. I'll usually tell whoever might get paired up with me that I intend to take it slow, and play multiple balls, and they should go ahead and tee off in front of me. But, I am also mindful when booking a tee time as a single that not everyone wants me paired with them. So, I'll only book tee times where I'm the first to book, or only 1 or two people have booked already. I figure that way, everyone kind of knows what they signed up for before they even get to the first tee. And I'll avoid booking a tee time as the 4th person. I'm aware that a threesome probably isn't looking for a 4th, or at least wouldn't mind not having a 4th. I'll make an exception if I'm looking to play a busy public course during prime Saturday or Sunday mornings. I'd have to assume that anybody looking to play a public course at that time knows they will get paired up with random players. But mostly, no, I don't mind.

Day 5: Started off with some backswing work in the mirror, making sure my hands were in a good position at the top of the backswing. From there, I was trying to feel starting the backswing with my left hip moving back and down first, then finishing with my turn around the left side. Some swings felt great, others not so much. But thats ok. I know I have way too many swing thoughts and lose track of all of them. But I think I'm working towards the right goal... trying to understand what every part of the swing does in relation to the other parts. Hopefully next week, I'll feel pretty good about posting a swing video in my swing thread.- 17,390 replies

Day 2: Worked on hip turn with a G-Box. Something seemed to click while wearing it during the drill where you place the club across your chest while crossing your arms. The lead shoulder dip seemed to make a lot more sense with the hip turn. Finally felt like I was turning in my backswing with my core as opposed to my arms. Need to remember this drill as a go to drill moving forward.- 17,390 replies

My recoveries have been declining this week. Not necessarily because of NYE. Didn't even have any drinks. Its just this week I've really gotten out of the nice routine I was in right before Christmas. Sleep is way off, exercise and water intake is way down. So its actually great to see this reflected in the recovery scores. Hopefully as I get back into a better routine, the recoveries will go back up. I was in a nice stretch a week or so ago of steadily increasing my HRV. Would be nice to see that progress again.

My 2021 goals: 1) Maintain detailed stats for every round I play using Arccos, TheGrint, and a homemade spreadsheet. 2) Maintain an active streak for the entire calendar year in the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge. Focus of this year's practice will be ball striking. Improved tee-to-green will get my score below 90 more often. Won't worry about short game or putting in an official capacity until tee-to-green improves. 3) Lower my index by hitting more greens and giving away fewer shots. Index lower than 17.2 (my current index). 25% GIR (22% in 2020) 75% GIR+nGIR Average less than 3 penalty strokes per 18 holes. 4) Play at least 10 courses I've never played before.

Goal achieved! Finished the year with a 17.2 index. Very happy with that. Was a 24.5 coming into the year. As for some of the details, I definitely practiced more, completed the 5 minutes daily practice challenge, started a swing thread, and played more golf than I ever have before. Could still stand to improve upon the "specific and focused" part, however. All in all, 2020 was a great year for golf, and am looking forward to further improvement in 2021.

Got you. I just did a quick little workout. Strain to 4. Not going to run today, but am heading out shortly to walk a quick 9 holes. Interested to see how strain progresses through out the day. Thanks for the input, guys. Already, the benefits of going through this experience in a group are showing up.
-
yes, its processed my sleep and its running. Data is current in the app. I manually start and stop my sleep activity in the app. I found this help article: Why is my Strain 0? – WHOOP To start to accumulate Strain, you need to reach 30% of your Heart Rate Reserve. Your Heart Rate Reserve is the range from your resting HR to your max HR. For example, if your max is 200 and restin... Seems to explain it. If my calculations are correct, it won't calculate strain until I hit somewhere between 86-90 bpm heart rate. My walk this morning topped out at 84. I had a spike over 100 when i sprinted up the stairs, but it wasn't sustained. Maybe that's it. Doesn't explain why you start at 4 though.
-
Thanks. Its odd because it seems to calculate my strain scores from my lunchtime workouts the last 2 days and then continues to gradually increase the score for the rest of the day. But from morning to lunch, I get nothing. I'll probably give it until the end of that initial window. Good to know customer support is responsive. Ok, maybe ill reach out earlier. Its definitely reading my heart rate. I can see the minute by minute graph and it correlates directly with my activity so far today. Just no strain score calculation.
-
Question for you guys.... I noticed both yesterday and today, that both mornings, my strain score has been 0.0. Still is for today right now. My mornings are always light working from home. I woke up, walked my kids to school (less than half mile round trip), and then sit in my home office the rest of the morning. But I am moving around a bit, walking up and down stairs between the kitchen and basement and doing some light putting on my mat. Just seems odd that the strain score is zero. Is this because I'm still in that initial 5 day window? I see a few of you are at about 4. Have you done much more than I have to this point in the day?

just got my strap, and joined the team. Really curious to see all this data about myself.
