I grew up hitting blades and finally bought my first non-blade after I graduated college. That being said, I have since gone back to a blade. I have always loved the feel, feedback and challenge associated with a true blade iron. I am fully aware there are a lot of irons on the market these days which are a lot easier to hit than a blade, but I still like to stick to my blades. To me it's like swinging a wood bat vs. an aluminum bat...it just feels better in my hands.

How often do you use your 4 iron?
Gilly replied to anotherday's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
For me it all depends on who I'm playing with and where. If I'm with some of my buddies who only play a few times per year, we end up playing the whites, so I might use it 1-3 times per round. However, if I'm playing with some of my buddies who play several times per week, we play the blues or tips. If this is the case, I typically end up hitting either the 3 or 4 between 2-5 times per round. -
I have loved every Bridgestone iron I've ever swung. Once my current set is ready for retirement, I will be picking up a set of j33b's if I can find them still.

Good set of Irons for mid-handicapper
Gilly replied to hacker23's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The Ping's and Mizuno's are definitely good sticks. I personally would look into the Cleveland line. I absolutely loved my TA3's and have hit the new CG7 Tour irons...very solid! I'd go out and hit as many different clubs as you can, then start narrowing it down. My .02 -
Gotta love a yellow ball ...
Gilly replied to Dave's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I have been thinking about trying the yellow "Z" ball from Srixon for some time now. I have one problem though, I would have to use a white ball when using my driver since I couldn't imagine the crap I would get for using a ball that matched my driver shaft in color. If any of you remember the old Harrison PRO 2.5 shafts that were BRIGHT, BRIGHT yellow...well, that's what I've got. Yes, I know how hideous it is, but I have yet to find a shaft I spin less and hit farther. I already get a ton of crap when I pull it out of my bag. I can just imagine throwing a bright yellow ball into the equation. -
Nike Victory Red Blades Vs Nike Forged Blades
Gilly replied to KingMe's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have played the VR blades for two rounds and several driving range outings. They are very nice sticks, but I still like my old forged blades better. Might be a tad biased though Both sets were identical setups (+1 and 2* upright). Lucky you, man! Sure wish I had a 1 & 2 iron in my old blades. The 1-iron is impossible to find. -
Well, I guess I'm a Nike guy. I'm not opposed to other brands, but when you live less than 5 miles from Nike's world headquarters and have a TON of friends/buddies that work there, you tend to end up with a lot of Nike "stuff." Plus, the majority of golf tourney's in my area give out a ton of free Nike goods and prizes. Either way, I would be more than happy to try other brands more often if they were given out or discounted 50% - 75%. That being said, I would be more than happy to sport another set of Cleveland, Bridgestone, Mizuno or Staff's down the road once my Nike Blades get retired. My .02

There are A TON of amazing blades that have been made over the past decade...or two. From my experience, the best blades I've ever hit were as follows: - My grandfather's old Spalding Tour Professionals (grooves were pretty shot since they were 30-40 years old, but man they felt good!) - Nike Forged Blades - Cleveland CG Tour - Mizuno MP33 There are several others I've played, but personally wouldn't recommend.

Another great idea...however, there is no way I'm giving her my Nike Blades.

Best looking irons? Have your say.
Gilly replied to Hacksaw's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yeah, these definitely look cool, but the first thing that came to my mind was how much it would suck to clean them after a wet round. -
Good advice. My wife is actually 5'8" though. So far, I have shown her the Taylor Made Burner's & some Callaway's. I'm gonna have her try the Adams as well. Thanks for all the responses. Keep'em coming if you've got'em.

As said above...I would look into some new sticks. I played a set of TA3's for about 5 years until the grooves fell off and loved them, but at this point, if I were you, I'd look at a new set. You can find some very good deals out there too!

Thanks for the info. I will definately look into those. Anyone else?

My wife loves to golf and has gotten a ton better in the past 3 years, so I'd like to buy her some new sticks. Her current sticks are complete garbage. Does anyone out there have some recommendations? Any women on this forum wanna chime in? She has above average club head speed and has no problem getting the ball in the air. We will be going to test out some clubs in the next couples weeks, but figured I'd see if I could get some feedback off this forum as well. Thanks in advance!

Why is my 3w distance longer than my driver?
Gilly replied to customdusty's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
^ epic technique! However, I would recommend using less left hand and more right hand - with a glass of wine or frosty beverage in it. -
Why is my 3w distance longer than my driver?
Gilly replied to customdusty's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
It was my understanding that 3-woods don't fall under the same rules as drives, in that the club face and ball speeds are not monitored as closely as drivers...if at all. Drivers are mandated not to exceed a certain ball speed where as 3-woods are not. I could be wrong, but this is what I have been told. This could be another reason as to why your distances tend to be greater with your 3-wood. -

Favorite iron grip.....and why?
Gilly replied to toddmlazarchick's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm a huge fan of the golf pride multi compound grips. I use the standard size and double tape them. I use these grips because I tend to get sweaty hands during the rounds and the whether here in Oregon isn't exactly the driest either. There are several outstanding grips out there, but these are the ones I will be using for another 5 years. My .02 -
I loved my Ping Eye-2's when I was playing them. A very forgiving iron set. It's kinda weird, I was playing this weekend with a guy who had a set of G5's I believe. At first glance, I thought they were some old Ping Eye-2's. It's pretty amazing that style and club head shape is still being deployed today after 20+ years. That in itself should give you some idea how well designed those clubs are. I've still got my old set too, but would probably be selling them for a little more than a couple hundred bucks. They're a full beryllium copper white dot set (1 - L-wedge) with all matching serial numbers. Let me know if you might have some interest. Good luck with your decision!

Help choosing a golf pull or push cart!!
Gilly replied to PuttPutt's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
clicgear is the only cart I would buy. I've used both Sun Mountain and Bag Boy carts, but the clicgear still wins my vote every time! I really don't think you can beat it. -
I bought a bucket of 100 Nike One Blacks last month for $29 and wish I had bought 3 or 4 buckets at that price. They are awesome balls. That being said, if I had found a Bridgestone, Srixon or Pro V for that price, I would have bought them instead. Personally, I have a very hard time "feeling" the difference between Pro V's, Nike One's or any other high price ball. They all, for the most part, feel similar. If you can find the Pro V's in a 100 bucket for a good price, give'em a shot. Otherwise, I would go with a different high end ball that's cheaper since I tend to lose a lot of balls. Good luck with your decision. I really don't think any of your options are bad ones.
