  1. Taylormade spends some serious money on marketing and advertising, but remember, that increases sales. More sales = more profits = more $$ to spend on product research and development. Taylormade makes some great woods and I happen to really like their putters. In fact, I'd love to trade in my Odyssey on a Taylormade Monte Carlo. I've never swung a Taylormade iron, but a friend plays the R7s and really likes them.
  2. I'd say go for it. For $100, can't go wrong. If you have trouble hitting them, take a couple lessons. $100 + a couple lessons = less than the cost of the Burners. If you would rather have the Burners, you might be able to get a deal at, say, www.taylormadegolfpreowned.com .
  3. This is the first year that I've tracked my handicap. Currently, I am a 16. I am pretty consistent with my driver and irons; strokes add up on and near the green. With weekly practice, do you think it's possible to be a 10 handicap by the end of the season? Should I shoot for lower? Higher? Any input is appreciated !
  4. I have a Tour Edge hybrid (see signature). Only time I ever use it is out of the rough. Much prefer to use the 4 iron.
  5. No intent whatsoever to start a debate. Just sharing an experience.
  6. I'm very happy with my cavities and am not planning on switching to blades anytime soon. One day though I will own Wilson Goosenecks!
  7. Went to the range a couple days ago with a buddy. He had a set of "vintage" Wilson blades (did not get the model), so I tried them out. This was the first time I had ever swung a blade. Now I am a mid-high handicapper who games relatively forgiving MX-25s (very happy with them), but found that I could hit his irons almost as well as mine. I was able to hit the 3 iron consistently straight about 180-190 yards, 5 iron about 160 yards. Any other mid-high handicappers ever had an experience like this? Despite what salesmen and clubmakers tell you, maybe blades aren't just for very low handicappers? It was definitely very satisfying to be able to hit the blades well!
  8. I just went to Dick's for a fishing license and decided to try out the RACs while I was there. They seemed alright, but I think I'll wait until I can afford some MP T-10s.
  9. Thanks for the input! I need to replace the wedges in the near future, but will probably pass on this deal.
  10. Dick's currently has them at 2 for $100. Anyone ever used one?
  11. The MX-200s use Mizuno's "Y-Tune" technology, which supposedly adds a bit of forvigeness by extending the sweet spot forward. They are Mizuno's replacement for the MX-25, which is the replacement for the MX-23. I find my 25s to be quite forgiving; I would assume that the 200s wouldn't be much different. When I demoed the 200s, the performance was very similar (granted, this was at a simulator at Galaxy). I was going to get the 200s, but the 25s were about $250 cheaper!
  12. I am very satisfied with my MX-25s. They can be picked up cheap now since the MX-200s came out. IMO the MX-25s look better than the MX-23s, but it's all personal preference.
  13. You can certainly tell when you mishit the MX-25s. I have found them to be forgiving enough, though I did replace the 4 iron with a hybrid. I'm not exactly a great golfer either.
  14. Update: I went with a set of Mizuno MX-25 irons. Hopefully it dries up a little here in southern Illinois so I can play a round soon! Thanks for all the advice!
  15. Thanks for the suggestions! Two more models have caught my eye: Nickent 4dx CB and Nickent 4dx Pro. I have the opportunity to snatch up either of these for less than $200 brand new. Looking at pictures online, the cavity in the CB does not appear much deeper than the cavity in the Pro model. The Pro model is also forged. The Pro model would leave me a great deal of room to grow, but I am wondering if it is too much iron for me to handle. Any thoughts?
  16. I am a bogey golfer looking for a new set of irons for this season. There are tons of great deals right on brand new previous year irons. Currently, I am playing Mizuno MX-19s. The biggest problem I have with the MX-19s is that they are so large and forgiving that it feels like swinging a shovel. I'd like to try something a little smaller, but still forgiving. I'm afraid that swinging the shovels is concealing my flaws instead of helping me improve. I've never tracked my handicap (plan to start this season) so the number on the left is, at best, a rough guess. I have been playing for about two years. Models that have caught my eye are: Callaway X-18-20-22 Cobra SZ Mizuno MX-25 (used set for less than $200) Ping G5-10-15 Taylormade R7 Any other recommendations? Like I said, I want forgiveness without that "garden shovel" feeling. Any comments would be appreciated!
  17. Well, I made it to the range this morning. Beautiful morning except for the fact that I was hitting into a 20 MPH wind. Oh well, I suppose those are good conditions to practice in. I just want to say thanks for all the helpful posts here. I found out what my biggest problem was: I was gripping the woods incorrectly. I adjusted my grip slightly clockwise (I'm a righty) and the slice was significantly reduced. Also, I paid slightly more attention to my swing arc, and noticed that 1) my swing was a bit too steep and 2) I was swinging "outside-in." I flattened out my swing and went more "inside-out." The crippling slice is gone; all that remains is a slight fade. I can live with that for now. My carry distance has also increased by about 20 yards, and I should be hitting the CORRECT fairway more often! Thanks again, you guys rock!
  18. I have a problem with slicing when using drivers and fairway woods. I can hit my irons and hybrid fairly consistently, but not the woods. I have tried drivers of different lofts, flexes, sizes, and brands, but cannot rid myself of the stubborn slice. The same applies to fairway woods, though the slice is not as severe. I cannot afford to take lessons at this time, so that is out of the question. Does anyone have any tips for fixing this problem? I am tired of teeing off with my hybrid!
  19. Might as well take advantage of that special. You could get the driver/3W and ebay your old 3W, or a driver/5W and keep the 5W.
  20. This is America. In America, you are innocent until proven guilty. Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation. I highly doubt this politician ever visited Neverland Ranch. He's just running his mouth and trying to get some attention.
  21. I would say that it is worth trading if you hit the G2s better. However, I would suggest playing a couple rounds of golf with your friend while swapping clubs. That is honestly the only way to tell if you hit his irons better (and vice versa). You will hit balls from different lies, different angles, etc.
  22. Make sure the photos are of the actual item and not stock photos from the manufacturer. That way you can ensure that you are not getting a knock-off.
  23. My favorite grips are some of the cheapest I have found: Golf Pride Tour Wrap (midsize). Very comfortable and quite sticky.
