I shot another mediocre 41 on my league. I just could not take advantage of a few good drives. A lost ball on a Par 4 led to a 7.

It's Jack, but I think the technology argument actually hurts Jack more than it helps. The clubs are better now than they ever were. That levels the field by allowing guys that could not keep up with Tiger hit it farther and straighter than ever. I think Erik mentioned earlier in the thread that even Tiger feels that if they went back to old clubs, Tiger would be that much better than the rest of the Tour. He was using a smaller, steel shafted, driver just a few years ago.

If the Sand Trap was around in 89, I would have been able to post that as my best "shot" of the week.

I don't know if it would be any better if they were just punk kids. If that is the case, someone needs to enlighten them quickly. I have zero tolerance for stuff like this. Back in the Fall of 89, there was a big deal made about how we had the right to burn the American Flag. I was at a Halloween party when some jackass, wanabe punk, tried to do just that. He went out back and put it on the ground and lit the edge of it. Everyone was bothered, but didn't do anything. I walked up to it and stepped on the flame. He called me something and said "I have the right to do this." He tried to light it again and I grabbed the lighter out of his hand. He started bitching about how I was interfering with his rights and shoved me. Wrong choice. I laid him out with one shot. I have lots of friends that are Jewish. I work in an area that has a very large Jewish population. There is a great Holocaust Memorial Center just down the street from my work. One of my old barbers was in Auschwitz. Unfortunately ignorance and hate are far too common. As I have gotten older, the flag has come to mean even more to me. Regardless of views on the war and politics, it still represents our country. The same holds true with a persons religion. I am not big on religion, but I respect others and their views.

No doubt he should be in the conversation. What he overcame was nothing short of remarkable and he did it at a time where the rehabilitation and modern medicine are nothing like today.

Did Tiger do enough is his short season to be player of the year? Here is a brief review of his year: 4 official wins (plus 1 in Dubai) Buick Invitational WGC Match Play Arnold Palmer at Bay Hill US Open 2nd at the Masters (3 shots back) 5th at Doral (2 shots back) Worst Finish of the year. Current Money Leader: $5,775,000 ($962,500 per official start). He will be passed up on this by a few guys, but none will come close to the earnings per start number. Regular Season FedEx Cup points leader: 22,695. Probably will be passed up here, but again, did this in 6 tournaments. Leader in Scoring, GIR and Scrambling. With all of this, I say he has already done enough to win it.
-
Now the question is will someone catch him in the regular season FedEx Cup points. If they don't, then I think they should just give him the cup again and not even hold the playoffs. It could actually make for an interesting race the rest of the way. Will people look at the winners of the next two majors like they did the Huston Rockets when they won two NBA Titles while Jordan was in his first retirement?

Well, I guess we can close this thread now. I think Tiger just answered the question by winning the US Open with stress fractures in his knee and a torn ACL.

Very mature response to the debate. I'm taking my ball and going home. One of the great things about sports is the ability to debate eras. Would the 1970's Steelers beat the 80's 49ers and the 90's Cowboys? I say yes, but many others will say no. I know they would beat the Patriots because without the technology that has allowed them to cheat so well they would not be as good. There is no right answer in any of these, only opinions. An argument can be made for Jack as it can be for Tiger. There may have been a few more great players in Jack's era, but many of them, like Palmer and Watson, were either at the end or the beginning of their runs. Most of the top players that Tiger is facing have careers that are almost parallel to him. Phil, Ernie, Goosen and Duval all joined the Tour within about 5 years of Tiger. Vijay's best years also came in the "Tiger" era. The depth and ability of the guys an Tour is amazing, top to bottom. Every year there are multiple first time winners. The quality of play is better now than ever. There are 40+ guys that can win every week.

I would assume when he said he didn't want to play anymore he meant right now, not forever. He sounded and looked exhausted. I have played through back problems and even the most relaxing rounds leave you feeling mentally and physically exhausted. I can't imagine doing it at that level, under the toughest conditions in golf on the longest course in history for 5 straight days.
-
Then what stats are we looking at? Tiger has a higher winning percentage, lower scoring average, won the career slam at a younger age, won it a second time at a younger age. Has more majors than jack at the same age. He owns the scoring records at most if not all of the majors. He shot 12 under at a US Open where the next best guy didn't break par. He won a British Open without using his driver. Dominance and greatness do generally go together. Tiger dominates the tour both physically and mentally. He is so good that he has made people question the greatness of future/current Hall of Fame players like Els, Phil and Vijay.

That was a very good Finals. Too bad the ratings were awful. There was no sex appeal. Unfortunately the Pistons players have started to act like they are better than they really are. They don't have the same chemistry and the commitment to defense is long gone. They forgot that it was playing as a group that won the title in 04 and brought them within one blown assignment of back to back rings. This Boston team really impresses me with their defense. I turned the game on in the 3rd when they were down 18 and thought it was over. When I heard they won it I was stunned. I hear they were just relentless down the stretch.

I picked up a couple pairs of the Jockey Life Mesh boxer briefs. Now, before you start thinking fish net, these are more like a basketball jersey with the little holes in them. I love the micro fiber Jockey Life ones because they are breathable and form fitting with a "valuables" pouch. The mesh ones don't fit the same way and have a button fly. Not a big fan. The only upside is they keep you a little cooler when it's hot out.

I don't think he has to worry. He will be 34 this Summer, smokes and has a gut. Not likely to be suiting up anytime soon. McCarty was a personal training client at the club I run. He brought the cup into the club in Summer of 1998. I started working here in December of 1998. He and Slava Koslov trained here until about 2000. Unfortunately I never got a chance to get up close with it.

We got pounded pretty good on Sunday. There were winds of 80 mph reported, and a few unofficial tornados reported. They were not official because they were not verified by a spotter. However with what I have seen the last few days, it was not just 80 mph winds that came through. There are huge trees that are snapped in half and it is in pockets. There are places with little or no damage and then just a mile up the road 50' trees are down. As of Monday there were 200,000 people without electricity. We lost it at home for 25 hours. At work our building is on 2 grids. We have electric through most of our facility but we don't have air conditioning and our water comes from a well. No juice to pump, no water to the building. It was a nightmare on Monday. People trying to workout with temps inside above 85. Yesterday was much better. Today was in between. My office is at 80 right now.

I did not vote because I play at two courses regularly that are very different. White Lake Oaks has always been good about trying to keep things moving. They will tell groups to speed up or let people play through. Jack, the starter is a great guy and always takes care of us. Unfortunately they are under staffed at times but they still do their best. Heather Highlands rangers are useless. We play behind a womens league that is incredibly slow. They all walk to one ball and wait for that person to hit before walking to the next. They wait for greens to clear when they are 250 yards out. We have spoken to the starter, rangers and the pro shop. They will not do anything about it. There is rarely a ranger on the course. If he is out there it is not in an attempt to speed up play.

The other thing to point out is that not everyone that watches golf, even the LPGA, is a die hard fan. Many of them don't know who Pressel and Creamer are, but they do know who Michelle Wie is and they want to see her play. TV is a business. The goal is to get as many people to tune in as possible. To do that they occasionally need to do a little side show stuff. In 2006 the coverage was warranted. She was in contention in 3 majors, with a real chance to win on the back 9 on Sunday. Last year they did not show her much because, as you said, she was gone on Friday. I'm sure NBC is hoping to be able to show her on Sunday, late in the day, with a chance to win. I don't know what the TV ratings were like in 2006 vs. 2007, but I would bet they were higher in the events that she was contending in.

I would have thrown a few punches then thrown you in the river. Serriously though, as rude as slow play is, firing balls over guys heads trumps that. If they won't let you play through, then either skip a hole or call the pro shop. At the very least, ask them straight up "Why won't you let us play through?"

I think we may have a new record. That was more than 10 posts without someone saying anything bad about her or about how she has never done anything on a golf course to warrant the attention she gets. It will be interesting to see if her good play continues and if so, will it change her plans to play part time while completing her degree.

Geez. With odds like that, Tiger should consider retiring. I don't think he forgot how to play in the last couple months. When he played after the death of his father, it was a mentally draining time for him. He was playing for the first time knowing that he would not be able to talk to his dad after a round. A knee surgery is not like having a filling in your tooth, but he only had the knee "cleaned up", not a knee replacement. Will there be some rust? Maybe. Can he win? Yes. Is he the favorite? I'll still say yes until he does not win.
-
I say Tiger. He is so mentally tough. I was watching a few minutes of Tiger at Torrey and they were talking about comparing the eras and many people say Jack played against tougher players in his day. However, if there were no Tiger Woods we would be talking about the great battles that Phil, Ernie, Duval and Vijay had the last 10 years. Tiger is just so dominant that it overshadows some of the all time greats of this era. Jack did have one line that made me think that he is getting more bitter as he gets older. He said that "Tiger may not get to 18 because there is nobody to push him." That is an insult to some great golfers and more importantly to Tiger himself. Tiger is motivated by winning. I serriously doubt the lack of a true challenger will stop him. If he wants the record, and by all accounts he does, he only needs to look in the mirror for the motivation. The only two things that I could see getting in his way are a serious injury or family problems.

Mine is on, but in a lined pocket in the bag. It is not going to be loud enough to be heard unless you are carying the bag. I run two health clubs, so my hours don't end at 9-5. I try not to talk on it during a round, but if need bee I will hang back or walk away from other players to minimize any distractions.
-
There is no doubt she has always had the ability. I hope she strings together some solid finishes to get her confidence back. If she is healthy and mentally right she will be right back where she was in 2006. Contending on Sunday in Majors.

As an exercise physiologist and someone certified by the ACSM, I actually think their testing is flawed. Granted, the ability to hit 20 shots in a row may be decreased by walking a mile, golf is not played that way. You never walk for 1 mile straight without putting down your clubs or taking shots in between. I would like to see them do a test with more golfers of comparable fitness and skill levels. Have them playing rounds at various courses and have them carry on some courses and ride on others. Multiple rounds will eliminate the variables. This way you could have multiple rounds truly compare golf scores, not swing techniques. The key factor is going to be fitness level. If you take an out of shape guy and have him carry a bag for 18 holes when he normally rides, there will be a big jump in score.

Unfortunately there are some out there that just don't care. We have had one come up to us and tell us our fivesome was slowing down play when we were waiting on every shot for the threesome in front of us. Apparently the group behind us didn't seem to notice that we were standing around waiting to hit all morning and called the pro shop. Once we explained to the ranger what was going on, he didn't bother to ask the threesome to speed it up or let us play through.
