    Golf books

I agree with you Shindig...too many 'tips' and 'swings' can go through one's head...and sometimes those expert advice thoughts are conflicting. The book that I found to be wonderful is Michael Hebron's "GOLF SWING SECRETS AND LIES" in that he doesn't tell you how to swing, he explains what needs to happen to get the ball to move (and to move where you want it to) which will allow for self-discovery of a swing that works for you (and that you can repeat, repeat, repeat...). It's somewhat unorthodox from the usual 'learn to swing' books...and was exactly what i needed. Plus I took a 3 day workshop from him... been playing great golf since...
  2. Iacas' recommendation is correct... download & install the latest iPod software updater, then connect the iPod to your computer and let the sw reset the device and update the sw on the iPod. That should do it. It worked for my Ver 2 iPod when it froze last summer.
  3. I recall reading in GolfWorld that GC will have HD content when CBS/NBC do the weekend broadcasts because of an equipment sharing agreement; so HD is coming out of the tournaments...as others have mentioned, it's still up to the operators (cable or sat) as to whether they carry it to your house.
  4. Nick also seemed more comfortable with Nantz than he did with Kelly. I saw some of the thurs/friday cov'g on the GC, and watched this afternoon...what a difference. I hope the GC continues to improve as the year goes on.
  5. Only thing I've heard of is "swing dust"... but that is for determining where on the clubface the ball made contact.... not sure that helps you with the arch though... Have you tried to google it?
  6. Thanks Powerfade. Except for the reverse-greenie, I had heard of these in other variations (Polies being Snakes, Chippies being Lizards, etc.)
  7. If "Belly Putters" give a significant advantage, I would think that the majority of players would use them...and in watching the tour, players at my own club, etc. I don't see that many people use them... I think this is moot.
  8. I recall a 'technique' that I heard from Michael Hebron to help people with tempo (and also to help those that have too many 'swing thoughts' going through their head...it reinforced his message that good consistent swings come from subconscience brain effort, not conscience brain effort)... it's the 1-2-3 method... say "1, 2, 3" to yourself (i.e. in your head) in a consistent cadence, starting with "1" at your take-away, "2" should come as you reach the top, and "3" should come as you strike the ball.
  9. These I haven't heard of before, or perhaps named this way. Can I ask someone to explain these 4? Thanks.
  10. I had just the opposite experience when I tried out SC putters... I found the Circa to be much softer thant he Studio's.. Ended up with Circa #2..
  11. I'm partial to the BMW-Sauber F1.07 that was just launched.
  12. That's the ideal job for me as well. Having said that, last fall I played into a foursome that had this job... they did it for a state-wide business group that does a yearly ranking of courses in NC. Unless they said this to be discouraging, they said that they weren't paid to play, they just got reimbursed for travel/meal expenses and most of the golf is comp'd. Even if it doesn't have a salary, it does seem like an ideal job... they play up to 2x a week.
  13. Like the others that have responded, I change speed for some iron shots, certainly wedge shots, by adjusting my backswing. Personally, I'd find it hard to adjust speed with the same backswing; i had a problem for a couple of years decelerating before impact... but switching to a backswing adjustment allowed for a more consistent swing and more consistent contact with the ball.
  14. my thoughts on how long I let a ball "last"... if I'm playing my usual HX Tour, I replace it after 9-12 holes (unless as another poster mentioned I nail a tree or a cart path...then it's immediately after I finish that hole) as the HX Tours, even the 'improved' version, tend to have low durability. But if I'm playing a more casual round, i.e no money is involved, or it's not a club game, then I'm usually using Nike Power Distance Soft, and I'll play the whole 18 holes with it.
  15. Play... with the exception for the majors. I've tried the tape and watch later route, but inevitably someone in the clubhouse was talking about it, or heard of the outcome before I could watch it...
  16. I voted "Yes" but I'm not sure if it's absolute 'sacreligous'. As others have said, participation in local clubs helps support the USGA, and that should 'count'. I do it not so much for the direct benefits (although like Hogan Fan I appreciate the yearly rules book) as I do for the indirect... promotion of the game is a good thing, as is their advice on turf management (our club is about to re-do the greens and are using USGA's advice/recommendations), and their testing/etc. to help fairness in the game... so I think of the benefits beyond 'yet another bag tag' and another 'hat', etc.
  17. LOL... well done NMGolf
  18. While the main objective of both maybe similar: to get it in the hole , they are, however, quite dissimilar when it comes to level of enjoyment...in golf, it's obviously feels better to end with the fewest strokes taken, whereas with sex....
  19. Yes, I have a 60degree in my bag mainly because I can get it a little higher and stop it faster than with my 56degree (admittly it could be mental). That said, if i'm in a game/match/tournament where the number of clubs matter, if ground or wind or etc. conditions merit I might leave that one out to keep the hybrid in the bag. The two wedges I can't live without is the 56 and 52.
  20. Was talking to a friend earlier this evening, got on the topic of Tiger & Elin's baby, started joking about whether he/she will be named " Nike " That lead to, oh maybe Nikelin (pronounced Nick-a-lin) combining Nike with his/her mom's name. Anyone got any good and/or funny suggestions for the parents to be?
  21. I finally ran into the guy that used this device to flatten out his swing... got the name of it "Path Pro". Here's a pic of it, and the link: http://thegolfdrillguru.netfirms.com...g/?page_id=388
  22. I had to go get a couple of recently acquired wedges adjusted by my clubmaker/clubfitter yesterday, and on the drive back, was wondering who other folks in this forum mostly use... do they get it done at the store they bought their clubs, a professional/independent clubfitter, use the pro at their club, etc. Couldn't find a poll/thread on this, so thought I'd put it out there. And here's the link to the guy I go to... he's good, and knows me so it's always a successful experience. http://clubguygolf.com/
  23. Me neither... Occasionally I check out a forum/message board that Callaway runs... and some of their employees post information on there re: their equipment to further help explain things. One thing that I've realized is that different ball construction for different swing speeds can mean a ball that goes the longest for a high swing speed player, my not go as long as a differently constructed ball would for a slower swing speed player. For instance, here's how Callaway describes how theirs break down by player type: HX Tour The Most Complete Ball You Can Play. Engineered for aggressive swing speeds and golfers who need a ball with less spin off the driver and plenty of bite on the green. HX Tour 56 Tour-level Spin to Complete Your Game. Engineered for mid-range to aggressive swing speeds and golfers who want a softer ball with even more bite on the green. HX Hot Blazing Speed to Maximize Your Distance. Designed for average to aggressive swing speeds and golfers who enjoy being the longest drivers in their group. HX Pearl Speed and Style for a Woman's Game. Designed for lower to average swing speeds. Big Bertha Major Distance. Soft Feel. Built for average swing speeds. Warbird This Bird Will Fly. Built for average to aggressive swing speeds.
  24. I've got the event on while I've been on-line... I agree with everyone else that Faldo isn't doing that great a job; he seemed more comfortable, added more insights while on ABC (I think that's where he was)... maybe he needs more settling in... hopefully he will, seems like he's trying to hard (I mean he just said "go have a cup of tea america"...yep, he knows the audience :( What's bothering me more, is that the telecast comes across a bit "jumpy"...they seem to go back and forth and over there, then there, then back here, then something about a player, then back to the action... doesn't seem as smooth as what we've been used to on NBC or when CBS does the Masters. Although I did like the shot of the on-course commentator looking for Choi's ball in the deep grass. Hogan Fan was looking forward to this supposed "marriage made in heaven" and I think inside I was too.. maybe our expectations are a bit high, and these folk just need to get a few events under there belt...and I hope that happens, it'll be a long year of watching thur/fri play if they don't get it together.
  25. Thought I'd share with y'all a little experiment I did: After stocking up on balls (HXTours of course) and gloves, had a little money left on my Dicks Gift Card, so picked up a doz Nike Power Distance Soft ($15); ever since I saw the Consumer Reports article last sping that gave that ball a "Best Buy" rating, and it scored 1 point in their ratings above the HXT56, I've been meaning to give them a try and see if they really are as good as CR made them out to be (btw, you can go to consumerreports.org and read the article..search for "golf balls"). Well, this past week I gave it a go. My home course was slow/open so I played two balls off the tee and started to keep track of the distance off the tee; although I'm no Iron Bryon, I figured doing so would eliminate at least some variables (wind, temp, roll, etc.) Also, I don't have a laser/range finder, so did my best walking off from sprinkler heads to determine the distance. Also, it's hard enough sometimes getting 1 ball in the fairway, let alone 2 in a row..well, on two holes, I had to hit a second ball of the same model to get two out there...and ended up with 5 holes that had the two different balls in the fairway (I eliminated ones in the rough as i figure the rough was too big a factor in roll distance). I also have a par 3 in the mix...surprisingly, i got both balls hit with the hyrbid onto the green (from the blue tees it's a 210 yd hole, so often use the hyrbid if the pin's in the back). So the results... HXT avg: 249.2, NikePDS avg: 244.3; if I discard the par3, HXT: 256.0, PDS: 249.8. So a 6+yd advantage to the HXT. Not a huge difference, but a difference. Oh, and of note, I actually hit the Nike 2yds longer on the Par3 so that skews the #'s; not once with the driver did the Nike ball go past the HXT. Another couple of observations (I played/completed the remainder of the hole strictly with the Nike ball). It doesn't seem to hold the greens as well as I'm used to with the HXT..not sure if a spin thing only or not, but it was noticable esp on the holes where I'm used to a 60-70 wedge into the green and seeing the ball stop after the 2nd or 3rd bounce...didn't see that with the Nike balls. Noticed same with my mid-irons...our first par 3 is a 6 or 7 iron, and for the most part if I land it on the green, it stays within a yard or so of the ballmark; not with the Nike ball. On putting, I was very surprised..this ball did feel soft hitting the face of my putter...softer than the Nike One balls, and I was as comfortable with them than I am with the HXT's or T56's; but it did seem that the ball rolled a bit farther than the HXT's, but that's subjective...not being iron bryon I can't validate it. All the above for what it's worth... it was sorta fun to play a round that way, even though it isn't that easy to put two balls off the tee into the fairway... and I might just use a regular rotation of Nike PDSoft balls in my bag, at 1/3 the price of the HXT's...
