  1. Look into an Adams or TaylorMade 3 wood. Their profile makes it easier to hit off the ground.
  2. Yeah, I would listen to Erik. I don't know the guy but he seems to know what he's talking about. He should run a website and give people advice on their golf game. Oh wait......
  3. Weather is the biggest factor for me. I love to walk but the Texas heat doesn't cooperate this time of year. The winter and spring is great to walk though. I focus better while walking but I also do better after a bad shot when I'm able to "walk it off." I brood for the first half of the walk but then I settle in and get back to business. One important issue that hasn't been mentioned is that good shoes make a big difference. If you're going to walk, put some extra $$ into some decent shoes. Your feet won't get tired nearly as fast.
  4. I look for "recycled" golf balls on the internet. The top quality ones look and feel the same as brand new ones from the store. At a buck a ball, it's hard to beat.
  5. Go play a Par 3 course. You might even break seventy.
  6. I use brand new shiny pennies. I'm too cheap to risk losing a quarter.
  7. Like everyone always ends up saying: Find what works and stick with it. Hybrids are so popular because the long irons don't work for so many people.
  8. You'll want standard bounce or high bounce if you have a higher handicap. The low bounce is for players that know how to tell the club what to do and it actually does it. You want the advantage of the club doing more of the work for you.
  9. Eldrick hasn't had to give up his Scotty but he's an exception to a lot of rules.
  10. I love my Cobra SS-I irons. Feel great and are forgiving when I need it. They have a thin profile and I like how they address the ball. I don't like the fat, wide soles on the newer Cobras, Callaways and various other makers.
  11. I'm a believer in the Bridgestone e6. Once your golf buddies get past the obvious jokes of "uh oh, did you have a blow out over there?" when you get stuck in the rough, they like them too after they try them out. $25/box for a 3 piece ball is hard to beat.
  12. The 905R is a great driver. I found a used one at Golfsmith for $120. It has a great sound and feel. I played a couple of rounds with it but missed the draw bias of my F Speed. I sold it to one of my golf buddies (10 hc) and the only way I'll get it back from him is to pry it from his cold, dead hand. With a 8 hc, you should be able to bomb it and work the ball pretty well.
  13. A 5 Wood and 2 Hybrid will give similar results. If you love your Heavenwood, look into/experiment with a 1 (14*), 2 (17*), or 3 (20*). They're just about the same lofts as the standard woods these guys are recommending.
  14. You also have to include experience in there. I'd say "half of putting is 90% mental" which would leave you 5% for experience. (Sorry for Yogi Berra/math nerd humor). There's a lot to be said for knowing how to read the breaks and "picturing" the putt (Tiger's strategy from what I've heard). I upgraded my putter but didn't see improvement until I started understanding the contours of the green.
  15. I saw a dramatic improvement from 30 yards in when I bought my lob wedge. As a high handicapper, my second shot does not always end up on the green on par 4s. I need something that can get me close for a high percentage putt to save par. The lob works for me (I've even gotten a birdie with it: A blind squirrel can eventually find a nut). I do have to practice with it a lot to figure out what I can do with it. When I was using a sand wedge for the same shots I would either be too timid and blade the ball or be too aggressive and let her rip over the green. I say get a cheap used titleist vokey or cleveland 588 to see how it works.
