Who is the most famous person you've golfed with?
Fatphil replied to MasonAsher2014's topic in Golf Talk
I thought Brad Pitts' brother was Stu? Badabing, I know, old joke. -
Oldest one in the book and hardest to do is change clubs in-between each shot. On the course you can have 2 - 8 min between shots. Talking to your friends, looking for balls etc. To hit one ball after another on the range is exercise, to change clubs and approach each shot like you would on the course is practicing golf.

just to expand on the Buckeye dude, I agree the mind takes it all in and "if" I hit the putt on the sweet spot I'm amazed that the putt is usually in or damn close to perfect. That leads me to think that the biggest 'secret" to putting is getting your technique to the point where you hit or come close to the sweet spot. If you hit it solid, the mind and natural hand eye coordination does the rest.

What are the economics of golf carts?
Fatphil replied to 0ldblu3's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I guess it's a major source of income for a glorified bag, beer and cel phone carrier. Sure would rather give $20 to a high school kid and get some exercise. Caddies have gone the way of the fax machine. -
the shanks - a regular occurence
Fatphil replied to davieboy1872's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Don't reallly have any advice other than an opinion that only better players shank. Beginners tend to stand up, pull away and toe the ball. Shankers are holding the angle OK and coming at the ball from the inside, you just get a little wide with your hands. The difference between a solid strike and a shank is less than an inch. Guess that don't make ya feel much better but that's all I got. -
Useless tidbit of information. Medinah in arabic translates as "city".

agree with Rustyred. I cringe when I watch an 18 hndcp trying that shot. Most play with GI irons and woods that lets them sweep the ball & hit it anywhere on the clubface. Works fine from 150 off a fluffy lie but from 50 yds in, precise contact while holding the angle is not easy if you've never practiced. Try 5000 balls on the practice green from 30 feet with a 60 degree. Once you get the "feel" for that shot you'll start to get it.

Any tips for the dreaded 30-50yd bunker shot?
Fatphil replied to dash1988's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
yeah I go along with this comment. a 90' bunker shot is just a long explosion. 50 yds is another shot altogether and on the 10 or so courses I play on a regular basis, I just don't see many of them. But like someone else said its a course mgmt issue. If I see one up ahead I will avoid it at ALL costs 'cause most hdcp players (myself included) will screw it up 90% of the time. -
The connection between my brain and my body ain't on the Tony Romo level ... I am keeping my bag 10 feet away on the range and forcing myself to change clubs every swing. The mental exercise to go thru my "check down" list on every swing is quite difficult, it makes me organize my brain and improve the connection between mind and body.

Miami Beach Golf Club, Crandon or Biltmore
Fatphil replied to jcard71's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
yeah the Beach is OK. the condition is excellent. Not as cool as Crandon but the condition of MB is way better. Re Doral, the only thing about the blue is to play the course you see on TV. But if you are on the beach its not really worth the drive. I prefer the Silver (now called the McLean course). FYI if you are planning 5 or 6 rounds in SE FL you may want to look at buying a Premier Card. U play all these courses for $35 with the card. I think it drop to $150 after July 1 never been a big Biltmore fan. I think its boring but the condition is very good. -
played the Caddyshack course yesterday, (aka Grand Oaks in Ft Lauderdale)...81...really fun. Can still see where a lot of the movie was filmed.

yup I hear ya. I think that is a very difficult move for the weekend player to get. If you hold the angle thru transition and keep the clubhead outside your hands you are set up for a very steep down ward swing UNLESS you some how "flatten" it out. (think Boo Weekly or Graeme McDowel) When I'm playing well I can hold the angle and I feel my trailing elbow as if it's pushing away from my body towards the ball while I try to hold my wrists and hands locked. To me holding the angle is more important than coming in too steep...at worst I hit a weak fade or pull fade, much better than loseing the angle (or lag) and top or fatty it. At least I'm not in major trouble. Let us know if you figure it out.

Play or Practice, which do you do more?
Fatphil replied to Tyler92488's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
best practice tip I've gotten (and saw it repeated a few months ago in GD) is to change clubs after each hit. It is really hard to force yourself but the idea is that you are practicing golf not just exercising. The most difficult thing is taking your range swing to the course.. This forces you to re create the disruptive nature of golf as you frequently can have 5 -10 min inbetween shots & multiple distractions. -
I live in S. Florida and there's a shooting range at a local park that points out into the Everglades. There is a freeway that runs nearby and there was a hotel/office complex proposed to build on the Everglade side of the freeway...Needless to say a big dust up with the enviromental folks until someone realized that the hotel would have been in a direct line with the target range. Thus no hotel.

actually I think the Crandon bugs are love bugs not mosquitos....kinda like little nats...driving in the cart doesn't blow them off...they just stick with you and bite the crap out of any exposed skin. but as amen corner says, some bug spray cures all. we're cutting out early on Friday to play the Beach...they quoted $110 but they got attitude there also (if ya gotta ask the fee you shouldn't be here) haha...anyway, maybe the Premier Card (which suxs now) will get a few bucks off. -

what tee's did you play @ Crandon? -
we are starting to do a lot of business in Vietnam....I have no idea if there are any decent courses there...lets see!

I think you are a bit ahead of yourself worrying about upswing or square. The critical part of putting is hitting the sweet spot. To do that there are two or three angles between the shaft, club head, hands and wrists that need to be maintained without so much as a millimeter of movement. Once you get that down you may want to delve into the lie & loft of your putter. If you hands and wrists are flopping around like spagetti you will never have the same stroke twice, therefore kind of a waste of energy trying to figure out upswing or square.

the cupped trailing hand and the pronated lead hand is the classic move. The point that you make the move is difficult to learn and is a very individual action. Dustin Johnson does it at the top, Boo Weekly makes it at transition, Phil and Freddy tend to make it just prior to impact. To learn what works for you on an individual basis is not easy. When it works its awesome, but the next weekend ya can't remember what the hell you did. As Johnny Miller says...WOOD (Works Only One Day).
